I think a downfield WR is less of a threat than their slot WRs because we cant get to Brady on the quick throws

The thing about Cooks is, he's also dangerous on quick throws. I love Cooks. Huge fan of his while with the Saints, one of my favorite receivers out there. His first year, he was used as a gadget guy almost. Okay, not Tavon Austin gadget, but he was used on shorter routes (even though he was very fast). That's why his ypc and TDs were so low. He was definitely misused that first year.

So don't assume he's going to only be a deep threat. The Patriots like to throw quick to their perimeter WRs as well. Edelman is known as their slot guy (which is actually Amendola) but before last year, he didn't even run 50% of his routes from the slot. He was in the 40s% area.

So that actually makes it tough for our DBs if a guy like Cooks can catch quick passes or can burn you deep.

The Falcons successfully clogged the middle against the Patriots but Belichick adjusted, and they started to throw more to Hogan and Malcom Mitchell in the SB. He's basically going to do whatever and adjust to any strategy.

I do like the chart they have. Kudos to CK who mentioned our defense is slow from LB and on back. The article mentions 4.45 and below and slow.

Not always. We have to get to Brady this fast. That's how fast it can go.

Our defensive line has to get pressure on Brady QUICKLY, containing him in the pocket and collapsing that pocket just as quickly

 

With a long time playing and a headset that stays on, Brady doesn't need a lot of time to throw...which is why they signed Cooks. We need to apply serious inside pressure.

 

Yup, that's the only way when you have a 4.5 speed guy covering a 4.3. Light him up to give your DB's time and then hope the safety is there to support you if it goes deep.

The good news is that it's the same problem we've had in recent years (excluding last season)...it takes time to set up a deep strike. With our front seven crashing down, you'd hope that the big play isn't there very often.

 

Pretty sure Philbs and Coyle would put Phillip Wheeler on him.

Watched the replay of Denver v New England from last season and the pressure they put on Brady? That's the pressure we need to put on him. If our defensive line can get that pressure on him and the linebackers can cover the quick slants, it's more than possible to shut down that offense.

It's a matter of execution and pressure. Hopefully Matt Burke is gearing up our defense for the task that lies ahead.

He was really bad in 2013, and 2014. But I remember when we played them (Knowshon Moreno's one hit wonder with us) and I remarked how zippy his passes were. I said at the time, he has nobody to throw to, with Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson etc. as his targets deep.

Belichick offered this response:

For one year at least, just the addition of Hogan increased his numbers. We have to hope Cooks doesn't have as great of an effect. It really hurt to have Cooks go to the Patriots. Luckily, Cooks wasn't as great on grass as he was on turf (but last I looked into it, that may be on Brees more than the receivers).

 

Since my first three or four draft picks every year end up hurt and out for multiple games if not the season I plan on stopping him by drafting him first round. I may go Brady in the second. And then pick their D and Gronk and we'll win for sure.

That and I'd set him up to have a business meeting with Mr Jones. A memorable one.

 

While we are at it, lets move Phillips to slot corner.

 

Brady gives JT massive props. Says, sure there other great pass rushers, but he played against JT and put him up with the greatest of all time. And he is. Bruce Smith, Reggie White, Deacon Jones and Gino Marchetti , Jason Taylor. Only first ballot HOF DE's. In fact, Brady wrote a letter on JT's behalf, and not Ty Law who was also first time on the ballot :D

JT was really one of the greatest of all time, not just on the Dolphins, and not just this era.

 

besides Randy Moss Monster years back then, every WR in NE suffers, Cooks is also pretty inconsistent since he entered the league under 50 yards in 6 games last year again
