Good morning to all... and welcome to another worthless dribble from your fellow fan... Though as hard as it seems some stats (yes we all know that we can find them to show a point), on Offensive scoring vs TOP can produce a data point that can be used be the observer. I have used this instead of Points per Game, or Points per Play... I know, I know, nothing new to tell, but since I spent the time on it I will let you have it... This OS vs TOP is simple, divide TOP into Points Scored which = Points per Minute (Points Scored / TOP = PPM)... Currently this year this Offense Efficiency has a combined average of 0.57 Points per Minute per game, and it went up this past game from a previous 0.51 PPM... What was this past game, if you asked? Well it was 1.25 PPM... So looking back into the Last 10 Years of teams who made the Post Season, I took this task to look at their Offesnive numbers... From the 12 PS team group, I will post the year, followed by the Team Minimun Point per Minute, the Team with the Average Point per Minute, and the Team with the Maximun Point per Minute. At lastly, you will see what the Dolphins Offensive Point per Minute was that Season... 2010- Pit (0.66), Balt (0.84), GB (1.1), MIA (0.55)... 2009- Cinci (0.60), Ariz (0.78), NO (1.0), MIA (0.70)... 2008- Pit (0.68), Indi-Ten (0.81), SD (0.94), MIA (0.70)... 2007- Ten (0.59), Sea (0.82), NE (1.1), MIA (0.58)... 2006- Jets (0.64), NE (0.75), SD (0.96), MIA (0.54)... 2005- Chi (0.56), Pit (0.76), Sea (0.94), MIA (0.74)... 2004- STL (0.62), Sea (0.80), Indi (1.1), MIA (0.55)... 2003- Dal (0.59), Sea (0.80), Indi (1.1), MIA (0.65)... 2002- NYG (0.63), Atl (0.76), Oak (0.88), MIA (0.76)... 2001- TB (0.63), NE (0.75), STL (0.98), MIA (0.72)... As you can see the Dolphins made it twice into the Post Season in the last decade, but they were Offensively efficiently in 4 other Seasons in comparison with those Post Season groups... I am with the majority that a good to great QB as a starter will improve the data so that it will be able to absorb most other issues on the team...
So bottom line: Get to .7 and youre likely a playoff team. get to .75 PPM and youre probably a SB contender unless your D really stinks
Thanks Boink... but you have to watch out for your ST's, they also can put a damper on your chances... Here are your SB contenders for the last 10 years... 2010-Pit (0.66), GB (1.1)... 2009-Indi (0.93), NO (1.0)... 2008-Ariz (0.89), Pit (0.68)... 2007-NE (1.1), NYG (0.73)... 2006-Chi (0.86), Indi (0.89)... 2005-Sea (0.94), Pit (0.76)... 2004-Phi (0.83), NE (0.88)... 2003-Car (0.74), NE (0.88)... 2002-Oak (0.88), TB (0.68)... 2001-STL (0.98), NE (0.75)... Seems like 50-50 when it comes to SB winners being the highest of the two in scoring efficiency...
I love stats. Nice work. I am not quite sure what to make out of this without seeing how playoff teams compare to non-playoff teams. I am guessing the biggest indicator of playoff teams vs non-playoff teams would be the discrepancy between points-per-minute and defensive points-per-minute for each team?
Yes Adam, you could look to see the performance of the D... but one thing for sure, teams like Pit and NYG, they probably would never have won in the PS if their Defense were not tops... forgot to add the Jets in the last 2 years... In 2010 they Jets D allowed 0.68 points per minute... In 2009, they allowed 0.51 points per minute...
Steve, all I can tell you, this is scoring efficiency on the Offense only... This is based on the TOP and points scored...
