I've been using, and constantly tweaking, a power ranking formula for the past few years to help me in my office pool. Basically I wanted to help myself look past the record and reputation of a team and place a little more value on the strength of their opponents.

Using a formula that is probably approaching BCS complexity, sheer ridiculousness and inaccuracies, I share it here for your amusement as well as collective scorn and ridicule.

    ------------------------------

As far as I'm concerned there is no true #1 team in football yet this year. The Titans at 5-0 may earn that spot by default in many opinion polls, but they still have the second easiest schedule so far as their opponents are a combined 9-19 (.321) and they have yet to beat a team over .500. The Giants have the easiest so far at 8-19 (.296)

The hardest schedule so far? The Jacksonville Jaguars whose opponents are a combined 21-10. And the 3 teams they've lost to are a combined 13-2 which is why they get the 8th place ranking despite being 3-3.

The biggest drop this week, down 9 places, is Miami due to losing to 1-4 Houston. And the biggest gainer is Jacksonville who move up 12 places in large part because of beating now 4-2 Denver and because previous opponents Indy and Houston won this past week.

Included this week is the "power points" each team has earned this year based on who they've beaten, when, who they've lost to, and whether or not they've covered the spread. In () is last week's ranking. Enjoy.

    1 Arizona Cardinals 8.660 (6)
    2 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 8.600 (8)
    3 Tennessee Titans 8.450 (2)

These have become my favorite rankings on the web. Great job His'n. It seems like a very interesting formula that I think is a accurate one. I would argue that Tennessee is number one but Arizona has played well also. Again great job His'n, love these.

Arizona pads its stats at home then gets crushed going on the road. I understand the math behind the rankings, but a #1 ranked team does not give up 50+ points in a game ever.

You certainly provide an interesting take on things though and they are quite enjoyable, nice work :)
