Henry Rollins is a pathetic piece of crap.
1. He's not the person who should be determining whether someone is a musician or not. Last time I checked, his claim to fame is screaming into a microphone.
2. He's turned into the same old fart he rebelled against in when he was in Black Flag. Surely, when he was in Black Flag, critics were claiming that they were just noise and not music. Now he's doing the same thing and pointing the finger at turntablists (yes, I believe that there is talent involved with DJs. Shoot me).Pagan likes this. -

The really good DJs don't just play one record at a time. Do some research. There is far more skill and art involved in a DJ Spooky record than what Henry Rollins does for a living.xer0 likes this.

Don't assume I know nothing about it. I understand they don't play one record at a time, they play 3 or 4 oooooooo. If these people are so talented then why can't they create their own music and not just cut up and blend other people's creations?
What do you know about Rollins to assume how much talent he uses? -
"Rock" has went back to it's pop commercial roots, good thing GNR released an album and Metallica as well..

Didn't really like the new GNR from what I heard (and thats coming from a long time fan of the band) . Metallica was always just OK for me. Not much for metal so I can only handle so much of them before I get a headache/annoyed.
The only band from my generation that is really still doing well IMO is the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
BTW, I think Rock was the new pop from 98 - around 2004ish. Now new hip-hop is def much more pop imo. -
I hate when I read statements like this, because they're so far off it's amazing.
The correct thing to say is that the majority of POPULAR music is garbage.
I can give you a list of bands as long as your arm that are out now that are amazing. You just have to know where to look.
As for Rollins, he shouldn't really talk...I know it's just my opinion, but as a singer he's pretty talentless. -
The same with Country music, I'm not a fan, but the top 20 stuff is NOT country music, it is soft pop/top 40 stuff.
What I do think is funny is how newish pop bands try to be creepy dark and they are just sort of ridiculous...:lol::lol:
And Pagan, C'mon man, Henry Rollins was never a talent, he was just sort of this intense guy who acted like his parent kicked him out of the house...:wink2: -
I don't think I was specific enough when I said that. We're from 2 different generations and obviously have some different tastes in music so our opinions and first reactions will definitely vary.
I'm gonna assume (and by all means correct me if I'm way off) that your very into metal. Like I said, I'm really not and the bands I do listen to in that category are much on the lighter side for that genre. When I made that statement about Rock music I was referring to bands that came on the scene during that time that I view as garbage and/or pop.
Examples would be: Nickleback, Good Charlotte, etc. and pretty much any Emo band I could ever think of.
BTW, I don't really understand why anyone ever thought Rollins was a good singer. He never claimed to be and obviously most of his worth/talent comes in the form of using his brain to relate thoughts, writing and ideas. -
lol Right. I could devote about 100 pages to why I hate country and country/pop music and rednecks in general so I'll just leave it at that.
I don't get the hate on Rollins. People act like he's all high on himself like a David Lee Roth or something. The guy never really builds himself up as some huge talent. He's just a very opinionated and aggressive person who makes his ideas known. -
This is why I stopped listening to the radio.
There are very, very good bands out there & as you stated all you have to do is know where to look - or make the music yourself :up:
I didn't ever listen to much Black Flag so the only exposure I have of Rollins is on the Tool song "Bottom" (I think it's Bottom) off Undertow. And all he does on that is this speech part in the middle of the song he doesn't sing. Also; :lol: @ "When I was 18 I remember all I wanted to do was **** on the floor and break ****". -
Definitely should have been more specific. To just say "rock music" paints things with a very broad brush.
You assume correctly, but I'm also into alot of other things. My iPod play list would shock the crap out of you! :lol:
And I'll stand by what I said, there's alot of bands that came out during that time that aren't garbage. I've said before on these boards, check out a band like Kamelot. :wink2:

Even if it is pop, it's still rock music, unfortunately. I really don't think those Nickelback fools started with the intention of making a pre-packaged pop sound to cash in. I think they just started out thinking that the crap they were producing was actually good rock music, which is sad in itself.
I stand by Rollins though. I think his aggressive attitude turns a lot of people off. But I think he's pretty funny and actually an intelligent guy if you've ever seen his TV show, articles, or any of his interviews with other musicians.
Pagan, you look like a pretty big 50 Cent fan if I've ever seen one. -
1. The best turntablists do a hell of a lot more than play a few records at the same time. Do some research and figure it out.
2. Slick, you're 24 years old. You should know that there's a ton of great bands out there who play all types of rock music. They don't get played on the radio, but they're out there. Same for country music. You got the internet. Look around.
3. Henry Rollins is an arrogant, self-important bully. That's why I don't like him. He should act more like David Lee Roth. At least we'd be able to laugh with him and at him. -
The world needs less people that act like david lee roth, not more.

What I don't like about Country in a nutshell is it is always backwards looking and internalized stuff, I really do not care about the artist's last personal relationship carried over three albums, Country music should come with a small vial of anti depressants..."Here is your SheDaisy and 10 five mg vailums"..
Now what really has my hand reaching for the "off" switch about Urban Music (to use a generalization for Hip Hop, Club, what have you) is the lyrics.
I'm old skool enough to recall KRS 1 and BDP's "You must learn" and the line "see spot run, run get spot" applies to the proverbial "T" for myself at least.
That genre has moved in retrograde Slick.
I'm not down on Rollins, nor am I up on him either, I do think he is arrogant, and intense, but for musical ability..."I'm a Liar..." was his highwater mark..:lol:slickj101 likes this. -
You sound real full of yourself when you assume that other people don't know what their talking about. I'm not going to "do some research" about something I know about and still could care less about.
Believe it or not, I've also looked around and have used the internet to find music before.
You're assuming two big things:
1. I only listen to music that's on the radio, which is completely false.
2. That anything you deem as "good music" is considered the same by other people.
And if you don't think Rollins can laugh at himself then you really haven't seen much of his work because he makes fun of himself all the time. -
I agree with all of that. Hip-hop, for me at least, is definitely moving in the wrong direction. There's a few people that I still look forward to listening to, but as a whole it's pretty bad IMO.
I feel the same way about Rollin's music. He has a few decent songs but nothing to get too excited about. I do think he's very entertaining as a person though. -
I can't consider DJs musicians. They don't make music. They are more like a juggler. It's a talent but it's not "making" music.

Which generation would the Chili Peppers be from? The 80s when they formed or the 90s when they got big?
Also; they've even slacked as far as I'm concerned (lyrically anyway) but some of their music is still good. -
I duno I'm 24 and I grew up with them so I would say both. I thought Stadium Arcadium was a damn good cd.
I like a lot of Keidis' lyrics, but I was always more drawn to their music. Hard to find a better bass player in Flea and guitarist in Frusciante from that era. Chad Smith is pretty damn nasty as well. -
It was more of a rhetorical question. I'm 23 and the first CD I was ever given was their "What Hits?!" CD.
I think the Chili Peppers were better when they were balls out funk and there was maybe a slower song or two. Now that seems to be the norm. -
I do like the funk a lot more also. They can do a wide variety of music pretty well though. The new cd is prob 40/60 with the slower songs.
I think they purposely try to make each album quite a bit different. At least that seems how its been with the last 3 or 4. -

Now I'm getting lazy and want to stop. But you get my point. In my opinion, ALL of the aforementioned bands are better than the Red Hot Chili Peppers. And I like RHCP. I was in high school when Blood Sugar Sex Magic came out. I bought that CD during my lunch hour the day it was released.
There's a ton of excellent music out there. It annoys me when people contend there is not. -

I agree and that's what makes Ringo a fantastic drummer. Peart is technically amazing but does more than is required for the song sometimes IMO. Bonham did some amazing triplets with the bass drum (amazing because they didn't have double bass drums back then) but it kinda fit the song. Listen to "Good Times, Bad Times" for a good example.
Ringo is the ultimate pocket drummer. -
Ringo doesn't get enough credit.
Listen to his fills in "A Day In the Life". Everyone rips off those fills.
