i just can't be happy with morale victories anymore. i agree with a lot of what you are saying, but seeing this movie over and over again....maybe i will feel better tomorrow when i sleep on it.

It definitely feels disingenuous to come away from that game feeling good about Miami's offense. It was not pretty. It took way too long for Gase and Tannehill to figure out how to move the ball. Either Miami simply isn't good enough to go against a real pass defense or they weren't able to make the adjustments necessary to get their receivers into the game earlier. Either option is bad.

The upside is obviously the defense. The line did a great job containing Wilson. Generally-speaking, they took good angles when he tried to escape. The back end of the defense isn't stellar. I still feel like when Seattle knew they needed something they could get it. Good teams don't worry about winning the 4th quarter and that's exactly what Seattle was able to do and that was without Rawls and Graham being at 100%.


In the end I'll say the same thing I said in the game thread...you'll wake up tomorrow knowing you lost to the best team in the NFC West...no problem. Nobody picked Miami to win today and they didn't. If anything, you come away slightly more confident about the defense and slightly more concerned about the offense. I'll take this loss though over the one the Bills had to the Ravens or the one the Jets had to the Bengals. Both of those were against AFC opponents. The Jets lost to a good team at home while the Bills looked pretty lousy. Tyrod looked particularly bad and the Ravens defense who he was facing is nothing special.

 

It's a good thing this team has fans that are happy with mediocrity or they would have no fans at all.

 

Yeah, I'm not trying to bash the optimism, haha. The defense was solid. I predicted 7-9 for the record so I'm with you on what you just said above.

The offense looked a little too Lazor-esque for my taste though. We've gotta be better than that​, right!?

 

Abdul-Quadus (sp?) stood out to me as looking really good.

Wouldn't exactly say I'm happy with that team performance though.
The game was there for the winning and we blew it. Drops, special teams, questionable use of timeouts. Tough to overlook that and find happiness 5 minutes after a tough loss.

 

Hard to take anything positive from the Offense today. It was a complete **** show from the get go. Minus 3 yards on the first "pass" and a 0 yard play on 3rd n 5 "pass" that set the tone for the garbage that was to come. Started something like 1-12 on 3rd downs. 5 three and outs first 8 possessions. D on the field all day long. Thats the positive, the D was outstanding all game except for the 3rd and 12 conversion early on that led to 3 points and ofcourse the end of the game that i knew was coming. Its hard to be positive when you have an offense that will struggle to score 17 pts most games. We blew chance after chance today. Had 2 turnovers on D in their territory and still managed 10 pts. Pretty pathetic anyway u cut it. A ton of 0 to 3 yard plays.

 

The way that game played out just an avg offensive team wins that game by double digits. We are a couple key injuries on D away from a top 10 pick with this offense. You cant win in this league with a passing offense that gets so little yardage per attempt. Regardless of who you blame, the passing offense was abysmal. We should be 1-0 with a 1 game lead over the entire division if the Pats lose tonight. How can anybody be happy with the garbage they displayed today?

 

Well, you can take that perspective but it seemed that between that 2nd quarter and that last drive where Tannehill got the TD that our offense did absolutely nothing and could not get so much as a first down.

If you look at Tannehill's 186 yards passing and start looking at what those are. 50 were on the big screen to Foster and half the rest were on that final drive. You had at least 2 quarters there were the offense couldn't pass the ball at all.

That's scary bad. That's the kind of ineptitude we saw under Lazor, so yeeeeeeeah, I kind of feel like we should've expected more. Where was Cameron? Where was Carroo? Where was Landry aside from the WR screens?

It just wasn't a very good-looking showing offensively. We got beat. That's all there was to it. I'm really surprised our D kept us in it for as long as they did. I expected a lot more out of Wilson to be honest. He had decent protection, playing at home and had Lockett and Baldwin there all game. Luke Wilson is no scrub either...at least considering his counterpart in this game, lol.

 

This. Williams almost scored on a long screen as well on that td drive. Foster and Williams accounted for over 75 yards on 0 yard passes. We literally got 0 yards passing for the equivalent of half the game. Be interested to know how many of thills yards came through the air. 50? Lol...aside from the Stills drop everything was the usual across the line of scrimmage garbage. They were sitting in zone all day and we are throwing 2 yard passes. Brilliant.

 

1- They were all over Landry, because of a lack of other weapons to worry about.
2- During that long 2 quarter stretch of dormant offense Foster was running straight into a wall for absolutely nothing which put the offense behind the 8 ball.

 

I'm not happy at all I'm pissed. We should have won that game. I'm not exactly surprised though. Same old Lolphins. I think the Seachickens are overrated as hell though. Our defense was surprisingly solid considering all the perceived holes we have. The offense doesn't have much fire power at all. But we certainly had our opportunities to put enough points on the board to win. Disappointing.. Depressing.. looking forward to doing it all over again next week.

He was out. Still produced as much as the other wideouts who did play tho lol. Think Stills managed 1 catch. Carroo 1 catch. Cameron 1 catch maybe. Landry had 1 catch away from the los i believe. Pathetic all around from thill and the receivers.

 

This year is about evaluating the QB to see what we need to do moving forward..

Not impressed with week one..shows an inability to look off covered receivers....throw it anyways...(bad sign)... Does not attack the los when pressured, meakley goes backwards...have to move forward and attack the outlets.

Didn't not run once on his own accord..

Nothing in terms of an intermediate passing game...less than 5 ypa.

 

Every week is different. Every team you match up against is a different beast. While it can be encouraging to see positives (big drive at the end, looks like we have good safeties, we were okay against the run, etc.), you only have 16 games. And losses are killers.

There are no moral victories in the NFL.

 

I just didn't see it that way at all. Our offense marched down the field and close to the red-zone five different times, yet we only came away with 10 points. One was on Franks. One was on Stills. Then the beautiful deep pass to Stills that was dropped. But that's not the point- Seattle had the #1 run D last year and the #2 pass D.....plus the #1 offense. We easily outplayed them on both sides of the ball and should have won by 20....in a stadium where other teams just don't win.

Given it was week one in a hostile environment, I think the team played exceptional minus a few mental lapses.

 

I didnt expect more out of this team because ive seen this garbage offense led by thill for over 4 yrs now. Doesnt mean im happy with watching another season with one of the worse offenses in football. Doesnt mean im ok with watching an offense that might as well punt on 3rd and 6+. The reason i had for hoping the offense would be competent this season was Gase. Turns out i can expect more of the same until Tannehill is no longer the QB. Thill has physical talent but a ***** attitude. Never throws guys open, never takes a chance to try to make something happen on 3rd down. Just takes his 2 yard conpletion and punts. We are going to need the #1 D in the league if we ever want to make the playoffs with thill.

Marched down the field...lmao. The D handed them the ball twice in Sea territory. End result? 3 pts. They put together and finished 1 drive all game. One! The pass game couldnt have been anymore pathetic. Had we won that game 10-6 it wouldve been a miracle due to a fantastic defensive effort and a seattle offense that couldnt do much. You get 16 games and you let the first one slip through your fingers cause of a pathetic performance by your offense. Get used to it. This offense still blows.

 

Our defense played a heck of a ballgame and we were able to stop the run and pressure Wilson. It amazes me how anybody can watch that game and think that Tannehill is what cost us the game, but I expect no less from some of our ignorant fans. Stills dropped one of the easiest TD passes you will ever see and we missed two opportunities to get points via FG. Ryan made some good plays, especially down the stretch in clutch situations. I honestly thought we would get run out of the building but I feel so much better about going into Foxboro next week, especially if our defense plays at that level. Even though we didn't win, this looked like a team that had confidence, a team that was well coached, and a team that was physical. These were all non-existent under Philbin. We held an explosive offense to 12 points and dang near beat them in one of the most difficult venues to play in in all of sports.

 

The D was gassed because they were on the field almost the entire game. Look at time of possession. You can't play like **** all game and expect your defense to win the game with an offense that putrid. Hold Seattle to 12 points, stop Wilson from doing his thing, and on their home field that should be a win every time. Only Miami's offense can lose that game. How you can come away from this game feeling good about the offense and blaming the defense is mind boggling.

 

If Stills catches that ball we probably win but the offense as a whole was terrible. Single handidly lost us this game. Seeing as how Thill is the QB of this pathetic O that single handidly lost the game is say he holds plenty of blame. You could count the number of completions that traveled farther than 10 yards in the air on 1 hand and you would have enough fingers left over to flip off Stills and give a thumbs up to Foster.

Pretty sure im aware the offense was garbage. The defense still had to hold and didnt. Presumably due to top. In response to dj I was saying if our WRs and TEs learned to catch passes in their hands we probably arent having this conversation.

 

My financial boycott of the dolphins continues. They won't get a penny from me until they make the playoff. I'm not happy with exciting losses.

I agree. I'm not expecting to win the Super Bowl this year, but I want to see some progress to keep building for the future. I feel pretty confident that we would have lost by at least twenty points if Philbin and crew were still in charge. I'm pleased with how the defense played and at the overall physicality of the team. They looked hungry and well disciplined with the exception of that dumb roughing the passer penalty committed by a veteran Wake. I know everybody wants to win now and it is hard to wait, but I like what I saw from Gase and his staff.

Regardless of how we lost, I think most of us can agree that we expected it. Hate to lose this way, but let's see how the team responds to this. Kind of intrigued by that, to be honest.

The mistakes were apparent. Can this staff pull this team back together?

I was very impressed with how Joseph's side did. Now I can see why Gase wanted him and only him as a DC. It's still early, but the D-line was composed and dominated for the most part. They held contain on Wilson pretty much the entire game. They didn't break off any long runs.

On offense, can they get a running game in order? Without that, I'm not too confident in Tannehill carrying this team alone. We'll see. I'm just not too confident that he can, with any frequency, make some of these comebacks. Again, we shall see, and learning a new offense against a stout Seattle D was a helluva task.

It's the first game, and there are some really good things to take away from this one. Shore up some of these mental mistakes and this team could be a treat to watch.

 

Everyone's healthy. So that's a net positive.

It does kind of make you wonder how we were sitting here 3 years ago saying "Tannehill is solid but he needs a defense and a running game."

Back then, statements like that didn't feel like a criticism of him as much as a plan on how to build around the guy and win games. Heck, we said the same things back then that we do today. Nothing's changed. Andy Dalton can't carry his team. Joe Flacco can't carry his team. Neither can Matt Ryan or Blake Bortles or Derek Carr (I don't think).

Point is, you'd think that in 2-3 years the team would've done the obvious. You'd have hoped that they'd have established a more physical offense that runs the ball, utilizes play-action and looks more consistent week-in, week-out. In short, you'd think they would've set a plan to develop the kind of offense that would be relatively consistent and that would give the defense a chance to win games. That's generally what Seattle, Denver and Carolina do. Heck, pretty much any successful team will demonstrate quality defense with a balanced offense. Few passers get away with throwing over 60% of the time. And maybe they throw because they're behind, but again, I'd say that's probably because they don't score, lol.

I admire so many teams right now and yet Miami seems so far from them. It's hard to be optimistic about Miami knowing the pressure that's on the passing game.

Fast forward to now and we've got a perpetually-lackluster offensive line built almost exclusively with Tackles and so many resources tied up in WRs. It's as if they cannot accept that Tannehill has limitations as a passer. We don't have an O-line that can run-block very well, we haven't put resources into the RB position and our primary TE (the only one that seems to see the field) can't block at all.

I mean, if at least you had elite pocket protection it'd make sense but that seems like a fantasy. And if we had a stud WR I'd get it. Andy Dalton has AJ Green. Derek Carr has Amari Cooper. Matt Ryan has Julio Jones. Matt Stafford had Calvin Johnson. Jameis Winston now has Mike Evans. Blake Bortles now has Allen Robinson.

It's as if Joe Philbin left the building but our Green Bay fantasies remained. After watching the offense today I feel like I bit hard on this fantasy of Adam Gase. I sure hope this one game (which looked awful) wasn't a picture of what this season is going to be.

I'm not hard on Tannehill. I've defended the guy a lot, probably too much. But man, I've been waiting for this team to build a running game around him forever. If it doesn't happen this year, the team is going to lose a lot and it's going to be in a really awkward spot going into next season.

At that point, it might be time to press the reset button. Maybe you trade away Albert. Maybe you find a way to move on from Pouncey and his cost. Maybe you get serious about finding a feature-RB and some Guards who can actually provide a running game.

Everyone talks like this is Tannehill's make or break year. I mean, I'll tell you what, Tannehill is the same guy today I saw back in his first couple years. I don't know what to say. I don't know what to tell you guys. He's not an elite QB and won't ever be. He needs help and so far, I have little reason to believe he's got the O-line, the RBs, or the offensive scheme to win.

I'm not slamming Tannehill. I'm asking why this team hasn't built an offense around this guy with the kind of pieces it's going to take to win? We're all wondering that. We does it feel like Tannehill--a guy we've all known has significant limitations--is our only hope this season?

I'm scared for what might be in store this season because yes, while there is hope that Adam Gase helps this franchise turn the corner and yes, Vance Joseph might be one of the better young coordinators and yes, our roster might be solid enough to be competitive, it still feels like this team could suck enough to lose a lot. And if you lose a lot, let's say you get 4-6 wins and wind up drafting top-10...where exactly do you go? Do you chase a RB? Do you try and add to the defensive backfield or to the group of pass rushers you've got? Do you say f-it and go QB?

At least Henne threw 1-2 picks a game that made it obvious. Sheesh. The Philbin era sucked for the most part. The team got worse on both sides of the ball. Now we have a couple major contracts combined with significant holes in other areas.

I REALLY HOPE the rest of the season doesn't look at bad (offensively) as it did today.
