I've been taking a look at potential QB options for this (hopefully) upcoming season, and there aren't any. Eagles want top picks for Kolb, who has done nothing. Orton is staying in Denver, good thing. Vince Young is not wanted by Tenn, who have 38 year old Kerry Collins and some 6th rounder named Rusy Smith (20-40, 0 TD's. 4 picks). They got rid of their coach, who had a conflict, and still don't want Young.
McNabb is 34, and was almost identical to 25 year old Henne in throwing for 3300 yard, 14 TD's and 15 picks. Palmer may have been an option but, not if you listen to his team, he has been nothing special, and would cost picks IF available.
There are a couple of guys in the draft in Newton or Gabbert but, they will be gone by our pick, and not worth trading up for. Others are projects, who will not offer any help this year.
So, to me,it looks like Henne or bust this year.
IF we can build around him in this year's draft and FA, I do belive we can be a playoff team
.
This thread is NOT about Henne but, the available options to replace him.
Thoughts?

Vince Young BABY!!!!!!
6 on the wonderlic is 600% than -0- on the wonderlic! -

Agreed.
I think Young could potentially improve our team, even in the long run, but his mental stability is a serious question. In madden or fantasy football, it's a great fit, but the guy belongs in Oregon State Hospital.
In other words, there are no viable free agent quarterbacks (are there ever?).
On the rookie front, if we don't draft Newton, Gabbert or MAYBE Kaepernick, I don't really want the guy starting in year one.
That said, I want Mallet, Locker or Kaepernick as a developmental project.
Henne or bust indeed.
What's the worst-case scenario? We go 3-13 and get Luck in '12? -

If (when) that occurs, you can be sure that we'll pair him with a veteran, whether it be one of R&R or a free agent like Williams, Addai or Bradshaw.
Throw in a guard via draft or free agency and voila. -

Ehh We Dont Have Enough Picks to be trading for a QB and i dont want us to be in the same position we are next year w/ draft picks.
Get Christian Ponder or Greg McElroy for our QB. So What if They Dont Have a MASSIVE Arm. We Dont Have Any Deep Threats to be throwing 60 yards down the field to. If We were to insert a QB w/ the weapons we have right now they'd be a good fit for us -
Would it have been worth trading up to #20 in 2005 to get Aaron Rodgers instead of drafting Matt Roth and then trading for Daunte Culpepper the next year?Rhody Phins Fan likes this. -

I'm not a fan of his style of play. The only reason he gets as many yards/scores as he does is because Cincinnati has a decent offensive line and they give him the ball 300 times a year. His averages are poor, he can't catch and he's slow. The mileage he's picking up is going to catch up with him soon and I pity the team that ends up with him when it does.... unless they're the Patriots :) All that isn't taking into account his legal issues. Miami is the last possible place Benson should be spending his time, behind maybe Las Vegas.
If you like that type of runner, I'd suggest Marion Barber as an alternative, as he's probably going to be released. He's a harder runner and doesn't have all the baggage Benson does... but again, I'm not a fan of the "grind it out" backs.
If we get Ingram, I think the perfect complement would be Joseph Addai. He's not much of an inside runner, but he's good around the edge and is one of the best pass-catching backs in the league. Perfect for third downs. He'd probably come cheap too.
Edit: Benson also had more fumbles last year than Addai has had in his career. -

This is the exact point I've been making for a month. It's not a question of do we need to upgrade the QB position, the question is where does that upgrade come from? There's nothing out there that is a clear upgrade to Henne that is going to be available to us. Any change we make at this point would simply be making change for changes sake.

Well, SB is right, barring something spectacular, Chad Henne is very likely to be the starting Qb in 2011 there are few options out there to try and replace him.
Which is why we need a Feature Back, 300+ carries, 1,500 yds, 10 TD's.
Instead of once again spending an offseason whining about a "Franchise Qb" who won't be there, why not go with what we know works in Miami, a Feature Back? Recall even Wanny was bright enough to win 11 games with RW toting the rock 350 plus times.
Add in some dash with a cat like Sheets or a draftee, or even a FA like Bradshaw, and voila!
Csonka/Morris/Kiick redux.
Maybe we are looking for the next Marino when we need the next Csonka or young Ricky Williams instead. -

Question: How do you carry the ball 321 times and the longest play you can muster is 26 yards?
Answer: Average 3.5 yards per carry and run a mid-4.6 40. -

Southbeach is right folks, #7 is likely to be the Qb when the season opens we all had better hope Ireland and Sparano assemble the best package of players to return the running game to #4 in the NFL as they possibly can.Ozzy likes this. -

Who do you like in the 3-5 rounds? I liked Dion Lewis, but he measured in at 5'6 1/2. Not good.
I'll have to look again.
Update: Shane Vereen, Bilal Powell, John Clay and Graig Cooper are a few that interest me. They're all unique from one another, so the type of back we'd pair would be different for each... but those are the prospects I like. -
Bottom line. There ain't nobody out there better, and THAT'S THE TRUTH.
Call me crazy but, I have to think the best thing, this year, is to support Henne, and wish him the best. JMHO -
Take Aldon Smith and have him put a hand in the dirt on passrushing downs, but a Rb, if they were a Feature Back, would be worth it to me.
But maybe not to Ireland if he sees him as a part time player..why invest a #15 pick into 200 touches rushing and receiving?
Or add Ingram, put Lexxy in the RW role, then let Sheets compete with whomever they draft, I'd suspect we add 2 running backs, one early, one late, would like a Lewis or Royster later in the draft.
Or Tawain Jones. -
Benson is no AP, but IMO he has better feet, vision and burst than Ronnie. He's not a good receiver like you said, but he's had less wear and tear than Addai or Barber, who never seem to finish a season. I think outside of DWill Benson may be the best option available, all depends on the $$$ though. -
"Henne or bust" will be about the case in Miami I 'm afraid unless something changes with Ross's pocketbook or we get very fancy and very lucky in the draft. This is really nothing more than a classic case of 'supply and demand'.
This is a banner year for QB's with 7 teams needing a solid QB and the QB draft crop lighter than usual. If there was ever a time for an average QB to grab big bucks in FA or a draft QB to go higher than normal - it is this year. Therefore I don't expect to see Penny or Thiggy back with Miami as they will draw bigger bucks and more play time elsewhere.
Next years draft class is deeper at the QB position than this year so I expect us to build all the other positions and get our QB next year. "Henne or bust" will be the case in Miami next year I think. Freakin' like it - or - freakin' lump it.padre31 likes this. -
"It is no sin to punt the ball"
Well, let's see if Sparano comitts to some olinemen and whether all of his development effort pays off, if guys like Garner and Murtha come through for us things won't be so bleak...but we will be running the ball..a lot.
We need the next Csonka/Morris/Kiick. -

Either way, I don't want Bradshaw (or Williams). I was just throwing ideas out there; I want an Ingram/Addai backfield. -
Carey, Ricky, Ronnie, Bell and Crowder all need to be replaced and I expect that will be addressed early in the going in this draft. It wouldn't surprise me if we didn't even draft a QB before we plug a few other needs. This team is really in bad shape and at least two years away from serious contention (if all goes well).
-
Heck, we were winning with Fiedler -
possible running stable: Ingram, Ronnie or Ricky with Cobbs, Sheets & Polite
with a dominant offensive line, would go far to bringing out the best in any QB
coupled with a real return specialist & our defense, the season could worth watching -
with Henning gone, i can only hope that we see more of '09 Henne than '10 Henne .... what i am certain of - is that it won't be as bad as last year.
Pads ... i prefer Ayers for OLB IF we went that way .... but remarked about that in my thread. I am aiming for a 70s repeat -- all i want is Bob Griese, not looking for Marino .... with a running offense and stifling defense.
but this team is certainly NOT in bad shape at all .... we have 5-7 shortages that can all be reasonably addressed THIS year.padre31 likes this. -
We can't give away those early in the season, 1pm starts again if we take this approach, but it is far easier to build a team to do that, and have a Good but not Great Qb than it is to push a losing proposition of overdrafting a Qb who may or may not pan out.
Those are manageable holes though.
Kris O'Dowd could easily be taken in the 3rd or 4th rd and step right in at Center, Garner at LG and RG easily could be John Jerry or even Rey Feinga. -
The one thing you might have a made a great point about is something you never mentioned and that is the fact that he also had 1112 carries in College.
