OK, so let's assume that the Rams get the #1 pick and we get #2 or #3. My guess is that the Rams will be looking to either trade Bradford or try to move the #1 pick for a boatload of picks. So my question is: Would you rather trade for Bradford (call it a 2012 2nd rounder and 2013 1st rounder) and still be able to land a WR or Tackle with our 1st round pick in 2012 OR Trade our 2012 1st rounder, 2nd rounder, and a 2013 2nd rounder to move up and take Luck. I think both trades are about the value it would cost to either get Luck or Bradford. I'm curious what everyone thinks. I think I would still lean to the side of trading up to get Luck. It's a lot to give up but in watching Luck play the last 2 years, he is that much better then Bradford. Now if it takes our 2012 1st rounder to get Bradford, then you do whatever it takes to move up and get Luck instead. I'm using the example of being able to keep our 1st rounder and get Bradford but have to give up our 2012 2nd rounder and 2013 1st rounder.
If the Rams do end up with the #1 overall pick and want Luck I would happily take Bradford. With signing bonuses taken out of that deal, you have a QB that has shown something on a ridiculously ****ty team. Now as far as how much it would cost to get him, figure with the cost of Carson Palmer a fair deal would be the first round pick. It's not a bad scenario.
I would think it would take a lot more than a 1st and 2nd rounder to get Bradford. Even then, I'm not sure I'd do it, as opposed to taking Landry Jones. If the Rams end up with the #1 overall pick, that will be somewhat of an indictment of Bradford IMO.
There are a number of scouts that think Landry Jones will turn out to be equal to, if not a better, prospect than Sam Bradford was. My first choice is trading up for Luck, but failing that, I might just as well hold onto the pick and save my draft choices.
Who would pay the 1st and 2nd considering the the first we're giving is a high first in a good draft. As far as Landry Jones that's fine too. I wouldn't mind that especially with the right coaching.
The OP mentioned giving up a 2012 2nd rounder and 2013 1st rounder. I would hope our 2013 1st wouldn't be in the top 10. The reality is, if you don't have a top-10 pick next draft, and you need a QB, you won't be able to find one for much cheaper than two firsts. The Redskins could be a likely suitor if the Rams end up with the #1 overall pick.
In the "trade-up to get Luck" scenario, we would have more ammo than any other suitor, cause we will likely have a top-3 pick. Any team that trades down with us will not drop very far. Our 2012 first rounder will be much more valuable than the Redskins or the Cowboys or any other team rumored to be interested.
Not going to go into an extended stubborn discussion between us on this one. That said on a more interesting note if Urban Meyer becomes HC and Luck is not the guy we get in the end, who do we draft? A guy by the name of Alex Smith succeeded under Meyer so it wouldn't be crazy to think another pocket passer could too. Landry Jones?
I'd be happy with Landry Jones and retaining the say #35 overall pick, we still need a RT/OLB/Te TBH, I'd also like a dominant type of ILB, for all of the Qb talk, we have a long history of HoF types of ILB's that I'd like to get back to in Miami.
If Miami can't draft Luck, I would be happy to take Sam Bradford. However, Sam Bradford is not going ANYWHERE. The Rams are NOT drafting Andrew Luck. They need talent on that offense and have none. Their line sucks, their backs suck, their WR suck.
How? It's not like he sucked his rookie year. He played great. Rookie of the year. It's not his fault his team is trash. He has the worst talent deficit of any QB in the league. He's in year 2, not year 4.
Agreed, but if the Broncos or Jags are interested and they are only 4 or 5 picks away, it's going to take a 1st, 2nd, and probably 1st next year for us to move up.
one of those teams will just sign Henne ... and he will prove to be much better than he got here -- as everyone seems to do when they leave this coaching staff.
Jones seems like he would be just as good as Bradford. Also I think Bradford's salary would be much higher than Jones'. So combine that with trading a #34-35 pick, I would say hell no. JMO though.
He didn't play great IMO. He was good, at best. The talent on that offense isn't that bad either. He has Stephen Jackson, an OL that has been given a lot of resources, and they just drafted Lance Kendricks. Not to mention they also brought in Josh McDaniels. His WRs aren't very good, but there is still enough talent on that team for them not to have the worst record in the NFL.
Guys, in such a scenario, to get Luck, it's going to take at LEAST two #1s (including our '12 #1 of course), and probably more. We're talking about - perhaps - the best college prospect .... ever? Put simply, the guy is as flawless a QB prospect who has come into the league in I don't know how long. Probably cleaner than even Manning at this point. Dude is going to be a star. With that in mind, I'd be fine w/ trading our #1 the next two years, and a #2 in either year. Heck, throw in Vontae if that's what it takes. I want this kid on my team ASAP!!!! Now, if ownership doesn't seem as generous w/ their draft picks as I am, I'm fine w/ Landry Jones. He's not Luck, but he's an excellent player, great arm, and he takes chances, refuses to give up. That will hurt him early on, but once he gets past that, he is going to be an excellent QB, and we could do FAR worse. As for Barkley, I watched a lot of him recently, and he reminds me of .... Sanchez. Too much dink and dunk for my tastes. That said, he's an option. But not my first or second choice even.
Need to pick a top shelf qb!! End of story. Anyone else tired of retreads?? Ugh sell the farm if needed.
And it looks like if it's not us, it's going to be Indy. Now, of course they may want to take him and have him learn under Peyton, but does Luck want to? I can see him making a stink so he can start day 1, rather than in year 4. Also, as tempting as Luck might be for Irsay, if he gets a king's ransom for Luck, it can help him stock up to make runs in Peyton's final few years. To me, that seems more likley than keeping Luck under wraps for a few years.
Seriously, give whoever has that pick whatever they want and solve this QB issue finally, sheesh!!! You want three #1s? You got 'em!!!
It also depends on what the team that would be in the #1 slot actually wants in the draft. If someone is sold on a Kalil or a Coples they may not want to trade back more than a spot or two.
Josh McDaniels is ****. Product of Tom Brady. Stephen Jackson hasn't rushed for 100 yards once this season and has been hurt. Their O-line can't pass protect for ****. Their WR are trash. And Lance Kendricks is a rookie TE learning to play in the NFL. Sorry, but his team sucks. And Bradford played great for a Rookie. He's struggled this year but he's not some POS QB. Kid can play. He needs some talent around him. I'd take him in a second if we can't land Luck.
I totally agree with you. I don't see the Rams drafting Luck either. Bradford is an excellent NFL QB, stuck on a lousy team at this time. If the Rams should get the first pick in the draft, I see them trading this pick for a pot full of picks, from a team who wants to draft Luck. I think the Rams would probably be able to get at least a first round draft pick in 2012 and 2013, plus a second round pick in 2012 from any team willing to trade up to get Luck. Some of the teams really desperate to get Luck, may be willing to increase their offer by agreeing to give up even more draft picks in 2012 and 2013. I see Bradford being a top tier QB in the NFL in the coming years. The Rams have so many needs that trading the first pick in the draft, if they do get it, would be the best thing for their organization over the long run.
Who wouldn't trade a 1st and two 2nds for Luck, especially when the other option is a 1st and a 2nd? What is one more 2nd round pick for Andrew Luck?
Henne has shown us what he has. Moving to another team will doubtfully have any effect on his play. IMO, we at the absolute worst will pick 3rd. The only 2 teams at the moment who might pick ahead of us are the Rams and Colts. To move up even those 2 spots I'd fully expect us to have to give up this and next years firsts and maybe 2 seconds for Luck. Make it an optional third first rounder as well, depending on how he does his rookie year. I'd happily pay that for him too. I'm sick of the unhappy carousel of crap we have at QB. It's time to make the move we need to because when will we have a better opportunity? If Luck will play here then full steam ahead! Do what the hell it takes to get him.
No. I want my very own franchise Quarterback. One we draft and one who holds up our jersey on draft day.
If we wind up with the #2 pick, and Luck goes #1 somehow (Rams either draft him or trade the pick), just take Landry Jones. There's a difference between securing your future and negotiating with terrorists.
It's going to cost a LOT more than that to move up for Luck. Think a top 5 pick in 2012, a 2nd and and 3rd in 2012 and at least a 1st and 3rd in 2013....and I'd do it. I don't want Bradford and I don't think the Rams want to deal him, even with the #1 pick. Remember, he was signed to his deal before the new rookie contract rules so he has been paid a boatload of money already. They will in my opinion want to flip the pick and build their franchise around the acquired picks. I'd basically give them whatever they want for the guy.
I'll give them almost anything for Luck. The gap between him and Jones is pretty big in my opinion. That said, there must be limitations to what we can surrender especially if we are moving from #2 to #1. It's one spot.
Are there? Let's the season play out. Luck's great no doubt, but again I feel like there's a Kelly and a Marino in this draft too.
If St. Louis gives up on Bradford in year two, they are one of the dumbest run organizations ever. That being said, this will all be figured out by season's end, so as another poster said why not let it play out? To those who would settle for Landry Jones, why? I just don't understand the love affair with him. I have seen him play a few times, and I just don't see what everyone else does. I just seem to think that NFL defenses are going to chew him up and spit him out. He has superior weapons to pass to, and whatever situation he lands in at the next level, he will be exposed.
