Big dude...Just passin some news..
EDMONTON - Jerome Messam is taking his talents to South Beach.
A breakthrough season with the Canadian Football League’s Edmonton Eskimos has led to the talented running back signing a deal with the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League.
Eskimos general manager Eric Tillman confirmed the news late Saturday night.
“Yes, it’s true. Jeff Ireland (Dolphins general manager) phoned me late afternoon and said they had decided to offer Jerome a contract, but their proposal would not include a signing bonus,” Tillman said.
“We weren’t positive that proposal would be accepted, but in the past couple of hours, Darren Gill, Jerome’s agent, confirmed they had discussed the situation and would be accepting the offer from Miami.

The only question I have is why in the world is a 6'4 240lb RB in the CFL? I thought RunningBacks were suppost to be speedy in the CFL?

First time Ireland has signed a Most Outstanding Canadian Award winner, my real question about him is whether or not he can do the other things a NFL running back has to do, block, recognize blitzes, play Special Teams etc. -
At least Irish was smart in not offering him a signing bonus. If he stays, good; if not, we don't owe him anything.

Sounds like he could be another LaGarrett Blount if he has some success.

Thusly no signing bonus, temptation is not a problem, he is never tempted, he always says "yes"..
As for the jibber jabber, keep in mind he's 250 pds plus, do folks expect Barry Sanders? -

The have running backs in the CFL? Even so, isn't this akin to searching for a wife at a cathouse?

Jerome Don't Be Messam With Him. Guy gets north south in a hurry. Pretty decent hands too. Nice top end speed. Maybe we'd move him to tight end?

We needed more depth at RB now we don't need to take one in the latter rounds
-
One would have to think he's a power back, no?

Miami's answer to the Giant's Brandon Jacobs Height: 6-4 Weight: 264? I like the possibilities...

The Dolphins have had success with ONE player who played in Canada, Cameron Wake. The rest of these Canadian castoffs have ended up being nothing but preseason bodies. They usually end up right back in Canada, as I expect Messam will. There is a reason these players end up in Canada and the reason is that most of them are just not good enough to play in the NFL. For very Cameron Wake, Warren Moon, and Joe Thiesman, who played in Canada and made it in the NFL, there are hundreds of former Canadian players who have failed to make it in the NFL.
I have no problem with Ireland signing these players, but I am also not surprised when they end up back in the CFL after being cut in training camp. -

Seriously, there have been a few gems mined from Cananda, but generally they are just camp fodder...That's ok, because if he turns out to be as successful for us as Wake or Dixon have been, that's fine with me...If not, it's not like we've lost a draft pick or whatever...jsizzle likes this. -

Low risk/high reward signing. The most apt comparison I've heard is Lawrence Phillips. I don't know that I see quite that level of talent, but with more maturity in HS this guy could easily have turned into a productive back at a major university. Truth is that there are NFL level athletes in the CFL and other places, but NFL success is about more than being a great athlete. My impression is that Messam has enough ability to play in the NFL. His success or failure will depend on his work ethic, ability to learn and whether he can/will be a professional.
And Mark Dixon was great, arguably our best OL for a time until he got hurt. I actually think that if had stayed healthy that he would have deserved mention as one of the franchise's best O-lineman ever. Below Dwight Stephenson, but in that class with Kuechenberg.dolfan7171 likes this. -
I remember the forlorning when the dolphins players said Dixon was their best O-linemen...

Sounds like there is a snag in all of this, Messam SHOULD have some signing money coming his way, not a fortune, but if he comes down here, does not make the team or practice squad, he will be out 8 CFL game checks at least, which is not a huge amount of $$$ but still imo the Dolphins should offer him some scratch to defray his risk a bit. -
Maybe this keeps Ireland from trading away multiple picks to reach for another mediocre RB in the draft this year. Here's hoping...
