Im playing GTA4 on 360, and boom, it shuts off, and the three red lights are flashing. So i say "oh ****" and goto the console and shut it down. then i wait a few moments, and turn it back on. it starts up, i start GTA4 again, and a few moments into the game, boom, it shuts down again, 3 red lights flashing. WTF is going on? Is this it? Am i screwed?
yes, you are indeed ****ed. Microsoft will replace it for free. It's only like a week turn around these days too
If you mean just proceeding as is? Probably yes it will, would send it in to get repaired. Once they repair it it shouldnt happen again, they have done a much better job on the new/repaired units to keep this from becoming the ongoing issue it was. Just be thankful its during the doldrums atm. Even though GTA4 is still fairly fresh, there isnt much new to worry about for a little. At least it wont happen the day you pop GoW2 into it
well i did some clean-up. wiped down the 360, removed the intercooler, unplugged the ac. plugged it back in without the intercooler(nyko), and it worked fine for the hour i played it thereafter. but you guys still think i may have issues in the future? i guess once this becomes pandemic, i'll send it in. but im not the 4 hour marathon guy i used to be, if this is indeed a heat issue.
Keep that intercooler 500 yards away from your console. That thing does more damage than help. For starters, it uses the 360's power supply to power its thing. That may be why your console just shuts down with the three red lights. Second, multiple fans running at different rotational speeds can cause air friction and turbulence. Finally, it is infamous for "melting" and ruining your console (as well as voiding your warranty!) I run my xbox without any type of intercooler, and it runs cooler than my PS3. I just have a small fan circulating cool air at my consoles.
I had the three rings of death and I just restarted it and haven't had any problems with it since. That was like 3 months ago too so you might be fine.
I remember a few months ago when Gamestop had a clearance sale... those bins were full of Intercoolers.
Why is everyone knocking the Intercooler? Ive got one and its never melted (as it is the new ones, EX models, have the connector made now from metal, NOT plastic like before when people would say it would melt) and my XBOX is still running fine and its from March 06. Hell, as it is I believe that the only reason its lasted this long is because of the Intercooler. Because Ive done some 8 hour marathons on this sucker so much that my SONY 60" XBR1 has fried 4 times in that span compared to the XBOX which keeps chugging along. I was thinking that I may want to take the Intercooler off so that it breaks down on PURPOSE before the warranty for the problem runs out. BTW SETH...bro...I had that happen to me with the older model Intercooler a few times and it was just that the power cord was not plugged in all the way. All I would do is take out the power cord and plug it back in making sure that thing was tight and as flush as possible (ie. it doesnt look loose or that it can be pushed in more) and problem solved. Granted I took back that Intercooler and replaced it with the newer EX model since it had the rear connector made out of metal AND it locks in place the power cord better.
Not true I have gotten it 3 times and no system failure. I just replug in all the wires. I got it all 3 times playing SR.
that's not true. It still takes almost 2-3 weeks. # days ground for them to ship you a box. You send it out the very same day, another 3 days ground. They have 10 business days to replace your unit with a refurb, and then you wait another 3 business days while they ship you your unit ground.
DUDE THE INTERCOOLER WILL RUIN YOUR CONSOLE! TRUST ME! I HAD ONE MELT 2 of MINE! I'm on my 3rd console now. My first refurb lasted about 4 months, and I don't play more than 20-24 hours a week. It doesnt matter what your intercooler is made of. The problem is that the intercooler uses the power adaptor from teh 360, and not a its own separate power. This takes away some of the power going to the 360s mobo, and ends up frying its parts on the mobo. The info is out there if you do some research. Of course I'm talking about the older 360 models.
The new ones have the new chips that should have corrected the heating problem, meaning they shouldn't ever need the intercooler anyways.
BRO! I am telling you I have done my research, I have some knowledge of computers and Im telling you that your blaming the actual MS PR bullcrap that was being spewed back in the day to avoid the fact that THEY are the ones who built a console with heating problems. Thats one of the reasons theyd blame the 360 for failure..."Oh yeah you've got an Intercooler yeah thats it! Sorry, we have to charge you." In the end, they had to admit it by giving the 3 yr warranty. You dont really think a product that is all over the place (CC,BB,Brandsmart,Walmart,Target etc. etc.) would be sold for so long, reviewed by so many people and be the ultimate problem with the 360? I am not arguing that there have been problems with the Intercooler here and there. It happens with any product. Here's a full review of the INTERCOOLER EX: http://gear.ign.com/articles/796/796951p1.html I love this part: "In our case, the review sample Intercooler is still docked to the 360 we tested it with, the only launch unit still functioning in the LA office, we might add."
It is pretty widely discussed by many gamers that the intercooler will do more harm than help for your console.
When was the last time you know of one sent? My cousin's died a few weeks ago. Once he actually got the box and shipped it off they had him a new one in two business days.
The only discussing I mainly see on the subject, which really trashes the product, is through message boards and such. I remember seeing one youtube video or something as well and maybe one third party site which wrote an article discussing the melting issue. Granted, like I said before, the product has had its bumps in the road. Not to mention that the Intercooler doesn't magically fix the real issue inside the console itself. But just like the article states, the newer models have upgraded the product. I am only defending it so much because for me, this thing has been a god send. I guarantee that my console would be fried to a crisp long ago if it were not for this device. Now, YRMV (your results may vary) so to each there own. But in my case, the console is still working after more than 2 years of steady operation on the crappy Xenon board with 90nm/90nm chips. So I cant say a bad thing about it. I have no extra fans blowing into and/or around it. My house temp. is a constant 75-76 degrees when I have it on so its not like I am freezing the house up. All I notice is that when the console is on, and the cooler is on, it is significantly cooler than when the thing is off it. Maybe its not the cooler and I picked up some demonized console that won't break until the warranty is expired and the demon will laugh at me...but I am not taking the risk and taking it off unless I have the funds to buy an Elite (which I will do once the chips are BOTH 65nm later this year).
FYI ... there's another ring of red that isn't actually the infamous red ring of death, but actually means your video cable isn't plugged all the way in. I had this happen to me a few months back and it freaked me.
Should I get NCAA football for PS3? No way my 360 will be back to me by the time the game comes out. But whichever system I get NCAA for I want to get Madden on it to. will Madden be as good on ps3 this year as 360?
