He's been talked about for a while here. Let's play Madden....how about Smiley, White and a 6th rounder for Olsen ?? Maybe they can convert White into a WR or RB or something other than dead wood....

Olsen is a good receiving TE, but not a great blocking TE. Kind of the polar opposite of Fasano. Olsen's faster and can challenge the seams of the coverage, but would not be called upon to be the blocking TE for our offense, certainly not for Martz, as he just wants another OL instead of a TE...

Nalbone is the closest thing we have to Olsen, being a little faster and more athletic than Haynos or Fasano. Sperry I'm not too sure of yet. Haven't seen enough, but what I have has been pretty good. He's more balanced as a blocker and receiver than any of the other guys we have, but he's not great at either or at least what we've seen of him...

 

As for White...meh...the only reason he's here now is that he was a 2nd round pick by this regime. Hasn't shown anything yet. Hasn't even shown any potential yet, which is more alarming than not being able to show.

 

I don't know why an article where Olsen stating he had apprehensions but now is alright prompts more trade talk?

Smiley will find another team, problem being though, no other team wants to pick up the remainder of his contract. Which means, no trade. This is the main reason no other team has even sniffed Smiley this year. Regardless if his former agent let the cat out of the bag, regardless if it was known that he was not invited to off season lifting, regardless. The entire NFL knows about his injuries and the possibility of his shoulder not holding up, regardless of what his agent says, and there isn't a team in the NFL that will pay him the kind of money he was to make, including us.

He will find a new home but for far less then his current contract. If Smiley had a smaller, more affordable contract, we may have gotten a 6th or 7th for him, maybe.

 

Correct. I have been reading for weeks why don't we offer Smiley and two bushels of fish heads to the Bears for Olsen. Some just do not understand that Smiley and his contract, are not in big demand.

 

Because every team in the NFL should just shut the **** up and give us the players we want for the pittance we're willing to offer. Don't you know anything?

I would at least open talks with them and see what was possible! He would be an upgrade over our current situation and we would free up money via trading Smiley and some other prospect or depth position. Chicago has TONS of holes and we could do something im sure..

Miami; Hi, wanted to speak to you guys about trading Justin Smiley for anyone of low level on your team.
Chicago; LOUD CLICK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and then a dial tone.

 

IDK about all that. Olsen doesn't fit into the Offense they are running, plus they are hurting on the line..it would take more than Smiley but its do able.

 

Chicago is cooooooooooooooooooold cold cold, when you have injuries such as his. It put Orlando Pace out of commission, for good up there.

The cold intensifies joint injuries pretty fast. Do not know if you have ever been in Chicago where the Bears play but its right on the lake. Windy as hell too.

 

I know, I'm a state away. Orlando was also very old though and hanging on to his career. Smiley has some gas left. All I'm saying is its not unrealistic for us to get him. It may not be for Smiley but he can be had I'm sure.

 

I doubt the cold would have much to do with whether or not Smiley would be happy in Chitown. If he played a skilled position, that might be different, but in the trenches, he'll expend more energy to keep himself warm than WRs, RBs, or TEs...

That said, this is really a pipe dream. He has no trade value now that the cat is out of the bag. Between his chronic shoulder injury and his salary, not even Chicago would trade for him.

Olsen would be a nice pickup, but not one that will put us over the top in talent and certainly not worth us giving much up for in the way of draft picks. Besides, I'm not convinced that he's even on the market, despite the relative non-fit he is for Martz' offense.

 

Martz said that if anything Olsen will become a bigger factor in the Bears offense. I think that Fasano will have a rebound year and is a bit underrated right now. I also want to see what Kory Sperry can do as a pass catching TE.

 

I am going to start posting the same comment in all these type threads:
Good idea but we can't expect to have a Pro Bowl or franchise caliber player at every position.

 

Think the early 70's Fins, later 70's Steelers, 2000ish Bucs and Ravens...how many 'pro bowl' guys were on those teams ?? The answer to your question is yes...

 

Or how about those 80's and 90's teams of that college team in Miami.

 

That and the Bears as an Organization just don't giveaway players they invested quality resources into, they used a high draft pick on Olson and will want a return on their investment.
