The Dolphins received some good news on running back De’Von Achane after the rookie suffered an injury during the second preseason game.

Via multiple reporters, head coach Mike McDaniel said in his Monday press conference that Achane is week-to-week with his shoulder injury. While a defensive lineman fell on Achane, he avoided serious injury.

A third-round pick out of Texas A&M, Achane has rushed for 52 yards on 15 carries in two preseason games. He’s also caught four passes for 41 yards.

McDaniel also confirmed that quarterback Mike White is in concussion protocol and will be out for the final preseason game. McDaniel noted some on his staff found “irregularities” with White to get him placed in the protocol.

The club will re-sign quarterback James Blackmon to have three available signal-callers this week, McDaniel said.

Tight end Eric Saubert and guard Robert Jones also suffered injuries and are in rehab processes that could take more than a week or two.

    Mike White should consider retirement.

    Dolphins re-sign Blackman:

One player that has had a rollercoaster of an offseason is former Florida State quarterback James Blackman, who spent the first four years of his college career under center in Tallahassee. Blackman went undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft but quickly signed with the Miami Dolphins and participated in their Rookie Training Camp and a Mandatory Mini-Camp for a chance to pick up a spot behind Tua Tagovailoa, Mike White, and Skylar Thompson.

In early August, the Dolphins and Blackman parted ways after the surprising announcement that he would not make the 53-man roster, leaving the rookie quarterback empty-handed as he searched for a new home. Following an injury to Mike White over the weekend, Miami has reversed. On Monday, head coach Mike McDaniel confirmed the team plans to re-sign Blackman to its preseason roster.

The "back and forth" nature of Blackman's NFL career shouldn't be surprising for those who have followed him from his days dating back to Florida State. Then-head coach Jimbo Fisher recruited Blackman and he quickly went through a whirlwind of instability, including coaching staff changes. During his time under Taggart, he was part of a quarterback carousel battling for reps against Alex Hornibrook and Jordan Travis.

James Blackman tied for 10th in program history with 43 touchdown passes as a Seminole and threw 5,445 yards during his time in Tallahassee which is impressive given that he played behind arguably one of the worst power-5 offensive lines for a program undergoing three different head coaching changes. Blackman finished his fifth and sixth seasons at Arkansas State before signing with the Dolphins.

So, if I'm taking notes... Skylar got pulled from the game for evaluation after a DL landed on him. He was checked out in the tent and deemed to be okay. Meanwhile, Mike White was subbed in for him and either got concussed in the stretch or was concussed previously and exposed to further harm? We were close to either having Tua return or inserting a non-QB to finish the game?

Coach said we're going to give reps to James Blackmon and he'll be this week's third QB.

    Very interesting...

Maybe they could have canceled the rest of the game like the Patriots did against the Packers when their guy got hurt.

Or just let Tua hand off until the game was over.

Cut white asap he’s not going to be any better than skylar who already has shown promise and knows the system. If we lose tua it doesn’t matter we are not competing for playoffs in this division.

Take whatever cash you save from cutting / trading him and get anyone who can play LT worth a **** because we’re going to be missing alot of playtime this year!

The biggest news? Rookie cornerback Cam Smith practiced without the red non-contact jersey and got his heaviest workload since hurting his shoulder in the preseason opener 10 days ago.

Smith told reporters that not only is he on track to play in Week 1, he could potentially see the field Saturday in Miami’s preseason finale against the Jaguars. “I felt good today,” Smith said. “Really first time back getting into contact, jamming, getting on the sled, stuff like that. It felt good today. I’m not promising anything. But it felt good today.”

    Other injury tidbits:

    • The Dolphins will be without De’Von Achane for some time but did get back two other members of their backfield: Myles Gaskin and Alec Ingold. Both had been held out of the Texans game due to injury.
    • While Achane did not practice with a shoulder injury, he was present and did not appear to have a harness on his left shoulder. There appears to be a real chance he’s back in time for the season opener.
    • Liam Eichenberg was also back at practice after missing time — and not a minute too soon, with Lester Cotton and Robert Jones both dealing with injuries. Eichenberg, Cotton, Jones, and Isaiah Wynn all entered camp with a shot to win the left guard job — a competition that has yet to be resolved.
    • Cotton was spotted doing strenuous rehab, while Jones is on crutches due to an MCL sprain. The knee in question was in a brace.
    • The last time we saw Terron Armstead (Saturday in the preseason game), he was in a walking boot, the result of a lower leg injury. Not only was that boot gone Tuesday, he was comfortable enough to watch practice on two feet.
    • In the secondary, Keion Crossen and Brandon Jones both did some work after sitting out the preseason game.
    • An encouraging sign for Mike White, who is in the concussion protocol: He was on the sidelines during practice.
    • Two Dolphins who practiced Tuesday but are dealing with some sort of issue: Bradley Chubb (who appeared to wear an elbow brace) and Robert Hunt (who had his right ankle taped and walked with a bit of a limp).
