Which is 100% correct, McCown is what he is, a journeyman QB. Beck has an upside, will he make it? Who knows, but it was a no brainer to keep him.

 

surprised he said that about Beck but as one of his biggest critics I gotta tip my hat to the guy. He must've been playing well in practice. The upside comment is a no brainer but to say that his play in the last week and a half solidified it is interesting. Either its more poker from these guys trying to get someone to bite on a trade or its a genuine commentary. Hopefully its a genuine commentary. Great and Beck havent been used in the same sentence for quite a while

 

If you watch the presser, he says exactly that. Beck improved as training camp progressed. McCown did not. Beck's ceiling is much higher than McCown's, therefore McCown was shipped off to Carolina. (I doubt he's complaining, Carolina is a better team than we are. For now.)

Beck isn't going anywhere, at least this season. The 2009 QB competition is critical for the future of our franchise. Someone not named Chad Pennington needs to win.

Doubt that. IMO, next year's quarterback crop is going to be one of the better classes in a while, presuming the declarations of guys like Matt Stafford.

 

If that's the case then Ireland will probably pick another one of his own QB's and Beck will likely be the odd man out come training camp. Either way, as it stands today, as the 3rd string QB odds are against Beck being on this team next year at this time.

 

Heavily disagreed. If Beck comes along, there's no reason to pick a QB, especially with the myriad other needs on this team. We need a stud pass rusher ala DeMarcus Ware, a receiver, probably some more OL depth, a stud corner, and a couple of other things.

The good quarterback class just means talent at the positions we need will fall to us.

 

We shall find out what happens, it could go either way IMHO. Regardless, i'm not too worried about the 3rd string Quarterback position.

Since CP been starting i've thought he was better then 1/2 the QB's in the NFL, like i've said before we shouldn't be in a rush to get rid of a real good QB.Not after past 9 years of hell.

As far as Beck.... i'm happy for him he's still here,but they have been trying to move him , it was only after they didn't get what they wanted for him that they moved McCown.So Becks job is not very safe,any team could have him for a 5th round pick it would seem, seeing how Dallas offered a late round pick and we didn't take it.

Also Beck's ceiling has always been much higher than McCown's, thats why so many Dolfans get bent when he does not play well.anyways

 

Yep. It looks like Beck might actually be able to be that long term backup that so many of us have advocated him being. Good for young Johnny. Its good to see nice people do well.

I have to admit, I was worried for him. He obviously shows more in practice than he does in games. But in any case, poor plays and fumbles aside, he is actually going to be our emergency QB in week one, and thats a good thing.

 

They were so spot on with their McCown analysis that anything Parcells says about QBs has to be taken with all the salt in Utah.

 

Exactly, the Qb position brings out some of the oddest comments, Beck is a third string Qb with physical talent and a head full of mush at the moment, it costs us very little to keep him.

I can't help but think that a full year in Henning's offense will do wonders for him, he just seems to have a tough time learning offenses, which to me comes from his 4yrs in a BYU shotgun mostly offense.

You can see the mistake that was made last year from here, the FO thought he was a 4yr starter with great intelligence and character with way above average tools, they just didn't plan on Beck's slow learning curve and at the moment, lack of mental toughness.

To me, he improved in Camp because the pressure was off of him, the results didn't "Count" so to speak.

 

You know the old saying those that can do - those that can't coach. I would be thrilled to have Beck's set of eyes on the sidelines of every game. I have absolutely no doubt he's a smart guy and probably knows the rules of being a Qb very well. To actually do those at pro game speed may not be quite his role. If he can be an extra set of eyes to help Pennington, Henning & Sparano this season he's well worth his spot on the roster.

 

I'm sure glad we kept Beck!!

It never helps getting rid of such a valuable commodity as a young quarterback that can make it in this league. Even if we hold on we've got nothing to lose, his value won't go down.

I know he's older, etcc etc...

He's still worth more than a 6th or 7th.

 

I think it's kind of sad what has happen to Beck.

He has everything you'd look for out of a starting NFL QB.Yet he just can't seem to use his god given talent the way we'd all like.

The guy made more $$$ in the NFL then i'll make for the next 30 years so it's kind of hard to feel sorry for him, yet i always will because it seems like he'll always be a shell of what he could of been.:(

Exactly how I had hoped this would turn out as soon as they signed Pennington. Gives Beck another year to develop and either turn into a good QB for us or good trade bait.

Trying to put a positive spin on the situation. I can't feel too bad for him, he's young has a family, strong faith and a hell of a nice bank account.

 

I think John Beck will improve greatly within the next year, he has a problem with the NFL Offense, and now he has Henning, Lee, and Pennington to learn from, as long as he keeps working hard, he will pick things up, it's just that Beck's learning Curve is not NFL friendly at the moment, if it takes you 7 months to learn an offense and learn your reads, and the season starts in 5 months, you will not be ready to play.

 

The only way I'd move Beck is if we get an offer we cant pass up....like a 2nd or 3rd rounder.

I got called out (I think by Like2God, but I'm not sure) for being one that wanted Matt Ryan. I corrected him that I didn't specifically want Ryan, but I did want to address the QB situation early.

That position was extremely controversial at the time, although now the notion of going inot the season with Beck and McCown seems downright silly. But many supported doing just that.

I think you were one of them. Am I right?

There was speculation about that happening early this year or late last year, but no one could have known it would happen.

That would make 20/20 hinsight useless in this case, the arrival of Pennington changed everything, no one could have known that would happen.

 

Which you did and I posted the quotes to back it up. Yes you were also open to other QB's (Flacco), but you were more than willing to accept Ryan at #1 while many of us wanted one of the Long's or Dorsey to fill other needs on the team. The opinion was that we had more important needs with our top drafts choices this year, that Ryan wasn't worth the #1 and that we could find a QB in the 3rd-7th round and let Beck get a shot this year. We are a rebuilding team and we should see what our young players have to offer instead of letting them sit on the bench, that's what rebuilding teams do and that's the opinion that many of us shared. To try and spin it after the fact that we didn't want a QB at all is disingenuous.

Now the question is, does the FO still view this as a rebuilding team? I think they shifted from their previous statements and are now in a retooling mode which is risky and it's something that Parcells tried with the Jets which led to overpaying average veteran players that Parcells was "comfortable with" and eventually a salary cap mess. I don't think anyone here would want this team to be in that position once Parcells decides it's time to skip town, do you?

 

The book is not written on him yet. Many QBs take longer to develop, we don't know if Beck will be one of those. Ireland and the coaches saw that Beck is the best passer on the team, that's his upside. So far however, the mental side is not there. It was there in college so there is reason to believe that the ability could be there but will just take a little longer to blossom in the pros. Too many base their entire QB analysis on whether a QB looks comfortable early. That level of analysis would have doomed several HOF QBs. I'm not saying Beck is destined for the HOF, he may be out of the NFL in a year. I'm just saying that Beck's potential is still an unknown and it seems the Dolphin brain thrust is smart enough to realize that.

 

The what if game can be played by anyone and as padre said hindsight is 20/20. I'm a Beck guy:yes:and who is to say that before this season is out it could be that Beck will play and look the best of the three of them. I wanted a QB drafted this season and will go on record as saying I want it to happen again next year. Did I want us to draft Matty Ice, no, I thought and still think he will not be as good as where he was drafted the same goes for Quinn. Am I right, who knows or cares, because none of them have yet to play and win a real game. I remember a QB or two that always looked bad in preseason but when it came time to strap it on they always showed up, Danny was one of them. Jim Kelley was another, hell the Bills always lost preseason games, it sure didn't hurt them in their SB runs once the bullets started flying. Remember the Colts have won a grand total of 3 out of the last 17 yet they are always in the hunt. Preseason means NOTHING; it just makes us feel good and gives us something to talk about.

I remember a few years back when the Jets won all 4 of their preseason games and were the darlings of the NFL, win it all, going to the SB, can't miss, and if memory serves I think they won maybe 4 games.

Next Jan., when we look back on this year, I'm sure that alot of hindsight and I told you so's will be flying but no one really knows. For all we know we may wake up next Monday to find that Beck is traded to .......... and we picked up .......... for him. Then that team goes on to win a SB.

Interesting, I think the acquisition of CP raised our hopes for this year. CP could easily be our QB for the next 3-4 years. And I think that the FO has to be happy with how well the rookies are performing. I don't know that they could have expected a guy like Donald Thomas to look as good as he has. Also the S position apparently has a lot more talent than they expected. I also think RW's play surprised them. Overall, my guess is that the team has more talent than they anticipated having at this point but I don't see any signs yet that they are switching to retooling mode. I think they still see holes at LB, WR, OL depth, and NT depth. And of course they'll continue to look for upgrades everywhere. I also think that Ireland is here for the long haul so I'm not as worried about us breaking the bank before BP's possible/probable departure in a few years.

 

Well we still have alot of question marks at key positions (WR, TE, LB, CB, S) and health concerns/aging players/upcoming FA's at other spots, so this is a work in progress that won't right itself overnight. I agree that some players have stepped up and surprised, but that shouldn't change the focus of the team even before the start of season #1. I think we'll know for sure how the FO views this team once roster cuts and pickups are finalized. But after reading about the interest in guys like Glenn, Bentley, etc that leads me to believe that the FO is open to bringing in aging vets at the expense of some of our young players if it means adding one more W to the win/loss column. IMO that is retooling and not rebuilding and that is how Parcells left the Jets in a mess. :wink2:
