I am one of the leaders of "the sky is falling" when it comes to our WR talent. But my perception of that started to change this week. Just curious if anyone else feels the same way?
Brian Hartline had an awesome game! He was tied for 8th in recieving from what i just saw scrolling on the NFL Network screen. Maybe if he was healthy this off season I wouldn't have been as negative about our WR situation as I have been.
We can always count on Bess to be consistently good!
I love how our backs are used in the passing game!
There's no doubt that we need upgrades. Naanee is the leading canidate to be replaced. I would be extremely happy about our WR corp if we get rid of him and pick up someone like Jabar or someone like that for this year. I would be extremely happy if we can get a Dwane Bowe or Mike Wallace without having to use a first round pick in next years draft for a talent that either one of those would bring to the table next year. That would allow us to use our first on a safety or a pass rusher.
Any thoughts?

Not really, Bline had a decent game, but has a Wr scored a Td yet?
This corps is more like a tool box with guys who can play roles, but not guys who can do everything.Bpk likes this. -
I forgot to mention Anthony Armstrong. If he can stay healthy and contribute and Hartline and Bess remain consistent, maybe I will be fine with this group until we upgrade the talent next year.

We really need Armstrong to come back strong and be that guy he was when he put up 800 yards plus. That way we can bounce Bess back to what he does best. It would at least be serviceable for the rest of the season.
By the way you know your defense sucks when your fielding questions from the media asking why Miami's WR's roasted you lol. -
-
I do think our Wr corps is not as terrible as some would think, but I also think we need everyone healthy for it to be what people would like to see from it. -
-
I have a feeling Armstrong won't be 2011 Armstrong due to nagging health stuff.
-
Both of those are positives. -
It would be ridiculous to think otherwise now. It's happening. -
I gained some respect for Hartline today, always believed in Bess, but IMO our WR's stops there. Don't want any 1 year patches, nor do I want to give up a single draft pick to bring in a WR. I want to see what we have in the WR stable, give others more playing time, and know exactly what we have/need going in to the draft in April.
-
Not for me. Bess is still a solid receiver and Hartline is as well, but neither are dominant threats that can take the ball to the house. Outside of those 2 it is extremely bleak. They would be great compliments for a top receiver, kinda what we envisioned by getting Marshall....
-
Well, to me I see good short to intermediate Wr's in Bline and Bess, but think we need AA to bust deep coverages to round out our main Wr's, use Nanee as the #4 and MMoore as the #5 and it is functional..if everyone is healthy.
-
I am just glad Hartline is a big contributer. This whole off season, pre-season and even last week, I thought all the weight of this entire season was on Bess' shoulders. I just need a 3rd person to help carry that weight til we draft next April.

jboogie The sky is NOT falling!
I still think one big name WR would open things up for everyone.
Cromartie vs. Hartline scares me. Oh, I forgot he's gonna be covering Naanne  -
How many deep routes does the offense really have though? There was a play where Bess looked like he was going to bust one deep and it was purely off of deception and route running. Hartline and Bess are both good fits for what the team likes to do. Health willing, they may be your two starters for a long time unless the opportunity comes along to get better guys.

The two of them are probably two of the best route runners in the league and that's without any exaggeration.
-
- A lot of rollouts, meaning Henne- I mean Tannehill is forced to grow only to half the field. Usually the options are one crossing route underneath, a comeback a bit deeper (or sideline/option route)
- teams will begin to squat on this
- to be effective we must take the DEEP throw when CBs begin to jump the comebacks
Otherwise this WR revival will be short lived and end in INTs.Section126 likes this. -
They still suck.

Hartline was a real nice addition to the lineup this week. But next week will be a different story.
He and Bess won't be lining up against backups giving them a soft 7-10 yard cushion. It'll be Revis and Cromartie pressing them at the line of scrimmage.
They'll get locked down while the Jets sellout against the run. They'll say, "Rookie Tannehill, find a way to deal with these blitzes and dump the ball off to whomever you like underneath."Paul 13 likes this. -
Same perception for me. Hartline did have a nice game, but man that was just woeful defense by Oakland.
-
Will Revis be back next week? How bad was his concussion? As far as Hartline, I have never understood the apathy most have had for him. He has always been a pretty reliable if unspectacular reciever for us. When given opportunities he has always produced. He isn't a deep threat but he is no slug either, he has really good hands and runs good routes. He'll never be a number one but I have always been happy to have him on the team.
Congrats to him for his first 100 yard game! -
It would take Matthews stepping up and producing like he did in preseason and Armstrong being the deep threat he was suppose to be to change my mind on these wideouts.
-
I think what we have right now can be the absolutely bare minimum of what T-hill needs to be successful this year. They might be tools you buy at Wal-Mart rather than Lowes, but they are the halfway decent ones you can buy at Wal-Mart, so they'll do for the short-term. Hartline is doing what I think a lot of people thought he might as the defacto "#1." Bess will always be what he is, and that's fine. Beyond that, if Armstrong or Matthews can become something for us, then that's a plus. One probably will. And the alternate receivers like our TEs and RBs can make it work. So, it's enough for T-hill to show off his goods this year w/out people making excuses that he doesn't have this or that, and that's the reason for any struggles.
All that said, now that KC seems to be on the way to drafting Matt Barkley, I wonder if we can't snag Bowe from them for one of our #2s. I am more than fine w/ that, as we'll be getting a solid WR who is a true threat, who you know will be a certain level of good. And he's experienced and ready to go for many years to come still. Who else might we get with our #2 next year that would be what Bowe could be for us next season (let alone this year)? It's supposedly a weak WR class too (though, really, who can tell right now). If I'm Ireland, I try to make this happen. KC might very soon be in complete rebuild mode, so Bowe might be available! If you could put Bowe, Hartline and Bess out there, that's not bad! Then, anything Nanee/Armstrong/Matthews can give you at that point is pure gravy.
Wallace would be nice too, but Pittsburgh is not exactly in KC's situation. -
Hartline's production this week does not surprise me, facing a Raiders defense that already had a questionable secondary and then lost their best corner. And keep in mind part of the reason his production doesn't surprise me is I've been a bigger fan of him than I think most have been. It was me who kept insisting all along while he was hurt that it would be flat out stupid to cut him (remember when that was a valid suggestion?) or even bench him just because he had a training camp injury. It was me making videos of him which show his ability on the perimeter of the defense.
You've just got to use him right. Play-action deep post down the middle of the field against a legit corner (Jonathan Joseph) = not his thing. Even if the safeties bite as hard as you hope he's just not going to do anything there. Keep him on the perimeter and have him run your classic out/comeback/backshoulder/slant stuff. That's his thing. Every now and again it wouldn't hurt to pull him into the slot either, especially in the red zone, because as a rookie he showed promise there and I've considered his perimeter-only status these years to be more necessity- than talent-based.Tin Indian and ssmiami like this. -

Hartline and Bess are passable tandem.
Didn't see any decent plays from the other WR on the team.
If this team can't run the ball they're ****ed though. Going back to late last season Reggie Bush has made Matt Moore and Ryan Tannehill look a lot better.
That being said, the protection Tannehill got much of the game against Raiders was very poor. If he wasn't a supreme athletes, things would have been a lot worse. -

The NFC West isn't as horrible a division as it used to be. Rams, Cards and Seacocks all are promising teams.
Doesn't the Cards going into Foxborough and punching Brady and Co in the mouth concern everyone here especially since the Phins have to go to Glendale?
Going back to last season the Cards have amongst the best record in the league.
I do find it hard to take Kevin Kolb serious though. -
It would be nice to have a Wideout like Brandon Marshall on this team but seeing his disappearing act on Monday proves that he wouldn't be a good influence on Ryan Tannehill.
B-Marsh and Jay Cutler deserve each other, both are Emo Prima DonnasDolfanTom likes this. -
It's a long season. There are storylines I look forward to, and storylines I don't look forward to. The Dolphins have a legit chance to start out the year maybe even 3-1, but I think the story is going to collapse a little after that.
Then again, from the standpoint of the offense (which is where our glaring weaknesses still lay), this next stretch of two games could be very rough indeed. So things could still break in either direction.ssmiami likes this. -

The thing that gives me pause about the Cardinals is the fact that dating back to last year they've won 10 of their last 13 games. We keep obsessing about their passing game and quarterback but that defense is consistently keeping opponents scoring 20 points or less (9 out of 13 games).
And the Seahawks, I expected a turnaround. The win against Dallas isn't surprising. The Seahawks are built to be a solid team. The loss to the Cardinals shocked the hell out of me but with the Patriots going on to lose at home to the same team, suddenly there's a little perspective on that.
And I don't care what the Rams record says, win a game here, lose there...if you've WATCHED them, they're a different team. Fisher has turned them around.
I'm a little surprised San Francisco has managed to keep their foot on the gas coming away with victories over the Packers and Lions, both tough teams. I thought they would come back to earth a little, opening the door for the Seahawks to take the division title. -
