...he will be the first Dolphins quarterback to throw for over 4,000 yards in a season since Dan Marino in 1994. And if he averages a TD pass per game for the remainder of the year, he will be the first QB to throw for more than 20 TD's in a season since Marino in 1998 (Jay Fiedler threw for exactly 20 TDs in 2001, but never more).
He is currently averaging 260 yards passing and about 1 1/2 TDs per game, so both milestones are very achievable.
Not too shabby for the sophomore, eh?
***UPDATED AFTER PATRIOTS GAME***
Ryan now has 3,627 yards passing and 23 TDs. If the season ended today, I think it would have to be considered a successful one in terms of his individual stats. But lucky for us, he has two more games to add to his numbers.
If Ryan can average 186.5 yards passing over the next two games, he will eclipse 4,000 ont he season and will be the only Miami QB to do that other than Dan Marino. He is currently averaging 259 yards passing per game, so he should have no trouble reaching this.
If he continues to average 259 per, he will finish the season with 4,145 yards passing, good enough for fourth all-time for a Dolphins single season QB (Marino had seasons of 1: 5,084, 2: 4,746 and 3: 4,434 for the too three slots)
He is also now on pace for 26 touchdown passes whichever old be the most since Dan Marino in 1994 (30).
And his stats for December?
3 games, 73 completions on 113 attempts (64.6%) for 843 yards (281/game) with 8 TDs versus 2 INTs.
If he keeps at THAT pace, he will have an outside shot of 4,200 yards and 28 TDs

Very encouraging considering the protection situation and lack of reliable supporting running game.
He's got issues, no doubt, and many things to work, however his issues are more prevalent because he is being forced to do more than he is currently ready. He should not have been placed in this situation so young in his career. His position would see many a good veteran QB struggle too.DPlus47, Frumundah Finnatic, Colorado Dolfan and 3 others like this. -

Yeah I have no doubt Ryan will continue to progress. In all honesty aside from Wallace our offense due to injury is mainly the same as last season.
Ryan still has no real red zone targets or power running game to work with inside the 20. Yet he has progressed in seemingly every way.DPlus47 likes this. -

If Ryan can keep up his averages for the rest of the season, it'll easily be the best season by a Miami QB since 1994, and arguably the 5th or 6th best in team history. He's far from a finished product, but as raw as he was and behind our gross OL, you'd be crazy not to keep him and see how much better he can get.
-
That being said... Tannehill is leavign some plays out there, making some mistakes, but how anyone cant be encouraged with the potential this kid still has to grow, with a better OL, is just beyond me. He's making some ridiculous throws out there every week. He's making some poor ones too. I think its obvious he has all the tools. I think we need to remember still... he's raw. He's clearly grown from last year... I think we need to be a bit more patient still. Im excited about his future, and I hope its here, for quite some time still.DolfanTom likes this. -
wow, 20 Td's...where have I heard that one?
:shifty:
Said, enjoy THill folks, a running game and BLine and Wallace are housing long Td passes -
Tannehill is making a lot his good (and bad) throws on the run or frankly just not in the pocket. Absolutely inexcusable. No QB should have to fight that hard on every snap to get away from the pass rush. And now that he is doing well despite those holes in the offensive, some people think he is holding this team back? This team is holding him back.
With all the problems with this team, and franchise, OL, play-calling, heck special teams!...to even talk Tannehill at this point would be in glaring ignorance to the reality of the situation.Frumundah Finnatic and Unlucky 13 like this. -
His pocket management has been much better the past two weeks.

Best QB season since 1994? Hmm I was 7. My son is now 5.....thats a things of beauty.

I think Pennington's 2008 was the best single season. Tannehills is second best IMO

That said, a lot our success that season came from the shock and awe that was the wildcat. Regardless Chad definitely earned his cheque that year. And for that reason my Pennington jersey will be worn when we make the playoffs again. -

Doug Martin was a first round pick and Bobby Rainey seems capable. As for a running back, I'd trade a 5th for Mike James.

And say what you want....
But ....I feel pretty confident we can move the ball up and down the field when we want, against pretty much anyone. Now...just gotta get better at actually getting in the end zone... -

I'm excited about Tanny. I think he is awesome off the field (pressers and stuff) and shows good mental toughness on the field. Great physical tools. Not sure about the QB coach, don't know enough to know. -
A great example of that is the Wallace TD today, Tanny see's the obvious heavy blitz coming, throws it quickly to Wallace in the face of the pressure, Wallace is able to run by/through (whatever you want to call it) a poor tackling attempt by Milliner for the TD.
For him not to be shellshocked after the way this OL protected him earlier this year... its impressive in itself IMO. He stands in there, in pressure so much and delivers otherwise good throws a majority of the time, you havae to like that.
If we can protect him, I have that same confidence. Haven't had that in a Miami QB in a while.
It's the inconsistency I still worry about, but that's not just Ryan, its the entire team and staff IMO.cuchulainn likes this. -

Tannehill has shown he can be a very good QB in this league, but we're not doing him any favors with the design of the offense.
We need to stop forcing him into a predetermined mold and start playing to his strengths, and avoiding his weaknesses...the first of which is his deep ball. Ryan Tannehill simply does not throw a good deep ball. I've seen the stats, and I've read all the breakdowns, but his deep throws just don't pass the eyeball test, and there are more excuses on his behalf than there are accurate throws beyond 30 yards. His ability to accurately judge distance and timing on a deep throw is poor, and I'm not sure that is going to get better.
Now, that's not to say he isn't good, and can't be great. He is, and he can be...with a better design.
For now though, the most glaring problem is that Mike Wallace and Ryan Tannehill just don't really fit together. Sure they can make it work on occasion, but their pairing is never going to be a strength for this team, and as such we should not invest so heavily in it going forward. In order for Tannehill to reach his full potential, he needs quick, YAC guys (including more pass-catching talent out of the backfield) and taller, physical, possession receivers. Assuming we spend the majority of our resources this year rebuilding the offensive line, we should follow up within 2 years by redesigning the receiving corps to play toward Tannehill's biggest assets which are mobility and accuracy outside the pocket, and then just hope his pocket awareness continues to improve.
I don't think Tannehill is ever going to be a quick strike guy, but he absolutely can carve teams up with the right talent around him.Unlucky 13 likes this. -

Apparently you haven't read the game day threads, according to most he should be benched for Matt Moore...

We had Ricky and Ronnie. Short yardage and red zone was the least of our offense's problems.Unlucky 13 likes this.
