Really good read about what happened after the news broke. Pennington and Henne have one hell of a relationship.

So Pennington, the closest bystander to the situation besides the staff states outright that it's not Henne's fault. That line right there says it all for me.

You get the feeling that if it were up to Pennington, even he would keep Henne out there. This is just baffling.

One of the things Pennington said at the end of his press conference got me thinking. He mentioned something to the effect of "One of the great things about this situation is I'm at the end of my career, and Chad is at the beginning of his, so we're not two dogs fighting for the same piece of meat."
What that says to me is that Pennington doesn't expect to be competing with Henne for a starting spot next year.
So that bears in mind the question. Is Henne being benched for the remainder of the year because Pennington is better for this system, and playbook? Is it possible Henning realizes that the types of plays he's asking Henne to make, don't work towards his strengths?
And if Pennington is suggesting he won't be here to compete with Henne soon, does that mean that the coaching staff believes that Henne will compete next year? If so they wouldn't throw him into the same system they feel failed him/he failed at.
A lot of this "It wasn't his fault" stuff seems to me to really push that theory. The theory that they tried to turn him into a Pennington clone because they were retaining Henning for the year (for whatever reason), and realized it wouldn't work, so they scrapped that plan, and are going to see if Henne can be salvaged next year?
I'm just throwing out ideas here. I really am just hoping and praying we don't see him go somewhere else, and make us regret giving up on him.dolfan7171, Ophinerated, DOLPHAN1 and 1 other person like this. -

That being said, I get the move for the next 8 games, to win some games, win over some fans, wonderful... great... but we need to be thinking beyond these next 8 games as well. -
HORRIBLE move. they should have let Henne finish the year

Game Plan installs vary every week depending on who a team is playing.
You can change a ton of things and "stay in the system".
This staff simply dosent know what they want to do.Ophinerated and Killerphins like this. -
That is a crock. When you have a young QB throwing the ball 35 times a game there are bound to be mistakes. They didn't do the necessary things to allow Chad Henne to be successful. Then you bench the guy even though it isn't his fault. Jesus the guy had to take time to calm down because he is devastated. How in the hell can you sit there and say people are reading too much into. I'm reading the story about a guy who has never been benched before ever. He says it in a way that leads you to believe he will suffer from this benching. If he doesn't get his confidence back we don't want him? Are you kidding me. They didn't give him a chance to get complete confidence then they rip out his heart and soul. Personally I think your post is one of the worst I've read on the subject. For one you can't even possible know a damn thing about how Henne is truly feeling inside. Observing for a while you say... Henne already observed for a year and won the job only to get the hook from a ridiculously impatient coach who couldn't develop Dan Marino. Your post is as ridiculous as the whole mess. This whole thing is on Dan Henning and his inability to manage an offense. I feel bad for Chad Henne and I hope for him he gets a chance to play for a team that isn't going talk him up then leave him to fail and kick him to the curb.Ophinerated and Rocky Raccoon like this. -

It's pretty clear fans here are negative against the coaching staff and that's understandable. I like TS but don't think he's a very smart coach. I do think Nolan is. Henning is just part of the NFL's "Old Boy's Network" and that's not a positive thing.
That said, I think that there is a positive here. Pennington has great leadership skills.
I wouldn't read too much into Penny's support of Henne. I think that's part of his tremendous leadership skills.
Bottom line - the best leaders in general are guys who are humble and get others on board contributing. The only negative about Pennington is arm strength. The fact that he's had a lot of time to rest and develop his arm is a positive. It won't be real strong but it may actually be fresh enough to get it done.
Otherwise, he is uber-intelligent; he is a quicker decision-maker; he throws a catchable and extremely accurate ball. So, if he just throws it where Marshall can fight for it - we may have a real bonus there.
Finally, if the play calling continues in similar fashion, the throws Penny will have to make are doable. Marshall is not a big deep threat anyway. He's an over the middle guy.
The big thing is whether Penny will be able to shake off the rust of a year of not playing.
Personally, I think Penny should now start the rest of the year unless we get to the final 3-4 weeks and we are mathematically eliminated.
Not real positive about this game - with Moss coming in - and Tennessee has a great defense. But, into the weeks to come I think it could be interesting and beneficial.HolliFinFan likes this. -

The fact is, most young Qb's are either benched, or come dangerously close to being benched, Elway, Penny, Young, Steve Young, it is a part of the make up to overcome it and play better when and if you get the chance to play.
Meanwhile, I think I'm going to rent "where the Red Fern grows" and think about Chad Henne...:lol:HolliFinFan likes this. -
Laugh now and make jokes but when Pennington picks up where he left off in 2009 the smiles and the laughter will leave.
