If Ross keeps Ireland and Philbin in place, what is the blueprint for success?

Waiting out another year of the same until both are fired?
I don't think Philbin is going to hold any of his staff accountable.RoninFin4, unifiedtheory and Unlucky 13 like this. -
Nothing is ever going to change if Ireland remains the GM. He picks or signs fairly mediocre talent for the most part and that is what he has done for the past six years. So as the Bills and Jets and Patriots continue to select better talent in the draft, the Dolphins will just continue to fall further behind in the division if Ireland remains the GM.
As far as Philbin is concerned. I think he showed the past two weeks that he isn't capable of getting the job done when the pressure to make the playoffs is greatest. His team simply was out coached and ill prepared for the games against the Bills and Jets. He needs to go, but I don't know if Ross will make the move to get rid of him.PhinFan1968, 2socks and Aquafin like this. -

Well I think Mike Sherman needs to go before Ireland needs to go. The blueprint for success starts with a better offensive line and a new offense.
-
But to answer seriously if Ireland and Philbin are kept.
Sherman would have to be gone, IMO. Because it looks like the entire offense was overmatched and out game planned far too often. It seems as if we rarely countered the opposing teams strengths (Buffalo really stands out with this).
So, we would need to find an offensive coach that will gameplan to the opposing teams, and that has had a history of success in coordinating an offense that can successfully run the football. Oh, and preferably a coach that runs a similar offensive scheme to make the transition for Tannehill and the rest of the offense easier. I'm sure this will be a pre-requisite for Philbin thoughCoral Reefer likes this. -

what are the chances that we can get rid of these buttclowns . Mike Sherman must go and Philbin too. we are not progressing and next year we have a tougher schedule if I am not mistaken.
-
The defensive line also played poorly in many games this year and they provided no pressure at all on the Qb's the past two weeks.
At the rate the defense is regressing. By the time the Dolphins get a decent offense, the defense will be one of the worst in the NFL.LI phinfan likes this. -
i just want to have fun watching the dolphins play we had so many low scoring slug fest this year its boring *** football that is nail biting slow paced. The steelers game was i think the only game were i was like holy crap this game is amazing to watch.

7-9 maybe 8-8

Fire Jim Turner OL coach and both coordinators. Establish a new base 3-4 hybrid defense and demote Ellerbe and Wheeler to ST's and backup roles.
Acquire smarter players with some football instincts.
Trade Pouncey for a late 1st and 3rd and rebuild the OL with high character guys like Veldheer,Slauson and Asamoah. Draft Cameron Erving and see a miraculous new running game evolve.
Trade Daniel Thomas and draft Lache Seastrunk or acquire Toby Gerhart.
I could go on all day. -
It is possible that the linebackers we had made our Db's and line better by their play. They are replaced, I believe at Philbin's request, and we instantly regressed as a defense as a result. Ireland just didn't decide to replace these players because he had nothing better to do. Coach asked him to do it.
I believe it was the coaching because Dansby is up for defensive player of the year and Burnett is playing well. The problem is Philbin is a$$ backwards. He is trying to fit the scheme with players, not molding the scheme to the strength of our players. He is unable to fine tune and adjust to get the desired results especially during game time. This leaves us looking weak in terms of personal, when the fact is we are weak in the coaching category and something has to give. -

The Dolphins were disappointing this year but the last two games were the ultimate disappointment and an embarrassment.

I think the biggest issue with this season was the performance of Mike Sherman. From the predictable play design, the predictable game plans, the go go fiasco, the stubborn insistence to force running plays the line could not block, the lack of a screen game to slow down the pass rush, dropping back and pass 40 times with an overmatched line, the refusal to utilize Tannehill's athleticism, the refusal to call a QB sneak on 3rd/4th and short, the refusal to shift his personnel and the refusal to up the tempo (which was the only time the offense was deadly).
Just a very, very dismal performance. This couldn't have come at a better time with multiple top OC candidates being available.Rocky Raccoon likes this. -
I also don't think there is any way in hell that nothing changes.
If Ross decides to stay the course with BOTH Ireland and Philbin, then he can expect record low ticket sales and attendances at 2014 games. Season Ticket sales for certain will hit record lows and by a wide margin I assume.
These past two games took the wind out of the sails for this fanbase IMO. And I think Ross knows this. It's going to take some high profile hiring for him to win back this fanbase at least for ticket sales. -

You don't trade a Pro Bowl center. Although, I'd move him to guard and sign Alex Mack. We can't afford to trade our only decent offensive lineman, you'd be creating holes instead of filling them.
You won't get a thing for Daniel Thomas via trade. Keep him, let him compete with two running backs we bring in and Lamar Miller.
On topic:
I'd fire everyone. Fire Ireland, Philbin, Turner, Coyle, Taylor and Sherman tomorrow morning. Let the new GM decide on the balance of the staff. -
-
Ideas - look to see what can be done about our mediocre linebackers, trades etc. Maybe some team will give us a late round pick for them... I don't know it's wishful thinking.
In the draft, if Ebron isn't there where we pick, go offensive linemen in the first two rounds. Hopefully Ireland isn't here to make the picks because he always tries to outsmart everyone and ends up with egg on his face. Still draft a quarterback in day 2, Tannehill needs competition, he has to be shown that improvement MUST happen, 3rd year next year we need to know next year if he's a playoff contending quarterback. If we don't make the playoffs next year his tenure has to end, period. I don't want to go all five years with the guy just to find out he's nothing (like St. Louis had to find out with Bradford, what a waste of time).
Look for veteran offensive linemen in free agency. Look for available playmaking tight ends. Look for a power back.
Get Gibson and Hartline healthy, perhaps Keller comes back.
I don't like Wallace but you guys have to face the reality, his contract is horrendous and unmovable. We have to hope for better results next year. He's a Dolphin for the next two years. -
If Ireland is retained after all this, we hunker down and wait for the next owner after Ross.
-

I think we are at a critical time for our offense and for Tannehill in particular. If we retain the new Trifecta (Sherman, Turner, Taylor) I think we'll have seen the extent of Tannehill's development.
We have a bonafide "QB whisperer" available in Kubiak and we should open up the purse strings to go get him. Not to mention he's usually had a strong zone based running game.
This offense is not as far along as it should be and I place the blame on the aforementioned. To move forward and reach our offensive potential, all three need to be replaced.
The question is...does Philbin have the stones to do it? -
Kubiak is going to get another head coaching job... After Black Monday he will be on top of many lists.... Even college teams will be contacting him. I think his health will definitely factor in whether he wants to be a head coach or not.

Ireland will be fired, the issue here is will Ross spare us fans as well as the roganization from more and more blunders by cutting him now, or will we have to go for years as we have been going.

I love that everything comes down on Sherman. He sucks, don't get me wrong, but this is Philbin's team. Philbin is such an offensive genius from Green Bay. If he's such a good offensive mind, then why the hell didn't he change things up? He's the HEAD COACH. Not Sherman. Philbin is the head coach. I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of being an NFL coach, but I do know this: If I'm the coach and my job is on the line and things aren't working out, mentor be damned, things have to change. And maybe Philbin did step up. And if that's the case, he's terrible. Also, the fact that Bryant McKinnie, who was here all of 6 weeks and brought up the snap count to the coaching staff is ludicrous.
-
to me the only thing that changed from the Sparano era to the Philbin era is we have a good not great defense and where we had a good running game with a poor passing game under sparano we now have a good or decent passing game with a poor running game. basically the same team in terms of effectiveness
