Let's face it; our O has been up and down and at best average since Jimmy was coach. Sure we had the gadget Wildcat one year and Ricky was a beast (hence my screen name). Our D has always been our calling card as long as I can remember and was also a highlight of the 70's teams. To me, the best D was when we had Buddy Lee, JT, Marion, Surtain and Madison. But after that fell apart we were still a dominant D and ALWAYS stopped the run.
So that brings us to last year. How the hemorrhaging #@*# did Vance Joseph come in and put together the worst defense in team history (don't give me a bunch of stats on how the '67 team had a worse defense when it was raining unicorn horns as this is simply based on what I remember from watching every game since 93) and get a HC job out of it? I mean this blows me totally away. He was a terrible DC so I'm super glad he was gone as he was in charge of that mess (sure we had ZXY talent on roster from Philbin but he had a whole draft and free agency and training camp). I'm also aware of the number of injuries.
Last year's D was ranked:
#29 in total yardage
#18 in points allowed
#30 in rushing yards allowed
#15 in passing yards allowed (meh)
SO in short, the performance of the D last year was putrid. Other teams have injuries too. He doesn't get a pass for that.
Based on how he ran our D, I can't wait to watch the Broncos fall apart. Glad he's gone. New DC seems to have his head on straight and solid respect from the team.

I've been saying this all during the off-season...I have no idea what the fascination with him was. He sucked as DC
-
I'd say you guys should cut him a little slack. Yes the D was historically bad last year, but I've also never seen one side of the ball hit with as many injuries as last years D was. Add to that the fact that even if they had been healthy we had a horrible linebacker group to start with, I've never been a fan of Koa Misi, so basically we had Kiko Alonzo (and he missed time too) and a bunch of stiffs and backups before camp even started. Frankly, I expected them to draft heavier on the D last year because you could see all the holes we had but they went offense last year.
For what he had to work with, I think he did a pretty darn good job keeping that side together with bubble gum and bailing wire.
Also the worst DC this team has ever had was Tom Olivadotti. That guys bend don't break philosophy cost us more wins in the prime of Marino's career, and possibly a Super Bowl or two, than any other factor. Even now I cant stand watching a prevent defense on the field because it looks too much like an Olivadotti coached D. After watching his D for all that time I want full pressure every darn play.
He was already a head coach in waiting based on his career before he got here so it really didn't matter how he performed with us anyway. -
Pretty much what Tin Indian said. The defense was littered with newbs and journeymen. I'm getting flashes of Donald Butler and Baccari Rambo being blocked out of run plays as I type this. It's quite frankly, a miracle, that our PPG ranking was as good as it was.

Yeah? Well I'm not giving him ANY slack like zero. I'm so tired of having to understand people's situations and how they really tried really really hard (this is what's wrong with this country is people are wayyyyyy too understanding let's give him a medal for effort while we're at it). No one wants to understand mine. If I screw stuff up I get fired. If I screw it up as bad as he did at my job I might get sued. F him. Defense was a travesty last year and even the starting LB's sucked. This guy couldn't figure out that Mario was terrible? Every team has injuries. Booh freaking hooh. His job is to fix it and have the backups and then their backups ready to go in and win. They didn't and embarrassed the team and cost us multiple hours of offense from not being able to get their sad asses off the field.
He's a loser. Glad he's gone.

Oh.. I'm sorry. I thought we were talking about the DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR. He decided to have those players on HIS roster.
No. He did not decide to have those players on HIS roster. That is on Tannebaum. The defensive coordinator's job is not to sign players.

Are you joking? They all talk and discuss the roster. Tannenbaum serves the coaches needs on the roster. Watch a Hard Knocks.
And what never goes noted, Kiko playing with literally one arm.
I watched some reps with him playing with that club..it was not cool..he should be commended for his loyalty to our team..

They talk about it, however Tannenbaum makes the decisions and combines the research to bring up the players to present to the coaches.
Plus Butler and Paysinger were playing due to injuries as well. Putting the fact that they were on the roster on Vance Joseph makes it seem like you just have a dislike for him and want to blame him for everything.
Plus, he isn't even on the team right now. What is even the point of bringing him up?

Uh yeah. Good point. Just wanted to get all that out there.
If your car stops running do you throw it out and get a new one or do you think it may be important to find out why it stopped running? Like maybe it's out of gas, or do you just say"eff it, screw that car, if it wanted to be here it wouldn't have run out of gas"?
That's a very meandering metaphor. Was the Captain of the Titanic responsible for hitting the iceburg? Yeah it was his ship and his crew missed it.
There was nothing meandering about the point at all.
You are railing against fixing problems through diagnosis. You think if there's a problem just throw out X.
As for your example, how do we know whose fault it was unless we actually review what happened and assess the reasons the iceberg was hit?
If you take your stance out to it's logical conclusion, then there's no problem anywhere that cannot be overcome by anyone for any reason. Without assessing the problem how do we know a crew member didn't screw up and the captain took the proper actions that allowed there to be survivors at all?

The defensive coordinator is not applicable to the captain of a ship. He would more be like the guy in charge of the people throwing the coal in the engine.

He was the Defensive Coordinator. He was in charge of the successes and failures of everyone on the defense. The unit was not prepared or able to recover from the injuries and played deplorably. That was his job to make that happen. He failed at that job. What part of that do you not get. Do you want him to still be here DIAGNOSING?
I haven't given you attitude.
Try and follow. How do you know, based on the level of injuries we had that our defense shouldn't have played worse than they did? For all you know, Joseph had a herculean attempt at coaching with what he had to work with.
Or maybe he didn't.
But you don't know because you are taking an extremely simple approach to a complex problem.
Why not blame Gase?

Really? Thats your argument? That we should be grateful for his guidance that allowed for us to field the worst defense in team history? Sure. If I kick you in the balls will you thank me for not also running you over with a tractor trailer?
What's with the never ending contrarian stance? Do you do this when it's too hot to go out and kick puppies and flip over lemonade stands?
bro just let it go.
don't let a great time of the year be ruined
I'm sorry, but what a bad analogy.
He's one of the top 3, on a ship that's the captain, the 1st mate and the pilot/sailing master, so he was either the 1st mate or the master, seeing as how Gase was also OC, that would make Joseph the 1st mate and Gase the captain-pilot.
All you have to do is look at the focus of our free agency and draft to see how our current coaching staff felt about last year's personnel. They KNEW it had to be addressed in the offseason, big time.. Meanwhile, Vance Joseph gets hired to a team that has garnered a bit of a defensive reputation the past couple years. How could he have pulled that off if he wasn't doing something of note as a defensive coordinator? Could it be that the Broncos brass knows a little bit more about the X's and O's than a regular fan would (me, you, etc.)?
Nah.
Worst defense in Dolphins' history (?) but we made it to the playoffs with that defense as part of the equation. We were 12th in takeaways (9th in INTs)- a big factor in defensive success I think! Maybe cbrad can double check that for me.
Yeah I don't know, I'm gonna stick with the defense was bad because most of the players were bad. If they weren't bad, they were new.

Worst D in Fins history is misleading.
We were the 7th or 8th most injured defense in the NFL last season and were signing guys off the street like Rambo and Butler.
While we gave up a ton of yards, we actually weren't the worst in team history for points allowed. Dom Capers oversaw the worst scoring defense in Dolphins History in 2007.
