Universal Pictures revealed a new TV spot for Hellboy II: The Golden Army during the "American Idol" finale last night and you can now watch it online using the player below or in High Definition QuickTime here (1080p) and here (720p)! The Guillermo del Toro sequel hits theaters on July 11.

According to Guillermo Del Toro, that was the very first Hellboy II: The Golden Army script note - scribbled on the cover - he received from creator Mike Mignola. As it turns out, the latter was surprised by certain deviations Del Toro took from their initial discussion about the story for the sequel. Needless to say, more inspired talks about the script followed.

Animated, sometimes foul-mouthed, anecdotes like this highlighted Universal's Hellboy II Fanboy Screening held last night in Hollywood. Audience members - consisting of crew, journalists and winners of various Hellboy competitions - were offered a pair of "shaved horns" to strap on their own heads and were then introduced to Del Toro who told them playfully, if they are expecting a film close to the comic book, skip the movie, there's popcorn waiting for them out in the lobby. He showed no signs of lethargy after spending the last week attending the Saturn Awards, the Los Angeles Film Festival premiere and the back-to-back press days in Beverly Hills.

Dressed in his customary black pants, shirt and jacket, the director noted that his pattern of making "one film for them [i.e. the studio] and one film for me" seems to no longer apply anymore as Hellboy II is an ideal representation of a picture that is for "them" and "him." Minutes later, the audience got to witness this. While a proper review is coming, I will say, Hellboy II is another win for Del Toro. A mesmerizing, entertaining piece of work that had me grinning ear-to-ear. And this was my second time seeing it.

I hear it's AMAZING! Right up there with Dark Knight, supposedly.

With Guillermo Del Toro at the helm I expect II to be alot more imaginative.

You do know Del Toro directed the first one as well, right? Or are you referring to the screenplay?

Certainly not in the same league of the hype of the 2nd, but I really liked it. Usually don't turn the channel when it's on.

I liked the first one a lot. The comic book is great, Mike Mignola is one of my all time favorite artists. The previews that I've seen in the movies theatre look awesome.

I got a chance to see it last night. I only get to the movies once or twice a year, so I have to be a little picky.
I loved it. If you enjoyed the first one at all, see II.

Yeah, the first one was much better then I thought it would be, like Constantine or League of Extrodinary Gentleman, they were better films then I thought they would be, so I'll probably go watch HB II.

Maybe back to back it with the XFiles II as well.

I never saw the first one but did see II last night. It was alright. The ending was kinda crappy to me. There was also never really a threat of danger throughout the movie, even from the main bad guy.

Agreed, and good point. I thought the movie was just alright. I cant really get into any of the characters that much, and I felt like I knew where the story was going early on. Was a pretty average movie imo.

Saw this last night. I'd just seen Dark Knight on Sunday, so it was interesting to see such a completely different take on a comic book character. Whereas Dark Knight is grounded (mostly) in reality, Hellboy is not bound by reality at all. It was nice to see expansion on the themes from the first movie, as well as the Pan's Labyrinth influence on the film as well. Del Toro is rapidly becoming one of my favorite directors. 4.5/5
