Just a general question. Are you a specific kind of Pagan or is there a religion that exists that just calls itself Pagan?

Hey Pagan, have you ever read the Dies the Fire series by SM Stirling? I only mention it because there is a major wiccan element in the books.

    Most people call it Halloween.

No bro...never even heard of it. I'll look into it though.

    I don't think you're hating bro.

The Winter Solstice is something everyone's heard of before...it's called Yule and it's on December 21st usually.

With a ritual...either solitary or with a coven if you belong to one. Very similar to old May Day celebrations. Most of those were only thinly disguised Pagan rituals.

There's usually a bonfire...and the wrapping of the Maypole. All symbolic things to mark the union of the God & Goddess.

I honestly do not know anything about Wiccan. I assume that it is a bunch of "covens" and each one pretty much operates differently

How exactly does Wiccan break down? Are there many different types?

    Happy Beltane!

Well first of all bro the faith itself is called "Wicca". Followers are "Wiccan".

You can either be part of a coven - which my wife is - or what's called a solitaire, which I am. There are many different types of Wicca, called Traditions. The most popular one being Gardenian Wicca.

I more closely follow the path of my ancestors in Italy, the Strega...but I don't adhere strictly to it, which would classify me as an Eclectic.

It sounds more complicated than it really is.

    I don't mind bro.

You don't just show up. Usually you approach someone in the Coven. If they accept your approach, then you join them for awhile and learn the ways of the Craft and the Coven's ways. You are then initiated into the Coven in a ceremony, and must continue your education for a year and a day, after which you become a first level Witch.

Somewhat different Padre. Our holidays were pretty much all borrowed by other faiths and the days changed, but they're all pretty close to the original. Ostara was changed to Easter, Samhain was changed to Halloween, Yule was changed to Christmas, etc. etc.

Not to hijack your holiday thread but I would differ with you on "borrowed". One of the principals of Christian missionaries (and as I understand it Islamic ones as well), was to reinterpret the holiday. Winter Solstice was the time of returning light and Christians applied the sense of Jesus as the light coming into the world and used the holiday to explain their theology. We call it meeting people where they are at. The spring or vernal equinox is observed in many, many cultures as a time of new birth. Each faith takes folks where they are and re-interprets the experiance to tell their story.

no dis-respect intended but it seems you are splitting hairs here. slight the difference borrowed and re-interpreted to me. basically, if i am reading correctly, early Christians applied Christian values to existing traditions to help explain their story.

or,to be more acceptable to those being converted perhaps?

Bro...why don't you look up some of the stories on Christian websites as to the origin of the Christmas tree - a Pagan tradition called the Yule tree - and see how there's no mention whatsoever of its Pagan origins, just a new story of how it symbolized their beliefs.

That's not borrowing or re-interpreting, but out and out stealing.

But this thread wasn't about that. ;)
That's the main reason bro. During mass conversions, it was easier to get Pagans (aside from killing those who wouldn't convert) to convert by making all the holidays similar to theirs.

Anyway, like I said this thread wasn't about that....nor really was it intended to be a lesson in Wiccan beliefs.

I just wanted to wish any other Pagans on the board a Happy holiday. :)

I agree with you somewhat Pagan, except for one point, Easter was Ishtar, in fact if one looks at A Concordance, "Easter" is translated from "Ishtar" the Middle Eastern deity.

Not that it would keep a later generation from using your Ostarra...

Anywho, are there any celestal events involved with this celebration?

Not on the Sabbat itself, but the following day the first quarter new moon is entering Aries. Other than that, pretty quiet celestially.

As for Ostara, I was talking about the traditions. Colored eggs...baskets, etc. etc.
