Jets’ Players Would Welcome Burress’ Arrival

New York Jets team owner Woody Johnson isn’t the only one not opposed to the possibility of signing troubled wide receiver Plaxico Burress.

As Burress attempts to settle a pending gun charge stemming from accidentally shooting himself in the leg last November at a Manhattan nightclub, the Jets’ players sound receptive to adding him to the roster, according to Bob Glauber of Newsday.

“I would welcome him,” Jets wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery said. “I know a lot of guys would welcome him because they know what kind of player he is. He’s a good guy. I enjoy watching him play. …

“Obviously, the league is coming down on guys, even if you plead or anything like that. But I would monitor that situation. He’s a great player.”

Meanwhile, veteran Jets offensive guard Alan Faneca seconded the notion about potentially acquiring Burress.

Faneca got to know the former Michigan State star when they were both playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers prior to Burress signing with the New York Giants.

“I have good memories of Plax,” Faneca said. “You know who he is and what he’s about and what he puts together on the field.”

In nine starts last season, Burress caught 35 passes for 454 yards and four touchdowns.

Entering his 10th NFL season, Burress has registered 505 career receptions for 7,845 yards and 55 touchdowns.
