And the reason he doesn't is bc he's a diva too.

    They all like the attention.

Cris Collinsworth said that he would have carried the pads and used it as motivation to take his job. He relayed a story about when he was a rookie he was drafted in the 2nd and another Reciever was taken in the 1st. First day of camp the first round pick pulls up in his new Mercedes and Collinsworth pulled up next to him in his old Bobcat. So he wasn't going to be humbled or intimidated by anyone and he used it as motivation to win the starting job over this guy.

anyone think that roy williams might be motivated this year and does it matter lol. i'm just wondering because if dez wins the starting job, which he should, maybe they get rid of roy. is he worth a roll of the dice?

i like bringing in a few of those guys every offseason. they produce a few players periodically. The QBs have died since Warren Moon however.

I love it, people are setting up on both sides of the camp. I think Adam Schefter re-tweeted that Jim Miller said something like Dez Bryant would have carried Michael Irvin's pads because Irvin earned it. Roy Williams? No way.

I think it's important to some veterans, not important to others, and either way the fans are likely to NOT understand what a big deal it is (or isn't).

For one thing we have no idea how the Cowboys locker room is viewing it. For all we know they all hate Roy Williams and they're enthused that Dez stood up to him and said he's not going to take his sh-t.

That was the player I was thinking of. Bowens was our #1 pick that year, 20th overall. Some vet tried to haze him and he said "no, I'm not doing it". Then he went on to win the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

    Eh, ya hoser.

Nah Roy Williams is like the guy who skipped class, didn't do his homework all semester, now is trying to cram all night to try and pass the end of grade test.

Meaning he doesn't put in the work it takes to be great, now in yr 7 he finds himself?

I'd rather take a shot on Roberto Wallace or J Pruitt or whomever, who has the physical tools and is hungry, over a guy who has the tools, but won't work.

Dude should have been Romo's caddy all summer before he is buried alive on the bench or released.

I understand how many here are defending Bryant and commenting about how silly this is. It is silly but apparently it is an accepted part of NFL culture and means quite a lot to the established players. I just don't think Bryant understands what a powder keg this/he is. All he had to do was conform and it stays out of the media, message boards, newspapers, radio and TV. Just another needless story involving Dez Bryant. I wonder when the next one is coming?

Its disappointing that something like this over some pads is blown way out of proportion. He doesn't have to do it, tradition or not. The guy even said he meant no disrespect. He came to camp early, had extra sessions throwing the ball with Romo, even followed Romo to a quarterback only area so he could throw some footballs with him. He does one little thing, which is not even that big IMO and its blown way out of proportion. If this was someone other than Dez Bryant, I doubt they'd be labeled a diva.

    Just my two cents.

actually, I did want to draft bryant based on what I'd seen him do on the field....but after seeing him work his way into the middle of two newspaper headlines before taking so much as a single snap in training camp, I'm getting the feeling we dodged a bullett. it's going to be like this every year, I fear.

This is the same dude who told friends that his strategy for dealing with interview questions about his season ending suspension was to "act like my phone was losing it's signal".

He did that 3 times on ESPN radio when they tried to interview him

Dude ran amazingly fast for wearing pampers.

lol. dez bryant has now changed his mind apparently. says he didnt know this was what rookies did. something tells me a little bird explained the mysteries of life in the NFL to him. he aslo said he didnt know this was a tradition lol. anyways like always, he's changed his attitude and is now saying all the right things

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AreLAn7.cuKprM9_pVvYWhBDubYF?slug=ap-cowboys-dezbryant

Dallas Cowboys rookie receiver Dez Bryant(notes) said he never expected his refusal to carry Roy Williams’ shoulder pads to become such an big deal.

The first-round pick also said he didn’t know that rookies carrying the pads of veterans after practice was a long-standing ritual.

“I told Roy this, I said if that situation was going to turn out that big, he could have walked in with his tights on,” Bryant said after the team’s first of two practices Tuesday. “I would have took his shoulder pads, his pants, his helmet, his socks, his shoes. I would have took everything. But you know what, that’s not even an issue.”

Saying he would do this if he was a free agent, is evidence of the fact he knows this is something rookies do. I was rooting for him to succeed. Now I may be leaning the other way. He's not a dolphin so I can make a mountain out of this molehill. That's just classless and disrespectful to all the Vets on the team.
