Ireland’s, Dolphins’ arrogance unacceptable

Its not particularly rare to ask a prospect questions that are designed to fluster a prospect that have nothing to do with football. That's a pretty surefire way to do it.

I don't think arrogant is the correct word here. Perhaps brazen, or rude, would be more appropriate. I thought this was going to have to do with not drafting a safety because we're already 'good enough' or something.

I wouldn't call it arrogant. I would call it pretty freaking stupid, if it's true.

I am just curious, what exactly rings of arrogance there? You want me to pay you millions of dollars, then you'd better expect you have a background check done, and then be asked about any issues.

I generally like what this F.O. has done with many of it's personnel decisions, but I don't think they have been particularly classy or even professional in their dealings.

Ireland's approach needed more not less!!!!! Thats the headline that nails the story - you dont like the heat, stay out the kitchen also works.

I don't see the big deal...if his mother has a questionable background, as it appears from the story that she does, and you have a guy who has lots of questions about his character, questions about his mother seem pretty appropriate. Maybe there was a reason they asked him that question...

Don't see what the problem is here. It would pi$$ anyone off, but if that's what Ireland wants to ask before giving someone a multi-million dollar contract, why shouldn't he?

Sounds like he has beef with the Phins and Ireland.

Of course they left out the part where Ireland adds "cause ive got a $10 spot" but yea that is pretty classless.

It's a bull**** question, plain and simple.

It's none of his ****ing business for one. And two, it's not like he doesn't already know the answer.

I don't care how many millions the contract is for. It's 100 percent unprofessional, inappropriate and irrelevant. If I'm in a job interview and somebody says that to me having already done an extensive background check, I'm going to be highly offended. And they're going to know about it.

Meh. I think the question was designed to make Dez mad. To see how he reacts to certain situations. I am willing to bet that worse questions are asked every year of certain prospects.

Is in classless? Most likely, but what is classy about watching a bunch of grown men run around in their underwear, and judging their merits and value based on how fast/strong they are? The whole process is classless.

And it sounds like Dez Bryant handled it the way he should have. It is essentially, a psych test. Something I WANT my GM to conduct when vetting potential employees in this field. I see no issue with this.

This is on the heels of Zach Thomas saying that while he doesn;t disagree with some of what Jeff Ireland says, he claims Ireland needs sensitivity or media training to learn how to talk to people properly.

This is from Zach Thomas a week and a half ago.

Now we hear about Ireland again displaying the interpersonal skills of a garbage compactor.

1) If you need to ask it, you can do it in a less antagonistic way (or maybe he did and we don;t know the wording... maybe Ireland DID say "I hate to ask you this, but..." who knows)

2) If someone needs to purposely provoke a player by being an ******* to him, let it be the team psycholigst or some 3rd party we have in instead of the GM so we don;t give a bad reputation to the franchise. PLayers and people in the league need to want to deal with Ireland for trades and signings, and it also affects the rep if the organization more when the GM asks this than when someone else, like a 'psych evaluator, or something, asks it in a purpiosely antagonist a-hollish way to get a reaction.

Nice is one thing. I would like to see more professionalism. I don't even have a huge problem with asking about the mom. I think that could be done in a manner that isn't offensive. We don't know how (or even if) it was asked, but their track record doesn't make it sound likely that they did it in a respectful manner.

I also think their handling of ZT and JT was unprofessional. I'm not saying the personnel decisions were wrong, just the handling of them. IMO this hurts the organization in the long term. Most vets realize that it is a business and that they may be let go someday, but that doesn't mean that they should be treated poorly at that time. If I were a vet considering where to sign, the F.O.'s treatment of ZT and JT would be something I would list in the "con" column. It wouldn't be my only, or even my primary consideration, but it would be a consideration.

i watch ireland press conferences and he has no problem with the media
the guy is a stckler and people don't like it point blank.
there was nothing wrong asking that question to get a reaction.

How do we know this was even said? How do we know it was Ireland? There were two people in that room so there are two versions of what was said and what occurred. It is never wise to make factual assumptions based on one person's version of events.

If anything Bryant has unwittingly shown he is a potential leak for inner team matters. This and viewing his extensive entourage on draft night (for a guy possibly surrounded by bad influences) enforces the reasons why he dropped the way he did.

IT's a tough question to ask, but sometimes it's better to hear it from the player himself than to just assume. Also, we don't know the context in how he asked it. I would only judge Ireland not for asking the question but for how he asked it.

If for instance he said: " So i hear your mom's a prositute, how long has she been doing that?"

Is different than: "There have been people talking and they said your mom is a prostitute, i wanted to hear your opinion on those allegations before assuming it's true and how you handle public spotlight sensitive rumors like that?"

I wonder if Vick would have been mad if a GM asked him about Dogfighting during his interview process, perhaps there were rumors but no GM asked the question. Also, totally irrelevant to a qb job in the NFL, until said rumor turns out to be true and the franchise loses millions from a nightmare PR circus. If a GM asked the question, got a bad vibe from Vick's answer, perhaps he wouldn't have been selected where he was.

Not the same circumstances but if you are going to invest in a player, you need to be diligent so you know everything your getting and what ramifications can come from it. There's a reason teams know about family, high school coaches/teachers opinions on a player, friends they hang with, incidents they were involved with, how they reacted/managed those tough life situations. LIfe in the NFL spotlight isn't always easy. Then you decide if that risk, on the field and off, are worth the reward of taking that player. So yes family matters do play a role in the NFL, it's not a normal type of job or job interview process.

Tough question to ask and morally it may not have been right to ask it, but it all comes down to how thorough your staff is at determining the whole player your getting, both on and off the field. If Ireland was an ass about how he asked Dez, then i would think thats terrible. But a yahoo article, hearing whispers it was ireland and just accusing him of something taken out of context. I'm sorry I have to reserve judgement unless i knew more. Which won't ever happen i'm sure.

I don't think it's the comparison(his mother's action=bad football player). I think it's more of 1-2 years down the road as he's walking out of an opposing teams stadium and the random fan yells a comment. If he got upset at the question presented to him in a controlled environment, what will his reaction be given the above scenario.

For the record I do NOT condone this type of questioning/behavior if it was indeed done in such a crude manner. On the other hand, as The Aqua Crush has said, if it was stated with bluntness or direct question I don't have a problem with this. JMO. :)
