So my parents asked me what I want for Christmas and I didn't really know what to ask for so I kind of evaded the question.

Today my parents call me and ask if I would want a gun (I'm assuming a hand gun) for Christmas. They believe that the gun control laws are going to make it harder and harder to get a gun (with more and more background checks, etc) in the future and think it might be smart for me to ask for one for Christmas.

Personally, as of right now I have no interest in getting a gun. I would want one in the future, especially if the Government starts regulating them as much as I think they soon will. I could think of better things I could use right now, such as maintenance on my vehicle, etc; but I wouldn't be opposed to getting a gun.

    Any advice?

Well, imo I'd take the gift and spend time learning how to use it...then lock it up and keep the key safe.

Firearms themselves are fine, it is irresponsible owners that are the problem

Yeah, I would definitely be responsible with it. I just feel like it is a catch-22 because I don't want a gun now, but I would want one in the future if the gun laws get tighter (which would make it harder to get) lol.

Also I was thinking I would ask for a rifle instead of just a hand gun. That way if I wanted to hunt in the future I could use that gun instead of having to buy another.

Handgun: comfort is key. how it fits in your hand and ease of use if the safety features.

Rifle: find out what's legal to hunt with then decide within those guidelines.

    Good luck!

Well, it's better to have it now rather than wishing one had it and it not being available later.

General rule, Shotguns are very utilitarian, you can literally do anything with a decent one.

    --hunt
    -shoot clays
    -target shoot
    -home defense

But pistols are more likely to be more $$$ as time rolls along.

What do you want it for? Defense, hunting, target shooting... all depends. I have rifes, shotguns, and a few hand guns... actually getting ready to buy a AR15 this spring before someone gets the bright idea to ban them.

For the reason you are contemplating the gun, I'd get a handgun. They are and will be much harder to acquire than long guns.

I don't know, if you don't want a gun why have one? I understand why some people like guns and own them. Responsible gun owners should be allowed to have them if it brings them joy. Personally though, if you don't have a use or want for it, I don't think there's any point in having it. Of all the things that can happen with a gun, besides target practice and home defense, almost everything else is bad. Unless you count doing your best TAXI impression in the mirror a good thing.

For home defense, a cheap shotgun is all you need. A handgun in a home defense situation is more likely to get you killed than an intruder if you don't know how to use it.

Go the POFO. You should get some great opinions there.

As a Canadian with a gun, I've been required to take courses and get a license. I am not sure about US laws, but like Padre said, take a course to learn proper gun safety and handling.

Although you may not want one, I am sure you will enjoy it as a hobby if you can find a local range. It can be pricey with membership fees and ammo, but shooting a gun is very fun and you will definitely enjoy it. So, with the gift you not only get personal protection, but maybe a new hobby that you will thoroughly enjoy.

If going for a gun, you can't go wrong with a Glock. Price competitive and extremely reliable.
