Anyone else find that first ep lacking? The dynamic of having Will locked in a cage is counter-productive and makes me squirm instead of sit at the edge of my seat.

    About to watch E02.

Agreed. I'm not a fan of Will's new role as prison inmate. I suppose they're doing it because we all know who will be doing the same, in the future. I do like Hannibal out and about and acting as Will Graham. Episode 2 was better than 1. And episode 3 looks better than both, so at least is moving forward. One thing that bothers me, Hannibal is going to attempt to kill Jack Crawford in 14 months... How many seasons is that? This show is basically uncancelable, so I'm curious if we'll get to see it by seasons end, or if TPTB are toying with us.

I liked the second ep too. Creepiest scenes/villain yet; I just wonder why they didn't get more out of that? The scope seemed grand enough for a several-episode arc.

Agreed. The human muriel killer would of been fascinating to explore over 8-10 episodes. As much as I love the mythology of Hannibal (and a reinvented Will Graham), the backdrop is too procedural. Having one big case, with lots of psychology and mythology would be very fascinating. Every week we would get more puzzle pieces and finally, a crescendo. It's a shame this show is on network TV, which means it has to be dumbed down and given ADD-esque treatment. Imagine the scope of this show on HBO...

Hannibal is getting busy and hopefully he stays that way. The judge kill and subsequent statement was awesome. I really love this incarnation of Hannibal. It took getting used to at first because of Anthony Hopkins infamous portrayal, but I find Mikkelsen to be far more convincing as an intellectual serial killer. In fact, I think he's more creepy too. While Hopkins went for over the top, Mikkelsen's creepiness is so subtle and unnerving. It's like watching a robot mimicking humans. Like HAL from space odyssey or David from prometheus. While Hopkins had far more charisma, I think Mikkelsen's Hannibal is more realistic in terms of a serial killer hiding in plain sight. He always had a guilty look in his eyes. The only thing I don't think Mikkelsen does better, is his portrayal of enjoyment for culture and the arts. Hopkins' portrayal seemed more passionate and invested. Either way, Mikkelsen is killing this role.

That last ep was as gruesome as it gets. The scene in which Will cuts off the guard's ear was very explicit. Even in Reservoir Dogs, the ear-cutting scene was a cutaway (heh).

This show would be exponentially better on HBO, though. Some real nudity wouldn't hurt, and it would enhance the reality of the bodies found.

Gina Torres was nothing short of magnificent in E4. A ridiculously good performance in a very good episode.

I have to say this is one of my favorite shows on TV. The portrayal of Hannibal on this show is actually better than in any of the movies. People will say thats blasphemy but its the truth. The accent, the lack of emotion, the subtle inside jokes that he makes in almost every conversation, its exactly what Hannibal would be like. I like the fight scenes too, they are few and far between, but they are brutal and real, no posing or taunting or showing off just people trying to kill each other with anything they can get their hands on, very real. I hope this show sticks around for a bit, it has a ton of potential. Great cast too. I agree with the notion that its a shame this isn't on a cable network but really it is kind of refreshing to see a major non cable network actually trying to put "rated r" material on late at night. Kind of unrealistic that no one would ever mutter an fbomb lol but it is what it is.

Wow. Episode 6 was incredible. I'm curious, if Dr. Chilton is going to be a suspect going forward. With Will Graham all but proven innocent, he'll be out and about. Obviously, he won't stop believing Hannibal is the Ripper, but has no evidence for it whatsoever. And Jack, who has tried to accuse Hannibal and catch him in the act has found nothing... With Gideon giving up Chilton, and accusing him of influencing the case, Gideon's "falling" injuries, and the false test results of the food at Hannibal's dinner party, along with his alibi, I have to suspect Chilton is going to be under the microscope on some level... I hope so. I want to see him squirm a bit. Making Gideon eat himself was kind of awesome...

Has anyone ever seen that movie "we are what we are"? It's about a family of cannibals and one of them has a disease that comes from eating humans... I wonder how Hannibal has avoided that.

Given the low ratings, I could see NBC canceling the show... Although, I heard it does very well overseas where Hannibal is still very popular. This is such a good show. And really, given NBC's run of misses, I really hope they decide to keep it around. NBC hasn't had a show this critically acclaimed since... Friends? Maybe Heroes, season 1. And Fuller has 7 seasons mapped out. Even if they never make it that far, the fact that he has planned ahead is a good sign and could influence NBC's decision if they like the direction. I really would love nothing more than to explore the role reversal of Graham and Hannibal (Red Dragon) and eventually, silence of the lambs. Fuller's version of Hannibal is so much better than any other iteration, it would be disappointing not to see it happen.

I could see another network picking this show up. Now that options like Netflix and Amazon are on the table I would think this show has a shot at staying around. I'm kind of surprised that it doesn't have a bigger following, the books are really popular and this incarnation of the book is by far the best. I think we are seeing (and we know from the 1st episodes 1st 5 minutes) that Jack knows or at least suspects Will is right. Did you see the ending of episode 6? Just don't want to spoil that.

Hannibal seemed surprised that Will just came right for him, out in the open like that. That Will is willing to match wits with him, someone who has "accomplished" as much as Hannibal has.

I think he's afraid; he has always had the advantage over Will, first due to his subterfuge as Will's friend/confidant/therapist, then by virtue of Will being so sick that Hannibal could control him as he did.

Now it's a level playing field.

Remember that this, at least these first two seasons, is based on the book "Red Dragon," in which Will Graham eventually does get the better of Hannibal. Although it damages him to the point at which he has to retire, Will captures Lecter, and that's how we find him years later in the institution, in "Silence," where he meets Clarice Starling.

Did anyone else read "Hannibal," the third book in the trilogy? It ends considerably differently than the movie.

Reading the books is next on the list. Dont spoil em! ;) I do like the way things have turned with Will and it does seem to unsettled Hannibal, he seemed unnerved when Will pointed the gun at him and when he showed up for "therapy". He seemed almost scared when he asked him if he was going to try and kill him again. The acting and writing in the series is great. It would be a shame if this season is the last, I haven't heard if there is another on the way or not.
If anyone has Amazon Prime the 1st Season is available for free right now, I watched it again this week, its just as good or better on the 2nd viewing. There are a lot of foreshadowing comments and inside jokes by Hannibal that I missed the first time around.

I won't spoil the books, but the most recent has now been out for 15 years. So—hurry!

EDIT: holy ****, just looked it up and 'Red Dragon' was published in 1981! 'Silence' in 1988, 'Hannibal' in 1999.

I highly recommend the books. Much richer, although this current series is amazing in its own right.

The show does push the limits of network TV, thats for sure. Its by far the the most violent and gory network TV show I've ever seen. The show is amazing, its kind of silly to say it but network TV is actually keeping people away I think, if this show was on HBO it would be talked about non stop.

True. I think HBO would handle everything better regarding the show. That said, I like that NBC is pushing buttons. These network shows are epic failures compared to the quality of subscriber based TV. While Hannibal itself likely suffers from being on network TV to various degrees, it has the opportunity to be somewhat revolutionary in two ways. Pushing buttons and scaling back major programming from 20+ episodes to 12 episodes with tighter scripts and storytelling. In addition, better quality actors might want to be on TV rather than chasing film work only, knowing the shooting schedule isn't going to take up their entire year.

Any word on whether this show is getting renewed?

    Another great episode...

Most serial killers are average to below average intelligence. Instead of unrealistically portraying all serial killers as highly intelligent, I like the fact that Hannibal seems to recognize that deficiency in others and has become a serial killer life coach.

Read some news about the 3rd season.

    http://www.fashionnstyle.com/articles/18951/20140426/hannibal-renewed-third-season.htm

And a small spoiler about a new character, which you likely can guess all on your own if you've been watching...
Michael Pitt has been casted to play Mason Vergal. His sister Margot, just appeared on the show in the last two episodes. These two have an incredibly creepy relationship... Anyway, word is, Mason's character description is supposedly a lot of Andrew Scott's, Moriarty, in the BBC Sherlock series. I'm a huge fan of Scott/Moriarty, so this terrific news for me. Given how twisted Mason is, I really hope they expand his story from the books and he has a battle of wits with Lector. Then again, judging by the opening scene in season 2, I would have to think that Jack Crawford is going to catch Hannibal at the end of season 2. Then again, maybe Fuller only did that to draw fans in, and that sequence takes place at the end of another season... I hope Mason gets more than a few episodes at the back end of season 2, because his character could be a great antagonist and bring more of a mythology crime(s) for Will to hunt.

I do like how the potential for Hannibal's creation of other serial killers using his "therapy", its an interesting plot for the show to explore. Will seems to be walking a thin line between trying to catch Hannibal and being under his spell again. The Will character is very interesting. I liked the dinner with Jack and Hannibal, the dialogue on the show is very well written. It would be a travesty if this show doesn't go on for 4 or 5 seasons.

This last episode was as compelling an hour of television as I've ever seen.

From a languid pace for forty minutes to abject terror in 3 seconds flat is a trick most could not pull off effectively; believably.

Margot Verger is going to be a formidable ingredient in this heady mix.

    What a well-crafted series.

And NBC has such a good thing going with 'Grimm'...it returns in the Fall as a lead-in for 'Constantine,' then after hiatus it leads for S3 of 'Hannibal'.

Something I find interesting is that the TV series seems to be much bloodier and the bloody scenes more extravagant than even the film 'Hannibal'.

Note the scene in the show in which Mason Verger cuts up his face; in the film, it's all done in a stylized frenzy, with only one real "torture porn" money shot of Verger's damage to himself. Yet in the show, although it's done mostly in shadow, it is extended and far more gruesome.

I'd venture a guess that if the film had been as explicit, it might have risked an NC-17 rating.

It's pretty insane what they can get away with on network television nowadays...

    Exactly.

I'm not on the side of toning down the gore nor the violence; if either offends you you shouldn't watch it, end of story. But it's interesting to note the hypocrisy of the elevated level of gore that is acceptable, yet how since 'NYPD Blue' you don't even see a buttcheek on network TV anymore.

As an assman, I am chagrined.

Damn thats good news. After every episode I wind up thinking how crazy it would be to end the show after this season. This season is one of the best of any show that I've ever watched. Its weird that it actually hurts the show to be on network TV. Shows you how things are right now.

Im pretty stoic when it comes to film violence and I was cringing visibly with that scene. One of the worst/best I've seen. It fit the show/characters so I dont think it was just being "torture porn" for the sake of it but damn that was grizzly and awful to watch.
