This is what got Reek hurt: Hip-drop tackles will be a 15-yard penalty if at least 24 NFL owners agree with the Competition Committee that it’s time to take the technique out of the game. The Competition Committee has formally proposed banning hip-drop tackles with the following new rule: “ARTICLE 18. HIP-DROP TACKLE. It is a foul if a player uses the following technique to bring a runner to the ground: (a) grabs the runner with both hands or wraps the runner with both arms; and (b) unweights himself by swiveling and dropping his hips and/or lower body, landing on and trapping the runner’s leg(s) at or below the knee. Penalty: For a Hip-Drop Tackle: Loss of 15 yards and an automatic first down.” Several NFL players have been injured on hip-drop tackles, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said the play should be eliminated from the game. The NFL Players Association, however, has expressed skepticism that the NFL will be able to define hip-drop tackles in a way that the officials will enforce consistently. Now we see the definition. We’ll find out soon whether NFL owners are satisfied that it’s a rule to adopt this year.
Complete BS, it's hard enough tackling guys as it is. This would be another step in the slow transformation into flag football that we've been seeing over the years. At this rate in 10-15 years time what we knew as NFL football when we were kids will be unrecognizable.
Who has gotten seriously injured? The ankle sprain Tyreek had is not "seriously injured", and he also aggravated his ankle on a completely different type of tackle. If we start eliminating every kind of tackle or contact that could potentially injure players we are going to end up with flag football.
I agree with you 100%!!! Holy crap, my head just exploded lol!!! Football is 100 years old. Players have been tackled in this manner since before World War II. If this rule is adopted, in the last 10-15 years, 2 effective methods of tackling players will have been eliminated. The next thing you know, defense is going to be reduced to trying to get in the way of an offensive players and try to scare him with boogity boogity boogity scarey faces. Did I like it when Tua suffered that terrifying concussion from the hip drop tackle put on him? Of course I didn’t. Hates he got hurt, but this is football! No freaking wonder why offensive records are being shattered because defenses can’t even play defense anymore.
Talk to Mark Andrews and Tony Pollard last year. The injury rate on hip-drop tackles is about 20 to 25 times greater than on other tackles. So there's that.
Well. Football is supposed to be a physical sport. They take away this tackle, fine...but as long as there is tackling, there will be injuries. So if the goal is to prevent injuries, and every couple years you eliminate the tackling method that has highest injury percent, you eventually end up at flag football. Which honestly, I'm not currently opposed to. I think a have that was physical with blocking and stuff but no tackling, could be very fun to watch.
The NFL identified 105 hip-drop tackles in the 20,000 tackles reviewed the past two seasons. So your outrage is about roughly 50 tackles out of every 10,000 a year and that’s going to make the game somehow worse and like flag football?
But add to that question… Of the 105 hip drop tackles reviewed by the league, how many of those resulted in an injury resulting in the player being ruled out for the remainder of the game?
I don't know but what's the number for you for it to be NOT OK? And if YOU'RE the player, I guess it means so much more. Are you all for bringing back horse collars too? It wasn't that many people hurt.
I don't care if it was only 105 tackles, just one missed tackle because of a stupid rule change could completely change the course of a game. It will put defenses in even greater handicap than they already are. You eliminate one of these every few years and before you know it we are playing flag football.
Hip drop tackles are a fairly new thing. It’s a lazy and dangerous way of tackling a player. Should grabbing face masks be OK? Of course not. I read someone who asked how you’re supposed to tackle someone from behind if you don’t hip drop tackle. Really? Wrap up their legs. And it’s not like you can’t grab them and drop to the ground, you just can’t land on their legs.
Football is an inherently unsafe sport. It always has been. You can make it safER but you can't make it completely safe.
I agree but when you see injury rates 20 to 25x more than "normal" then maybe something should be looked at.
The NFLPA opposed the new rule. They're the ones playing the game, I trust them more than I do the owners or the commissioner.
Because they're worried about the money they make by having their star players on the field the whole season.
A 26 yr old hyper masculine young man sometimes needs to be protected from themself. The NFLPA said the main reason they’re against it is because they think it won’t be officiated fairly. That’s a legit complaint because NFL refs generally suck, but the tackle is very dangerous. As I’ve mentioned before it’s a relatively new thing that’s been happening. Players had no problem tackling before the first person did it and they’ll just have to learn how to properly tackle. That’s not a bad thing.
The NFLPA reps aren't hyper-masculine 26-year-olds, for the most part, they're older, more established players who've been around a long time and know the game.
