    Okay,

Bought the PS3 for the BluRay player primarily, but for the games as well.

Trying to get a connection online to update firmware and what not, but cant get the damn thing to connect.

I have a wired DSL connection. From my modem, I send the wire to a hub, not a router, and then split it to the 3 computers in my house. To set up the PS3, I simply unplugged a wire going to one of the computers, and connected the one for my PS3 that I had run from my TV to the hub.

I am trying with the automatic setup, but when it comes time to test the connection, I can't get an IP address, as it says "timed out while trying to get an IP address" or something like that, which is ultimately a FAILED attempt from the system.

I tried resetting my modem, unplugging it for 5 mins, yadda yadda yadda, and can't get the damned thing to work.

Oh, all the cables that go to the 3 computers, and have no issues with the internet connection, are Cat5 cables, and the one I've run from my PS3 to the hub is a Cat6. Not sure this makes a difference, but it may be usefulll info for the well educated here.

    Any help would be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure for the ps3 you would either need a router or a switch. I don't think a hub will work.

Ya, forgot to mention that I also tried running the cable directly to my modem, bypassing the hub, and it still doesn't work.

Are you on a static IP? You might have to manually assign the IP if there's no DHCP server being run by your ISP.

I'll try with a Cat5 cable, since that is the only one Im using now, maybe it will make a difference.

I'll have to figure this one out.

    Sounds simple. :tongue2:

I tried finding my IP, but keep getting a different number (DSL).

    Also, there are like 5 lines of numbers to put in;

The IP address, the DNS numbers (i have these from my ISP) but the others I have no clue of how to attain them.

In fact, the DNS #s are the only ones I do know.

Phone your ISP up. If it's anything like mine they lock your device to your connection. EVEN with a router.

For instance my 4 ports are locked up to 2 computers, a laptop and the xbox 360 and I put the PS3 on wireless. If I change any of those 4 wired ports around I would have to call my ISP and have them reset some thingy so it would all work again.

You may need an actual router in this case.

the router would assign an internal ip anyway, a static Ip would only apply to the router. try connecting your ps3 directly to your modem and set everything to auto detect. if it works, you know you have an issue with your router.

Happy to report that all I had to do was run a Cat5 cable.

Auto Detect did the rest, even with the HUB.

    Thanks for the help guys.
