Considering what was said regarding Sparano's feelings on Pennington, I don't see us using a roster spot for him next year.

Scared because I believe there's about a 10% chance it'll work out. That might be generous.

If Penny were healthy we'd be set at the QB position. (at least in terms of QB for now)

Though if Penny were healthy for this and last year, we're probably in the midst of 3 straight playoff years IMO. Just doesn't work out that way sometimes. :(

 

Pennington is done. He was healthy last season and he lasted two plays. The shoulder is shot.

 

I don't see Penny here next year, he in fact says he is 50/50 on retirement or playing.

I think there is a better chance that he coaches someplace (even here since his family is said to love Florida)

 

Pennington was done after that Chargers game...... Sparano's failure to see that should be added to the list of reasons for him to be fired. He was barely touched when he was injured VS San Diego, being injured on the first play this season should have been a surprise to no one.

And no, he's not NFL coaching material either........ he's a great guy that everyone likes and respects. Just leave it at that.....

 

I guess you have not been listening to every coach he played for, they all say he has a brilliant football mind and would make a great coach.

So I'll listen to them on this one.

 

I'd think the FO was completely nuts if Penny came back. You cannot play QB in the NFL after 4 shoulder surgeries, and hopefully the cluster of fools in Davie realize this.

 

And he did what for Henne as his "mentor"? Teach him the art of checking down?

Penny was never more than a barely above average QB.....ever

Now yeah he may have potential to be a great coach some day....... but to think he's ready right now is just blind homerism

 

I love Pennington, but he's damaged beyond repair....and I mean that he can not take a hit anymore.

 

I think re-signing him and having him wait in the shadows, putting even more pressure on Henne was a huge mistake last year. I also am on record as saying I thought he was brittle and offered nothing as a player. So no, I would deff not want him back this year.....

I do respect and like him tho and think he's a terrific guy...... I just don't want him on this team

 

I would be ecstatic. Our QB problem would be solved and we instantly become a better football team. I have no issues with Henne as our backup while he learns and continues to develop.

Maybe draft, after next draft, we could make a play for Andrew Luck or another QB who comes out. You have to admit that is a very positive outlook and is exciting to think about.

I would want one hell of a backup plan for when his shoulder explodes upon impact. And given that expectation, that backup may as well be the starter.

How about let's NOT bring back Pennington. He is a great guy and has given the Phins his best, but it is time to move on. We need to bring in another veteran player (maybe Vince Young? Kevin Kolb?) and draft a QB. Henne is the only QB I want coming back. I would like to see Vince Young, Chad Henne, Colin Kaepernick as our QB's next year. I think taking Kaepernick in the 4th round round would be a low risk move.

 

Ok but that Ravens game really skews those stats. When your WRs are Brandon London, Ted Ginn, and a rookie Bess added in that Dan Henning was his offensive coordinator, do you really think he had much of a chance that game? Cassell's numbers from yesterday make Chad's look good, and the Chiefs were actually running the ball pretty decently when the game wasn't in blowout mode. Chad didn't have that luxury. 52 yards at 2.5 ypc vs 108 yards at 5.7 ypc.

Even look at brady's stats from last years wild card game. His and pennington's from 08 aren't that far apart. Baltimore is making a habit of this

Pennington's shoulder cannot be counted on. He was barely touched in the Tennessee game. That shoulder is finished. Pennington is one of my favorite QBs of all time, but it would be completely irresponsible of any coach or FO to count on him as even a backup, let alone a starting QB.

I said he is going to go into coaching, I didn't say he was going to be named anyone's head coach.

Henne was taught what the staff wanted him to be taught, to check down and not make mistakes, you can go back and search Sparano saying it all preseason, it had nothing to do with Pennington.

 

Not sure when exactly, but in the week following Pennington's injury, at a PC, Penny essentially said that Sparano told him that all these shoulder injuries might just be a sign that its time to hang it up. He said he knew he could come back, but thought that he might be hurting a team in doing so. Sounded to me as if Sparano told Pennington that he wasn't going to take the risk next year with him.

 

What would you expect him to say, DJ? "My shoulder is completely shot and if a DE looks at it cross eyed it will probably require a 10th season ending shoulder surgery."

Of course he's going to say the surgery went great. And his doctor will too. Pennington is a competitor and probably still wants to play.

That doesn't change the fact that Tony Sparano would be a complete FOOL to rely on him as a starter, or a backup for this season given his injury history. Now maybe if he could prove the shoulder was in REALLY good shape, you could potentially keep him as a #3 QB for this season, but even that is risky.

 

DJ I understand your angle here on Penny and how it would save having to search for a QB to bring some competition for Henne but man they did all the stuff they needed to get Pennington prepared last season and look what happened. These aren't fluke injuries bro. The tried to fix it for real each time they cut into it but there is only so much you can do. Given the arm strength before the last two surgeries I would have said no. Hell I thought it was suicide to play him at all last season. He is done bro. The idea is appreciated and all but a team would have to be out of their minds to consider him again given the history. Time for Chad Pennington to hang up the cleats for good.

And plenty of ppl have been calling for us to make him everything from QB coach to OC..... right now. Without any coaching experience at all........ that's blind homerism.

 

Bad idea to hinge the success of a season on a guy with a giant question mark as an arm. Seriously, that's what it looks like now after all his problems. It looks like a question mark. Not to mention spending an offseason with him taking all the 1st string snaps etc. If he goes down early, then all those practice snaps are wasted and we're right back to square 1.

Plus Penny doesn't really fit the "opening up the offense" mentality that Sparano referenced. On the next pass Penny attempts over 40 yards, you might see his arm fly 20 yards down the field with it.

 

We make Penny the starter and we might as well try to talk Bryan Cox out of retirement to play LB.

Just to ask....what made you draw your conclusion that he is not NFL coaching material?

 

With Sparano's job hanging in the balance, I'm inclined to doubt that we use a 1st round pick on a QB. He's going to want immediate performance from the position with a vet or even Henne who has 2 years of experience instead of a rookie who will need a few years to develop.

If Tony wants to keep his job, then he's going to need as much performance & success out of this team next year as possible, which means our draft picks will have to impact from game 1 if possible. You wont get that from a 1st round QB.

 

Its not blind homerism. The man was a Rhodes Scholar finalist and graduated college with a 3.83 GPA. He also has a documented photographic memory.

Chad Pennington's ability to watch and breakdown film...and then remember every small aspect of what he saw in game tape....minute details...would make him an amazing play caller. So...any argument that should Chad Pennington decide to be that type of coach...is one that is made in sound information.....not just "he will checkdown...blah..blah..."

 

After the fiasco in the Titans game, he's done. He needs to pursue other alternatives.

Now if you want to name him an assistant of some kind and let him work his way into it, then fine. But to just hand him the responsibilities of a coach, would be highly irresponsible.

Pennington should start as a Qb coach. Hell, that's what he's been for the last two years anyway. I think he'd be a good one, if all the accounts are to be believed. Head coach or OC are a bit beyond his resume' at this point.

 

Or just being blind to his potential of being a coach on your end?

And penny was coaching on the sidelines after his surgery.

I'm not saying he is going to be a great coach or a coach on our staff, but I'm not blind to the fact the guy has potential either.
