iTunes kills my CPU anytime I open it. Occasionally I use alternatives like Winamp, but iTunes its the only software I can use to download audiobooks and podcasts.
Anyone have any recommendations for making iTunes less CPU intensive? Are there any settings I can adjust?

Not that I know of. You could try going into your task manager and shutting down any unnecessary processes to help ease the usage, but if you aren't sure what you're doing you could harm your computer, or so I've been told.
Does this only happen when you run Itunes on its own or do you have a web browser open, running a computer scan, etc?

this is for disabling unnecessary programs from starting up: START > RUN > msconfig > STARTUP
EG: itunes helper, quicktime, googleupdater, etc.
did you update to the latest itunes?
there are alternative to itunes like songbird http://www.getsongbird.com/

Yea, I'm not really looking for an alternative. I do like iTunes for the most part, even if it is a resource-hog.
I think the biggest issue is that iTunes basically indexes every folder you have on your comp. Apple is all about data mining. Its mostly an issue when I first startup iTunes. -
Exactly what I was going to suggest, just make sure you don’t change anything in the other tabs unless you know what you are doing.

You can turn off the indexing. It is available so that when you add media to any folder, it shows up in your library so that you actually have some control where you store your stuff. :)anlgp likes this.

Slightly off topic but kind of on topic if you disable "indexing" in the Windows search function it can speed up search times on your machine as well. This is done by going to "My Computer -> "Right click on C:" -> "Properties" and I think it's somewhere in there. Just click the ticker off and hit "Apply"Celtkin likes this.
