Dolphins: Thursday's practice report
Ernest Wilford is having trouble, big time trouble, getting open. Either Will Allen is a Pro Bowl cornerback or the Dolphins need to try Derek Hagan as a starter. Something has got to give.
Finding ANOTHER fullback to compete with Boomer Grigsby might be a real good idea because I'm expecting Reagan Mauia to be cut any day now if he doesn't pick it up....If this regime has turned over every rock why hasn't Najeh Davenport been given a tryout?...
Shawn Murphy was granted the opportunity to work with the starters at left guard in place of Justin Smiley and got steam rolled at least three times for a sack. He's clearly not starter material right now. Vonnie Holliday, who has looked very good, barely had to touch him to get by....
Joey Porter is blowing people up. He hits with power, and he's very intimidating on the field. I actually heard him threaten a receiver, warning him he'd f-him-up if he caught the ball. I've concluded Porter should remain on the left side. Charlie Anderson and Quentin Moses can present enough pass rushing threat to concern teams. Porter's ability to stuff the run is critical on the left.
Today's session was highlighted by redzone drills at the end, and the pro-John Beck camp isn't going to like what they hear, so if you are pulling for the BYU product don't read any further, and don't read any other practice reports. Just imagine they had the day off.
For the brave....I will no longer refer to Beck by his name on this blog. I'm a nickname guy, and he's officially graduated to "Checkdown," because that's by far his favorite pass.

i'm shaking my head at Wilford.

Wow Wilford whats going on? If anything, that really pushes us to sign Glenn.
Beck, well thats nothing new. Unfortunately, Mr. Checkdown is a very well-suited nickname.
Mr. Porter, THANK GOD YOU HAVE BRIGHTENED MY DAY! I cant wait to see this guy lighting people up and wreaking havoc this year. "Catch that and I'll F u up." hahaha I love it. Step up in some early games Joey and you run this D!Kanye West, TheMageGandalf, Brown42000 and 1 other person like this. -
I appreciate you posting the article. With that said, I wouldn't be so quick to accept his comments as truth.

Now if Wilford was struggling against Travis Daniels- uh oh.Last edited: Jul 31, 2008 -
The Beck supporters have to come to the (very painful, for some) realization that after one week of camp, he looks like what many have said he is...a QB having trouble making the transition to the pro game.
I don't have a dog in the QB fight, so I'll just sit back and hope the best guy gets the job.texasPHINSfan likes this. -

Will Allen is doing an exceptional job in coverage.Always tough reading into it if we are not there to watch.gafinfan likes this. -
Now that I think about it, I wish that I had not included the Beck part- I'd rather read QB info from a different writer.Last edited: Jul 31, 2008phinphever and like2god like this. -
He doesn't even mention the TD to Ginn. I mean, it's a clear anti-beck slant dude.

Read that for another take.phinphever likes this. -
"John Beck is the only quarterback to participate before the thunder rolls through, and it isn’t pretty.
I counted eight snaps, and five of them ended in a sack.
Vonnie got three of them, playing on both the right and left side. One time he blew right past Jake Long and Justin Smiley and reached Beck untouched. Another time Vonnie blew past Murphy, and then Vonnie gets a coverage sack when Beck holds on too long."

Yea I'm not trying to sugarcoat Beck, he isn't doing well. But to go ahead and strip out any of the good bits while leaving in the bad bits, is just not responsible.

Hagan, Bess, Ginn, Kircus...then Camarillo, then Wilford if I had to rank the receivers based only on the plays they've made in practice...without considering the CB they face or the QB throwing
This was taken off his blog in the comments section(his words)
Is this true? Can someone clarify this for me because I don't see it in that same order. Now Bess had looked great but I've also heard that Ginn is the one who has been pretty non-existent throughout TC. -

I would love to see grigsby be the guy. he has the right attitude for a full back. I guarantee he will knock people on there butts!!Last edited: Jul 31, 2008 -
Well, Will Allen IS (or at least SHOULD) be a probowl CB....
That said its not good to hear this, but to be fair Wilford is more of a situational guy, who often wont be matched up on the top CBs. Or if he is, then Ginn needs to exploit whoever is covering him.
I hear good things about Hagan and Bess, and ofc there is Glenn as a rumor as well, so this isnt horribly concerning.
Say what you want about Beck, its not been overly positive so far. Im not saying the other 2 have blown anyone out of the water, which is concerning in general. But really, we need someone to step up come preseason games.
Great news about Porter and Holliday and Allen though, nice to see they are getting after it. They will play key roles for our team this year. -

The Porter parts is just great news. The other stuff, well I take it all for what it is. I try to read as many post practice results and interviews to try and get a general conclusion to what may be happening. Unless we are there watching it, we can't really know. However......
In general it seems that neither QB really stands above the other. All three have been mentioned with adjectives like "nice throw to" "threw a pretty good deep ball to" and such. All three have had the adjectives go the other way at times. The conclusion I come up with is...... WE AREN'T THERE YET. The Quincy Carter thing puzzles me also. Just got to wait and see how it pans out on the field. There is concern here atleast.
The WR's have more good reports then bad and seem to be a pleasent surprise. Ginn has been praised by Sparano, Hagin is mention in almost every blog.
Just trying to not get too worked up either way until it starts counting. -
:hi5: -
BWAHAHAHAHAH
I dunno if we want him...this guy's pretty ****ty... -
So Beck is Chad Pennington 2.0?
-
Funny thing is I had to go to work at 7:30am the next day and didn't remember a thing of it when I woke up or got to work, but as the day passed on I keep having flashes of last night and started to wonder what I did, so I called my dad and asked him if I pissed all over Kelly's clothes last night and he starts laughing and says "Oh yeah, and your sisters are mad as hell at you, if I was you I would stay away for a while till they cool down". -

Good article. I like the redzone drills breakdown.

As for Omar's credibility, the other blogs basically reported the same thing. It's Harvey Fialko-- & Armando that have MAJOR credibility issues IMO. Both of those guys just want attention.:pity: -
So which way is it going to be? -

Here is an alternate report on the red zone drill:

Its an interesting phenomenon that Beck has such a loyal following. He has never wowed anyone in a practice, never incredible in a preseason game, certainly never impressed in a regular season game...and yet...to many, he is beyond criticism. "Its only been one week, the Oline sucks, we don't have quality WRs, excuse, after excuse, after excuse."
Never do they acknowledge that John Beck just might be in over his head in the NFL. And really, whats it to them? Would it be a total surprise that a coach who went 1-15 and fielded one of the worst teams in the history of this league might have missed on the QB he drafted? IMO, its not only possible, but probable.texasPHINSfan and funkdat like this.
