I was going to stay up late also but as soon a it hit 10 pm PST and I heard that Jason Brown will visit the Rams first, I called it a night. All the hype but it seems like it will be a bidding war and a lot of these free agents are looking for pay days. With the economy looking the way it is, can you blame them?

 

Kind of odd how only one of the major free agents is inked thus far. At least we know it's not just a Miami thing... it's league wise. Usually by now there is far more activity, but I'm guessing we're going to hear a lot more around noon. That's usually the next big update during day one of free agency.

Stuff will happen, just sometimes these things take time. I'd be happy with Brown, but I know we won't overpay which is a positive. If I see Goody resigned It'd also be good for the day.

I'd take a guess that the reason we didn't see a lot of "big name" midnight signings is partially due to claims we heard of "tampering" from last year. Teams don't want to risk a penalty due to talking to a guy before they're allowed to. I'd expect that honestly, Gibril Wilson is/was our big signing for the year.

 

To be fair, just cause we signed Smiley last year, doesn't mean we were gonna do the same thing this year.

We actually struck before midnight by signing Gibril Wilson (and Yeremiah and Crowder and Carey). Would you have been happier if we waited 6 hours to sign Wilson?

look at it this way, Miami was way ahead of midnite last night in signing G Wilson, and got deals done with Bell, Carey, and Crowder.

I would suggest two things:

It all depends on how much money Haynesworth is due this year.

The contract can be one biiiiiiillion dollars. But as long as the prorated signing bonus (total signing bonus divided by length of contract) + 2009 base salary puts them under, they're fine.

Odds are Haynesworth's base salary for this season is pretty low (say $1 million). If his signing bonus was indeed $41 million (and it probably isn't) and the contract is 7 years, his 2009 cap number would be $6.86 million.

What happens in subsequent years is another story. But many times these big contracts are manageable for the teams in the early years.

One thing I've learned about our current regime is to pay no attention to the rumor mill. Carey was going to command too much on the open market to keep. Crowder was completely out of the trifecta's plans. Gibril Wilson: SURPRISE! But now that we've got him, Bell's probably gone. And a crack squad of ex-special-forces personnel (code name: Tuna Helpers) would spirit Brown out of Baltimore at 12:01 AM, tie him to a chair and shove cash down his throat until he signed with us.
If anyone tells you they know what Parcells & company will do next, feel free to laugh in their face.

But our fearless leaders do keep it interesting.

Nothing happened probably cause we were all expecting some big signings at the strike of midnight.Better to wake up and be surprised, like the G.Wilson signing.:up:

 

This is not a bad thing. This is actually really good. We're doing things the right way finally. We're building through the draft. We're not crippling our future by overpaying for vets whom aren't getting any younger. You sign whatever free agents are out there to act as a sort of patchwork until you have time to draft your own guys. Haven't we learned yet, that signing high priced, big name FAs, doesn't necessarily translate into wins. Where has it got the Redskins? Look at the Steelers, whom just won the Superbowl, they don't do that. The Pats during their heyday didn't do that. A couple of guys here and there is o.k. to help bring things together and add some vet leadership.

We addressed the Safety position, which was a serious weakness and one of the main problems with our secondary, IMO. The one FA guy I really wanted was Brown from the Ravens, but maybe they have another plan in mind. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

As fans we like to hear about these signings and get some kind of instant gratification, but it's not the way to build things correctly, IMO. We should get our gratification from seeing this regime turn around a 1-15 team into a 11-5 team in one year...one off-season. I actually enjoy watching some of these teams going nuts and clutching at straws with of these signings. It just increases my respect for Parcells and Co.

This makes me think of a saying about two bulls:
