Hogan a created darling in training camp, or the real thing?

It IS a lot of talk. Hard Knocks has recorded hours upon hours of talk, and they cherry pick from it to create what they want.
Until we see something in a game, I don't buy the hype as anything more than Hard Knocks building a character for their show.

 

If Les is gonna remain at TE, they need to teach him how to cut block or something. It's pretty apparent that he doesn't have the skookum to just square up, lock on, and control a defender. Not yet anyway. Maybe in a year or so.

Clay cut block some last season, in situations where a Lou Polite type would have muscled and mauled. It worked ok, and I'd guess his blocking will come along as he develops. If Sherm doesn't cut him that is.

 

People don't realize how much power an editor has with an abudance of footage. They're shooting 100+ hours of footage each each week. They can manipulate people easily with that amount of footage.

 

Well, I mentioned depth chart because you brought it up. None of us know how many plays Hogan has run against 1s, 2s or 3s, pct wise. Maybe the media dudes will focus on him more now and let us know. Since most of us cannot attend practices and such.

Well for one thing it was Jimmy Wilson who let the cat out of the bag that Chris Hogan has been "giving us the most trouble" and Jimmy Wilson is actively taking reps with the 1's, and will probably start this year.

So whether Hogan is repping against the 1's or not...at the very least he's giving Jimmy Wilson a hard time, and Jimmy Wilson I feel is about to be a 1 when the season starts.

 

Between those two and Jimmy Wilson, I guess that means he's been burning up some 1st string guys in addition to the 3rd string guys.

 

I think the reason he's low on the depth chart could be because he's essentially been slated for a slot position but Davone Bess and Julius Pruitt are legitimately in front of him in the slot. That may force them to put him 4th string.

 

Just watched the Hogan part in Hard Knocks. The DBs I saw him burn were in order: Vincent Agnew, Nolan Carroll, Tyrone Culver, Reshad Jones, Tyrell Johnson, and Chris Clemons. Overall, definitely not dubs he's burning! Also hearing the way the coaches (ie: Sherman and Philbin) glowed about him, he has to be in line for a spot on the 53.

 

For the record, I'm not trying to prove anything about Hogan one way or the other.
The coaches? They are trying to find the best 6 WRs they have. Their goal is to find the truth and win.
The reporters? A half dozen covering the team everyday. Their goal is to report the truth, and scoop the other guy.
Hard Knocks? Their goal is to create drama, and entertain.

The coaches can be wrong, happens all the time. The reporters can be incompetent, absolutely. I'm just not going trust Hard Knocks for truth, that isn't their goal.

 

And again, I've got to add, it was Jimmy Wilson who was asked which guy does he have trouble with in camp, and right away he came to #81 whom he suggested doesn't just give him trouble, but gives the entire secondary trouble. I mean didn't coaches say straight up on Hard Knocks that he's caught the most balls of anyone, or something like that?

 

Hard Knocks' goals are different from everyone's but you have to look at what happened not the goals of the network. What were the goals of the players praising Hogan? What were the goals of the coach saying Hogan's caught the most balls of anyone out there? What were the goals of Jimmy Wilson in labeling Chris Hogan as the guy that gives he and the rest of the secondary the most problems?

All Hard Knocks and Finsiders did was put a camera on these guys and let them speak.

I edit reality television for a living. Take all the praise and criticism the coaches and players give on Hard Knocks with a grain of salt.

The easiest way to skew a full thorough opinion is to cut the answer off before or after the guy says "but" or " however." The best example of that is Dan Campbell's on Les Brown in episode 1.
“Les Brown very coachable. Does exactly what you (say). But he’s a complete liability in pass, pro and run blocking."

How different is that assessment if you cut Campbell off before he says "but?"

 

While editors can manipulate things, there were simply to many specific comments to write this off as "just talk". Anybody who's ever spent time around a practice knows you don't get this many comments from so many different parties about one player in what is essentially two weeks. It would take five years of camp footage to get that many specific positive comments about Pat Devlin.

 

Respectfully, the problem with this logic is Bush never called Devlin "Lil Marino" to my knowledge.... and a QB has to actually make some Dan Marino caliber throws to be compared to Marino. I don't think anyone on the team or coaching staff would nickname Hogan or laud him in the manner they did if he had only gotten open a few times. Obviously it's happening a lot.

The point isn't that the praise is meaningless, the point is that you didn't hear about a single flaw in his game.
What is more likely? Hogan is flawless, or that they chose to omit the criticism?

I mean yeah maybe Hard Knocks has motivation to capture moments and spin an entertaining story out of it...but what's the motivation behind all these players and coaches pointing him out and declaring him "secret weapon" and talking about how he's always open and has caught more friggin balls than anyone here?

 

That was Jim Turner actually, lol. I don't think Philbin would say something like that. Philbin just pointed out that Hogan has gotten noticeably better as they've gone along.

 

And if I'm not mistaken that assessment from Jim Turner that Hogan has "caught more balls than anybody on the friggin field" was echoed by Armando Salguero not long after Chris Hogan got outed by Jimmy Wilson on Finsiders.

 

Over/Under 50% he makes the 53 man roster?

 

I think this is the kind of guy that sticks on the practice squad for a little while longer.

 

HBO made Hogan out to be a god on Hard Knocks.

I guarantee you there is a "but" or "however" behind every one of those bites and conversations. There is a reason a secret weapon is where he is on the depth chart.

I could be wrong, but Hogan wide open against Tampa looked like blown coverage.

 

You can edit out criticism, but you won't get that many positive comments from so many different people of all levels on any one player in two weeks if he isn't really shining. By my count, there are positive comments from his WR coach, the OC the HC, the starting running back, another WR, at least two of the three QBs and at least one DB. And the comments are specifically things like "the guy that gives me the most trouble", "he does everything right", "he's caught more balls than anybody here". These are not the kind of statements that are generally followed by qualifiers. It's pretty obvious that he's really shining and that this isn't just a case editor manipulation.

 

There is a flaw in his game keeping him where he is on the depth chart. I guarantee you the coaches conversation followed or was followed by explaining it. Hard Knocks cut it out.

 

I'm sure he's not perfect, but I'm also sure that he's really playing well and that was not faked by the editor.

 

I like the idea of a 4WR set with Hogan + Bess in the slot. Someone will be open.

 

Do you really think after last night we will be able to sneak him through waviers? Even if he is being hyped up?

 

There's absolutely no arguing against Hogan having the size, ability, and intangibles to make a roster AND contribute.
Guys like this don't grow on trees, and if he's improving and picking up the game this quickly, there's no reason to believe it'll stop any time soon IMO.
This isn't a FA type of guy from a talent standpoint. Perhaps closer to a 3rd rounder or higher in that regard.

HBO isn't paying our players & staff to manipulate a situation for ratings.

 

It's likely "inexperience" and the need for further development, which would be understandable considering his circumstance.

 

They are all playing "well," they are professionals. In evaluating players in every coaches meeting they go over all the good and the bad. If there haven't been at least 10 "good" things said about every player caught on tape by Hard Knocks, I'll quit my job and become a Jets cheerleader. Each player is on the current roster for a reason.

When you omit the negative, all the positive back to back to back cut pretty together with music made Hogan look like the perfect diamond. Because they didn't include a SINGLE flaw, he shined even brighter.

They did not give you the whole picture, they created the character they wanted. That is "faked by the editor."

 

As somebody who has spent considerable time in camps, I guarantee you that there weren't 10 good things said about every player in camp. I also guarantee that they aren't all playing well.

 

Spent "considerable time in camp" is vague. No one player or coach is everywhere at once the way the Hard Knocks cameras are. There are over a hundred players and coaches talking every day. They've been in camp for over 3 weeks. You really stand by that guarantee?

 

I was a scout at the NFL level and in those coaches meetings at the college level (but not as a coach). In those meetings you don't get universal praise. I completely stand by the statement that not every player gets 10 good things said about them. In fact, I would say that half of the players don't get 1 good thing said about them. Maybe 5% will get 10 good things said about them in the first two weeks of camp.

 

I thought if you stash someone on your PS if someone tries to sign them, you have to make them active or lose them. Or am I wrong? Wait, I think we lost Berger or someone that way right?

 

Would anyone be surprised to see Belichek pick him up if we try to stash him on the practice squad?

 

Sorry I don't buy it. Most of these scenes I've seen of players being discussed, they talk about what they are doing well, and what they need to work on, this never happened when you were present? In addition, Hard Knocks is sitting these guys down for interviews and specifically asking for positives and negatives about players. Every player, 10 easy, or they'd be cut.
