I just hope he doesn't read Lebron's "How to Close out the Championship"

Yeah...the more I hear or read about Philbin the more I am glad he is our coach.

I'll like Joe Philbin when I see the product he puts on the field.
No offense to your thread but we've seen coaches come through here saying all the right things and carrying a great resume before.

Quote of the offseason, from Ireland, he says to his coach after he keeps hearing what a great guy he is, " I sure hope you can coach"...lol

I too am going to have to wait and see. I remember all the excitement when Bill Parcells came in...how posters in this forum has signatures made with "The Soprano's" logo to fit Tony Sparano...how everyone was excited with Cam Cameron came in from San Diego with his high powered offense...and ultimately at the end of the season(s), everyone was like an unruly mob with torches and pitchforks hunting Frankenstein's monster.
It's great to be excited and hopeful for a brighter tomorrow, but still need to keep it real just in case our hearts are crushed yet again. -
I'm not quite sure how to feel about this. I certainly won't knock Joe for it, but reading motivational books by other coaches seems more of a move that someone who aspired to be a head coach or NFL coach might do, not someone who has already attained the rank. By this time I would hope Joe wouldn't have much to learn from a book that I'm guessing was probably written geared more towards the general public. Like I said, not knocking him for it. I've never read the book and maybe there's some great stuff in there that translates to all sports. I'm just not going to get warm and tingly. I DO get warm and tingly when I hear him talk about QB rating differential though...

Let's be honest. With our fan base, winning doesn't even turn heads. It buys you 1 year. Most turned on Tony Sparano quicker than anything I've seen. And he won their first division in a decade. So, everyone likes Joe now, but it will take sustained success maybe to keep this guy well liked.

What was disappointing to me was that, like Kobe or not, he is the principle reason Wade has a gold medal. Kobe - not Wade or LeBron, was the go to man in the gold medal game against Spain and he was uber-clutch (the anti-Lebron). -

Good ole Dolphins fans. Now we are analyzing WHAT book Joe is reading, WHEN he is reading it, and WHY he decided to read this particular book. Does it ever stop? I remember when there was a thread about the cutoff windbreaker Tony Sparano used to wear. How odd that a football coach, who coaches football, reads a book about football. Something is afoot and I mean to find out what!
And I see no issues with optimism. We are the fanbase, we are supposed to be optimistic. It's dang ner our job to be optimistic and stick with the team. Redskins fans here in DC honestly think they are going to the Superbowl every year. They win one game and its "Whup....we going to the chip!" Dolphins fans lose one game and we start mocking up drafts. I"m not a coach.....I don't need to deal with reality. I'm a fan....I love my team and every season I want to be optimistic in their prospects even if it is fools gold. I mean.....did anyone ever think that the next leap was going to be the leap home for Sam? Or did we think Gilligan was actually going to get off the island?! No! That would kill the show...but we hoped and remained optimistic and both shows ended up being awesome. Enjoy being fans folks. I'm just waiting on the pitchforks to come out about Joe rocking the "bald on top" aka the "Yugoslav" haircut. -

I certainly have no problem with Philbin at this point. I just want to actually see how effective he is as a head coach before I jump on or off his band wagon. He appears intelligent and seems to know what he wants to accomplish as the Dolphins head coach, but since he has never been a head coach before at any level, we will just have to wait and see how he functions when it is up to him to make the key decisions during the heat of the game.
It appears that many fans have forgotten that he didn't call the offensive plays for the Packers during the games. He was in the coaching box upstairs, while the head coach of the Packers called all the offensive plays. The reality is that he could turn out to be a very good head coach in the NFL, or he could end up being the Dolphins next, Cam Cameron. I really could care less what books he reads. I only care whether or not he can be an effective head coach for the Dolphins. -

You mean the same D-Wade that had 27 points to Kobe Bryants 20 points? The same D-Wade that drained a 3 pointer to put Miami up 111-104? Or are you just being a tad biased towards Kobe because all he really did was convert a 4 point play. Sure it was clutch but the Wade 3 pointer put the game out of reach and was just as clutch.
Wades statistics were better than Kobe's for the entire Olympic games, including the gold medal game -
Kobe made a nice 4 point play but Wade was the man that game -

Or it could be that he's never read that book, as you suggested and is looking to continue to broaden his horizon's or it could be that, as you said he's searching for more because he's uncertain about himself and his abilities...I don't think this is at all an uncommon sighting...
I also think being uncomfortable about his ability because he was reading that particular book on a flight home is a bit overboard... -
Under the microscope in the offseason. What will they say if he is reading Playboy, Hustler or Mad Magazine? I like the hire but just want the draft to get here, camps to start and see what he puts together on the field.
