Was reading another thread where another poster suggested as much, and it got my wondering...is Ricky done?
I will say he hasn't looked very good so far this season IMO. He looks tentative, like he's lost a step. He's got a meager 3.43/YPC average after 35 carries, and he's fumbled twice over the past two weeks. I mean, the guy is 33 after all, so it's not unreasonable to think that he's on the decline. But, the bigger question IMHO might be...should he be getting an equal share of the carries?
Ronnie Brown by contrast, is averaging a rather robust 5.4/YPC on 37 carries, and looks to be running strong. And, at 28, he's in his prime, and he's playing for his big contract. I'm all for keeping Ronnie fresh (and healthy), but I guess what I'm wondering is...shouldn't we be featuring Ronnie more, and relegating Ricky to more of a back up role?

He has a bad case of fumbilitis and it is starting to piss me off! :tantrum:
I love Ricky but it looks like he could care less about ball security. -

Is he done? No, I believe he still has a some left in the tank.
Should he be getting this many carries? Absolutely not.
I understand that we want to be careful with Ronnie coming off an injury, but he has looked great in limited chances. The fact he has only 2 more carries than Ricky so far is a complete joke. Bottom line is Ronnie is the better all around back by a nice margin and doesn't have fumbling problems. He should be getting 70% of the touches, and the fact he hasn't yet is kind of troublesome.HULKFish likes this. -

No, I don't think he is done, I do agree that he looks tenative however when he does find a hole he still can turn upfield and make plays.
What bothers me about RW's play is his head does not seem to be in the games, missing blocks has nothing to do with fuel in the tank, fumbling has nothing to do with fuel in the tank.
I sorta wonder if Ricky is bored?gunn34 likes this. -
Im not sure. I dont think he's done, but i will say he's not playing the way he did last year. We'll see though.

Ricky used to have a fumbling problem in the past. I remember we used to joke that it was because his biceps were so big they forced the ball out.

IMO, the reason Ricky was able to have the success he had at the end of the season was because he was in a backup role last year early. I have Ricky in fantasy so I could keep up with his numbers. He had some big numbers but that was usually after Ronnie Brown already had a couple hundred yards and a TD+. The guy had fresh legs while the defenses had half a season of work already done. I think he can be good but putting him in such a featured role IMO wouldn't be wise at this point.

Ricky Williams is horrible.

With that being said, Ricky is not done. He's fumbled a few, but every time he was powering over defenders and got the s&#t knocked out of him. There's a big difference between a fumble and a takeaway (sorry fantasy folks), and although statistically they both go down as a RB error it sometimes can not be avoided...they were great defensive plays.
As long as Ricky is running like a bull and fighting for extra yards, he's far from being finished. Last week we were having this conversation with many saying Henne was finished...I think we all know how that one turned out. Williams is still a solid back and until someone better comes along, he'll get the 15-25 carries per game.dolfan32323 likes this. -
I don't see RW powering over defenders. I see him going down fairly soon after contact. Those weren't big hits that knocked the ball out, RW just fumbled. It's obvious that we have someone better in RB. The split should now be 2/3 RB and 1/3 RW at a minimum.

Watch any of his fumbles again from this season (the one Ronnie fumbled too for that matter) and you'll see Ricky with his head down and pushing for extra yardage. He wasn't stripped, he didn't just drop it....he was hit hard, dead on the ball, while pushing forward.
If he wasn't exploding through the line of scrimmage they wouldn't have been fumbles. That doesn't jutify the turnovers by any means, but that doesn't mean we should be talking retirement either. Take any RB in the league and put them right there at the point of contact, and every single one of them would have fumbled...it was just good defensive plays. -
Its not his body thats the problem, or losing a step, I saw some burst in the preseason, and I also saw him lowering his head upon contact in a violent way, that's when I know he's playin well..For some reason right now his head is not in the game, and I would really like to know wtf it is, cause if its gonna continue, then he needs to be on the bench til he figures it out...
I love the dude, but I also understand how his mind works , the pressures of the media, and the negativity that ignorant people have around him, could get inside his head..
I wish he would speak up...we know somethin aint right. -
He does a hour long raido show every week on wqam you could call in and ask him if ya want.
He said the 1st fumble was because he was trying to make a big play coming out of the endzone like RB did.
And i don't think the media gets to him like it has in the past, he seems to think they are all pricks now. -

RW needs to secure the ball better, ESPECIALLY coming out of the endzone. I like Ricky just as everyone else but he seems to have lost a step. I think djphinfan is right about the mind, but I have to say physically he hasn't looked the same this season, running the ball.
Ronnie on the other hand, looks like a player ready to have a break-out game! Hopefully on MNF!!! -
I am a huge Ricky Williams fan and think that his come back story is one of the best in the NFL. I did a little digging and found that fumbling has been common throughout his career.

I guess when you are so stoned that you can't even close your hands you are getting some great stuff. Seriously though I think that they are relying too much on him with huge expectations and maybe it's time to draft an RB this year that can shoulder more of his load. It's too early to tell but it might be time to starting thinking about putting him in Canton.late again likes this. -
Ricky has pretty much always had a fumbling issue. One reason is because he has relatively small hands. In fact he has 48 fumbles over the course of his career.

Danny Thomas could be a suitable replacement. Maybe it's time to start looking....
Daniel Thomas, RB, Kansas State
Height: 6-2. Weight: 227.
Projected 40 Time: 4.60.
Projected Round (2011): 2-3.
3/29/10: Daniel Thomas rushed for 1,265 yards and 11 touchdowns on a 5.1 YPC. He also caught 25 balls for 257 more yards. If he can run a fast 40, he may break into the first round. -

Williams is showing us that the end of last year was somewhat about his age catching up to him. Done is a relative term, but he can still be useful for us if used correctly. I believe that next season we see a complete turn over of backs on this team....I'm going to prognosticate that Brown leaves via FA (they won't pay him what someone else may) and Ricky moves on as well. Cobbs is irrelevant in this conversation because he is not capable of being a #1 or #2 back in this offense.... -
The signs have been there.Father time catches up with everybody .
He was always pretty effective running down the sidelines and I havent seen that this year.Instead we have seen experiments with Marshall and Cobb trying to get to the edge with poor results.
Lets hope its because Ricky hasnt got untracked rather than he is done .gafinfan likes this. -
I wrote Ricky off years ago, when I thought he was just coming back to the game because of his debts.
I'm not gonna make the mistake again. To me it doesn't look like a physical problem. It just looks like his head isn't there right now. I don't see that killer instinct, that punishing running mentality. It really is a mindset. -

My opinion is that he has lost a step. He looks slow and, as Padre said, uninterested. Ronnie's YPC is quite good. We need to be running the ball more often and with him. Ricky should be relegated to Wildcat duties and the occasional sub of Ronnie in my opinion.
And Killer is right as well, it is time to start looking at drafting a young running back to replace one or both of the R & R Express.Killerphins and cobrajet like this. -

I don't think RW needs to retire immediately. I think he's still functional as a back-up, but I do think he's done as a starter. That was obvious last season when he wore down after about three games. I also think he's done as a co-starter. RB is clearly the better back right now.
And the fumbling has always been a liability of his. I think people just forgot b/c he was carrying less often, but over his career he averaged a fumble every 52 touches or so. Since his "unretirement" he's fumbled about once every 39 touches. That is a horrible average. I haven't seen any stats for fumbles per carry but the worst I can think of is Sammy Smith who fumbled at a rate of about once every 30 touches.CrunchTime likes this.
