He's right regarding the view on quarterbacks in my opinion.

 

Interpretation, our coach didn't think after four years of working under him that Matt Flynn was franchise caliber, and worth sacrificing other options at the position...

The fact that he feels comfortable at the QB position, to me, suggests they will address it in the draft. Sneaky Ireland...

I get the fact that if Ireland AND Philbin didn't think Matt Flynn could get beat out Moore, you don't pay him a ton of money. Still doesn't make much sense to publicly chase him if that's the case, but OK, I get that.

But the position is not addressed. Not if winning a superbowl is the goal. Not in my opinion.

I agree with everyone else when I sincerely hope it's just a smokescreen. If no QB is taken in this year's draft, Ireland really doesn't get it.

 

Outside of Peyton Manning there wasn't one out there better then we have on the roster right now.

 

How did they "publicly chase" him? They brought him in offered him a contract. That is not a public display.

I'm more interested in whether or not you agree with Ireland's comments that the QB position is addressed. Given what I've heard you say on Ireland and the QB position, you must be a bit conflicted.

Oh no you don't. You made it seem like the FO, made a big to do in the press that they were going after Flynn. They didn't. The media did a lot of speculating.

I think relative to what was available the QB situation is fine. I think they think Garrard is an upgrade over Henne and whoever they draft will be an upgrade to Devlin and the future. They tried to get Manning, but after him no one better was available. So yeah I think they are ok. If after the draft we don't have ****, we can revisit it. But again for what they could get, there's fine.

 

Gonna hold you to that. I have a feeling Ireland is going to be making a lot more Parcellian picks. I'm really hoping he proves me wrong at #8 if Tannehill is there.

 

Exactly. We offered him a contract, probably lower than the contract Seattle offered him, and that's that.

If we offered him a higher contract that's a different story. We probably low balled the crap out of him. After my non-guru butt watched his highlights, I turned into Dave Wannstedt.

What can Matt Flynn do that Matt Moore can't? He made a few good throws. But a lot of what I saw was superb WR play.

Osweiler is a big dude. If he could be developed I would not mind getting him late to compete with Devlin. He had some bright spots but raw and the system he played in was total horse crap. No structure no guidance.

I think you rarely can 'address' the QB situation in FA. Perhaps Manning would have by definition, 'addressed' the position, although I still have doubts. I'll have to see him recover before I believe it... At any rate, if there isn't anyone else you like out there, do you chase after guys anyway just to be chasing them ?? I think the only mistake was Ross proclaiming that he wanted to acquire a franchise guy this offseason. They have 'addressed' the position. It may not be a franchise guy, but the position is better than last season if for no other reason than we have a more capable backup. MMoore is likely to be 'better' than last season, so that can be looked at a plus...so in effect they've addressed the situation just haven't installed a franchise guy...

But I agree, you can't really take much of what NFL GM types and coaches say at this time of the year...On the other hand, he's given himself an out now, because if we swing and miss on a QB, he can say after the draft that he's already 'addressed' the QB situation...

Yes. If Ireland doesn't spend one pick on a QB, then I'll be interested to see what your thoughts are on him then. Or if you will still think a guy who feels David Garrard and Matt Moore are suitable QBs to winning in today's NFL should continue to be a GM in this league.

Why? Why would that be so absurd? It's been the Dolphins biggest need for 12 years. Maybe just once spending a first round pick on the game's most important position would make sense, no?

 

My interpretation of it was that it was addressed through the free agency market. That does not exclude it from being addressed in the draft, which is expected.

Fortune favors the bold. Value in regards to a QB is relative. Its time we grew our own and until we're 100% sure we THE guy, I want our first pick spent on a QB till we get the one. ****, every other position. Its time we had our guy and we aren't going anywhere of consequence without him.

 

Yes it would if the players talent actually justified the position. Tannenhill is a developmental QB whos ceiling isn't really all that high.

Just because you need a wife you don't marry a hooker, and just because you need a QB you don't draft someone devoid of NFL talent.

 

That's your opinion, and if that's the opinion of the FO (even if I don't trust it) then yes, what you're saying makes sense. But from what I've been hearing/reading from the talent evaluators is that this kid has franchise QB potential. And you don't thumb your nose at that.

I think I have a much different perspective on this then many of you fellow fans.

1. He has no 2nd thoughts on adressing the QB postion?

2. He wanted Manning but failed at getting him

3. He is confident in Matt Moore

4. Going big for any of the available QB's in FA would of been reckless

5. He feels good about our QB situtation

Thats the 5 basic things he conveyed in that quote. IMO he has left himself no wiggle room at all. Either we see a high level or QB performance this year or he is a failure as a GM. If he would of said he went with the best options in front of him, then I could understand if it did not pan out. That not what he is telling us. He is sayiong he wanted Manning but could not persuade him to come here but he has a back up plan that also secures us with good QB playing going into this season. Moore, Garrad, some rookie, according to him we are secure at the QB postion. IMO this is a big gamble on his part to say that we are secure.

Now with the Flynn thing I think it might of been one of his better moments as our GM if he is looking to draft a rookie QB. If by bringing Flynn in for a look conned Seattle into to over comitting on a contract with him so much so that they have effectively eliminated themselves from considering making a big move in the draft on another QB then he did eliminate a potential suitor for whichever rookie he might be interested in drafting. If thats the case I give him props for playing his hand the way he did on that.

Bottom line is if we do not see good QB play this season then Ireland fail;ed to live up to the expectations that he put on the postion. He does not get a pass from me if he says we are secure at the QB postion and then he fails to back that up with results.

 

Again, value when it comes to a franchise QB is relative. So relative, value can only be assessed by a team's need.

We aren't going anywhere without a franchise QB. No one is. Its fact. There's no point in arguing it anymore.

What we have is a league that has changed and a draft that has become less deadly. The Patriots need to be finding Brady's replacement. Hell, the Colts just dumped Manning solely to get his replacement. The Patriots need at Brady's replacement is vital, but their need is less than ours because they still have him. So they don't need to burn a first on a maybe candidate. Our need is greater so we have less time for error.

There's two ways to make money as a server in a restaurant. Work at place with extremely high checks where you get a small amount of tables a night OR a place with low checks and you can turn & burn and make money based on sheer numbers. We need to carpet bomb the QB search. I'm fine not paying a bunch of money for a FA you aren't thrilled with, but not spending a draft pick on one is silly to me.

 

Perhaps the Patriots already have drafted Brady's replacement.

I don't think we draft a qb this year. Remember most teams only kept .2 last year bc of the change in roster rules
