Looking for a nice unit for both travel and to work and back.
Right now, I am torn between:
TomTom 740
Garmin (Can't think of model but its comparable)
Which way should I go and why?

It works really well for me lol.hammerbillsfan likes this. -
Interesting that Alen of all people would skip the "In-Depth" analysis. :pity:
:wink2:
Anything you especially like or dislike about it? -
The best idea I can give you is to PM Stitches or Desides. Those two know everything about these things. -
I read that Garmin works great right out of the box, but not much more you can do with it.
TomTom takes some getting used to and set-up time, but the "Tweeks" you can do are limitless. -
long time no see kenny.....
put a stick in the ground, and depending on the time....the sun making the shadow is "north"

TM stands for Traffic / Map updates, and yeah they are free this way.
Otherwise its like $9/Month.
I'll spend the extra $60 and get the TM model.
Thanks for the heads up. -

I don't think anything else comes with that monthly subscription? -
Get one that has the Lifetime subscription. From what I have seen the difference in price in minuscule.azfinfanmang likes this. -
I've got a Garmin Nuvi 245w, or 255w... its a couple years old now, but its outstanding. I absolutely love it, whether it is for short, or long trips.
That being said, if they are comparable in features and in what you want it to do for your use, I don't think you can go wrong with either one. As far as I know Garmin, and TomTom are the top 2 leading makers of GPS devices.hammerbillsfan likes this. -
Get an android device...comes free on a few of them spoken turn by turn, portable, no fees for updates. Also, gives traffic, movie listings, all kinds of convenient stuff. I'm a complete spaz with directions and it hasnt done me wrong yet...

I have a Garmin. If you live a city type area it'll take a minute or so to find the signal but other than that I really like it. My folks have a TomTom and they hate it apparently.

Good luck in your decision.
