Forget signing Garrard. Just promote Devlin. This is all lining up perfectly. Just perfectly.

 

I think realistically this might be the kind of situation Garrard has been waiting for. He's got a possibility to earn a starting job, and if he does well hold on to it.

 

Henne is in the last year of his contract, I don't see any reason to remain cautious.

 

You don't want to send a guy out there who could get seriously injured. Henne has been getting killed as it is behind our line, now we are going to send him out there with a busted shoulder that is 100% certain to get whacked, hits, etc., several times during the game?

I appreciate that the guy is tough and wants to play, but if there is a real chance of serious injury and likely ineffectiveness even if he stays on the field, what's the point?

 

The only point should be putting the best team on the field. I don't think it will have much impact on his performance, and he'll likely look to get the ball out sooner, which could be a positive.

 

Starting Pat Devlin and eschewing more competent options would essentially constitute cheating given the circumstances.

Henne's in a contract year so of course he wants to play. His teammates and coaches know he gives them the best chance to win (keep their jobs) so they'll want him to play.

But if I'm on the marketing/finance side of the building then I'm hoping Henne never sees the field, the team tanks, and we get ourselves a shiny new QB that will get the fans excited and put some asses in the seats next year.

I wonder how much those within the organization are thinking about Luck. Obviously, many are working to keep their jobs and there's always pride, but I wonder if a guy like Ireland, who could feel safe, is thinking that if he puts Henne on IR (or just encourages that route) that he increases his chances of getting Luck. GMs with franchise QBs tend to have winning teams. And GMs who build winning teams are usually thought well of. I hate to think of any team tanking on purpose, but those decision makers are people just like the fans on this board. They will, at times, come to the same conclusions. I would expect that at a minimum Ross has considered that if the team tanks this season but then adds the next Manning that his financials might look much better in the long run.

What were they cheating for? To get Patrick Peterson? I don't see the motivation really.

ETA: didn't Hall actually earn the backup spot in TC? I'm not sure how thats intentionally losing when he was promoted that early.

I'm sure there were numerous veteran QB's they could have signed. They chose not too. And nowhere did I suggest playing devlin. You play Mat Moore. I'm just saying we shouldn't sign Garrard. It's pointless.

 

Sparano isn't going to start Devlin. And a possible interim HC isn't going to either.

 

If trying to put the best team on the field (which I'm suspecting you are opposed to), then it is pointless.

 

Again, I did not suggest Devlin actually play. Just make him the backup. Play Moore.

 

Who's to say that Moore isn't better for this team right now than Garrard anyway? Moore knows the system and actually has played regular season football. Garrard has been picking his nose for a month.

Similar situation in Indy. Painter is not a better QB than Kerry Collins in a vacuum but he is better for the Colts, right now.

 

Why would they play Moore when David Gerrard gives them a better chance to win? Neither Sparano nor Ireland are likely to benefit from suck for Luck.

 

C'mon. Cheating? Cheating is going way over the cap like the 49ers did in 94' to win a Super Bowl. Cheating is filming the opposing teams hand signals like the Patriots. Putting in a crappy QB is far from cheating.

I don't know that this is the case. Garrard has been sitting around doing nothing for a month. He doesn't know the system. Moore has started games in the past and knows this sytem and the players. It's just like the collins/Painter dynamic in Indy. Painter is Indy's better option even though all things being equal Collins is a betetr player.

No. Painter is the better option for that team, at this moment in time. You saw it last night. His teammates were more comfortable, the offense looked better, etc.

 

Regardless, I'm not sure how that makes Pat Devlin a better option than Gerrard if you're trying to win.

Unless their families feed on platinum lobsters and diamond caviar twelve times a day, I'd wager the guess that the 30+ million dollars they've made by now will last them for a year of unemployment.

 

Garrard could be thinking that he wants to be a long term starter somewhere and that signing with a team that is doing so poorly and very likely to draft a QB high next draft just puts him back in the situation he was in in Jacksonville. Or really a worse situation since he won't know the system and could just end up lowering his stock going into the offseason.

 

I disagree. The league can't force a team to sign some over priced veteran rather than bring up the young guy from the practice squad that they've been grooming for months. That would be absurd.

 

Because all athletes put away their money... Ask Bernie Kosar. A paycheck is a paycheck. Turning that down, as well as opting to sit out a year, not getting to show future teams your stuff, is a little weird. It's not like teams have been beating down their doors. Maybe I can understand Delhomme, because he's done physically. However, DG should of jumped at the opportunity.

Are you kidding? Knowing Sparano, since it's a separated non-throwing shoulder he'll not only suit the guy up and have him start, he'll be added to 3 out of 4 special teams units.

 

Can't force them to sign someone. But they can take draft picks for cheating.

If the Indy Colts put a bunch of practice squad players on the field so they could get the #1 overall pick, I would hope the league would take appropriate action. The draft order is in place so that the teams that need the most help get it. The draft order isn't set based upon which teams feel they would be better off in the long-term with the #1 pick.

 

Why don't you ask Jake Delhomme or David Garrard? Obviously they do not need that paycheck.

Delhomme is late Marino immobile by now. He almost got killed in Cleveland last season and he's all but guaranteed to get maimed behind this thing we happen to call an OL in Miami. And unless Garrard really needs a paycheck (which obviously he does not), he's likely to get a better opportunity down the road. Henne won't be the only starter to get hurt.
