A person "briefed on the situation" tells the Miami Herald that the Dolphins' initial calls to head coaching candidates will likely be to ex-Steelers coach Bill Cowher and ex-Titans coach Jeff Fisher.
The Dolphins have either initiated contact with both coaches, "or planned to shortly." Cowher has said that he does not plan to coach next season while Fisher's agent said he would be willing to listen to all offers. Ex-Ravens coach Brian Billick, who is also reportedly on Miami's radar, confirmed that he's interested in the job.

Cowher has been my first choice for months now and if he wants the keys to this ride I think we would be foolish to not give him the keys.
I dont want Billick. As I mentioned in Club he doesnt impress me. If I wanted a Raven it'd be Ozzie Newsome. Billick just strikes me as very arrogant and he hasnt been very good since he was Minnesota's OC.
Fisher Im kind of indifferent on at this point. Hes not one of my top 5 choices but I think we could do much worse.

The interesting thing about Brian Billick is that he would probably push HARD to replace Jeff Ireland with Mike Mayock after the Draft...especially if Carl Peterson comes on as sort of a football czar that could keep an eye on Mayock and make sure he's not in over his head.
I have to be honest...I wouldn't mind that. I'm not a fan of Billick at all but I like Mayock. I think he would work as hard as anyone ever has to try and find the right players. There would be zero negligence with him as General Manager. Everything will be meticulously planned and thoroughly debated.dolfan7171, pacadermng67, PhinGeneral and 2 others like this. -

Out of curiosity, if Billick could keep Nolan as the DefCord, would he become a more appealing candidate for Head Coach?

nolan was his D coordinator in baltimore...i'm all in on billick

The issue with Cowher, Gruden, and Billick is sometimes coaches who have been out of the game for a while can get a little passed by. I know none of these guys are ancient by any means, but Fisher is just a year removed. And lets be honest, he had some great teams and faired decently despite being shackled to Vince Young. Take away one lone Super Bowl victory(in seasons that the Steelers and Ravens simply got hot at the right time), and there's not a lot of difference between these guys...including Andy Reid.

Bilick? Really? What has he ever done to make anyone think he’s the right guy to coach this roster to the Super Bowl?
There are pros and cons to Cowher, Fisher, Gruden, and the various coordinators out there. Bilick? I only see cons.Aquafin likes this. -

I do not get why everyone likes Fischer so much. He coached in one of the easier divisions and had mediocre results.

Yes solid teams I will give you but never a powerhouse. He kind of reminds me of Tony. Everybody likes him and respects him but his record is not all that impressive.

And I like the fact he has a seat on the Competition Cmte, and he was successful at developing late rd picks into All Pro caliber players. -
Cowher remains my main choice .... not getting the 'oh, he doesn't get up a 5 to watch film right now' ... it must mean his heart isn't in it deal ...
why the hell should he get up at 5 ...
the man has won consistently ... i say again - consistently ... and pushed the envelope on offense to do it.
I know Chucky has a never ending engine -- but so what. Cowher retired due to family ... unfortunately his wife is gone -- i have ZERO doubt that IF and WHEN he does take a coaching job ... he will have plenty of fire in the belly.
I have zero interest in Billick ... 'ok' with Gruden or Fisher ....Aquafin, PHINZ4LIFE and Boik14 like this. -
I'd be upset with Billick.
He was a 'genius' offensive coordinator with Cris Carter, Jake Reed, Terry Allen, Robert Smith, Randy Moss, Warren Moon and Randall Cunningham running his offenses.
He went to Baltimore and rode a Hall of Fame-laden defense and special teams to success while his offenses were.....less than prolific. 24, 16, 14, 26, 21, 31, 24, 17, 22. Those are Billick's offensive rankings in yardage in Baltimore. Did Ozzy Newsome not know how to acquire offensive talent? Things have picked up considerably under the Harbaugh/Cameron regime.
Jeff Fisher -- 6 winning seasons in 17 years. We'd be fundamentally well-coached and physical. But I also feel like we'd essentially be a philosophically more conservative version of the New York Jets. Run the ball, play defense. I think now he heads to San Diego anyway.
I'm pretty resigned to the fact that I'm not going to be happy with our selection for head coach. Really don't want Billick at all.huck1974, Aquafin, GreysonWinfield and 2 others like this. -
Unless there is some mystery guy that is just way out of left field, I don't see where ross is going with this. Maybe he really thinks he can get Cowher. -
They're not getting Cowher or Gruden (one, possibly both, of whom would be mistakes IMO...and those are their top choices). You're either going to get a retread that the fan base won't be happy with, or you're going to throw a boatload of cash at a guy who had to be convinced to take the job (a la Saban). That really, really worries and disappoints me.
It bothers me that they don't appear to be looking for the best coach. They're trying to take shortcuts and win a press conference.
I just hope there's something to Ross' "Young Don Shula" comment.SICK, WharfRat and schmolioot like this. -
Billick won a Superbowl w/ Trent Dilfer as QB. Just sayn'. His teams were consistent performers, w/out greatness at QB. Granted, his D was elite, but ours is pretty good too (and could get better, especially if Nolan hangs around). AND - Billick COULD be coaching the most talented QB he's ever had (depending on who we draft). Count me in as more than fine w/ Billick.
-
Did you guys hear Mayock last night? He said something to the effect he texted Billick about the Miami HC job and BB never replied. Every other time he texted him about anything he always replied.

IMO, it should be a credit to him. He came in, identified the strengths of the team, and went with them instead of trying to force his own philosophy upon the team.
The offense goes as the quarterback goes, IMO. Without an elite passer, it is hard to run an offense that is geared around the passing game. -
Cowher is my first choice as well coach but I just don't wanna have to put on a full fuz^%ing courst press to get him to come here, if he's gonna make this difficult and not legitimately come to us and say he's interested than to me, thats a red flag to leave his *** alone until he figures out if he wants to smile on tv or be a goddamn football coach..Quite frankly this whole we have to court you BS is wearing on me..
If I'am Ross I interview all 3..Cowher, Gruden, and Fisher, whichever one shows the most desire to want to coach the MIAMI DOLPHINS, GETS THE JOB.. -
-
Now, I hope we get Fisher more than anything. It'll be a genuine pleasure watching the doubters eat crow.

You get me Bill Cowher, Jeff Fisher or Jon Gruden, and I'll be happy. There are pluses and minuses to each one but I think they're all good coaches.

I'm wondering why people don't think the "young Don Shula" comment could have been referring to Jeff Fisher. They have a lot in common. Fisher is still young. He's been to a championship but couldn't seal the deal, same as Shula in Baltimore. You could even call their coaching styles and demeanors similar.

I live in Tn and I think Fisher would be a great coach in Miami. One thing I always knew when I watched the Titans is that they would be ready to play and play a hard nosed, even borderline dirty, brand of football. His teams would smack you in the mouth and say "what you gonna do about it!!". If Young would have had 1/2 the talent/dedication he was suppose to have things would have been a lot different in TN.

Look at how many careers have come to Miami to die, that makes an impression ceterus parabus. -
I dont think it is a given that if Miami made a big push for Cowher that he would not succeed how would any of us know this ? I think someone will ***** about it no matter who we hire.
I would not hesitate to interview Les Miles , Mike Shula , Jeff Fisher , Mike Martz , Bill Cowher , Randy Shannon (maybe) and Jon Gruden
are there any former miami assistant coaches that we could look at ? -
