This franchises name is being dragged through the mud.
If Philbin does not survive this offseason, I could see the Dolphins trying to woo Mike Shula as our next head coach.
It would recall some of the legacy, reputation for class and goodwill Don Shula's name carries.
It's probably the best HC choice from a purely PR perspective with one other exception: Tony Dungy.
Dungy's reputation as an honorable man who would never have this sort of behavior in his locker room, plus him being a role model as an African American Superbowl Champion head coach and generally agreed upon high-character man would also help us put this mess behind us.
Mike Shula or Tony Dungy. Our best chances at rehabbing our image.

We are 4-4 and in the playoff hunt. If we end 6-10 or worse by all means fire Philbin.
Until then, lets see what this teams got. I see us winning more than a few games from here on out. Media bs be damned.finyank13 likes this. -
Citizen... I'm talking purely in a PR and image context....
Though I see what you're saying... if we make the playoffs, you think this is less damaging to us?
I think it leaves a black eye on the franchise in ALL scenarios save one: if Martin recants entirely and apologizes.
And even then you have a GM sying players should punch one another, crass texts with racial slurs that have offended the public,
an Olinemen who rubbed a young lady's privates had the guy rub his provates against her *** and pour water on her degradingly
while she was volunteering and not in a position to do much about it (she did complain to her supervisor, and then the police when nothing was done).
In so many ways, these things are NOT good for team's image.
Winning may please Maimi fans, but the rest of the country will look at what was once a proud franchise with a complete lack of respect and you
know what bothers me.... they will have every right to do so. We've earned it.
I'd like to look at what it would take to undo the hole we are digging ourselves into. -
The only one? No. A good candidate? Sure.
I wouldn't be surprised if (more likely when) Philbin get's the axe that we may look into respected coaches who are looking for another go. Lovie Smith springs to mind. Maybe a college guy like Shaw if you could woo him over here. -
I think Tony Dingy would be ideal, from a PR perspective. Well respected. Class. Reputation for good values and no nonsense.
People would assume the lockeroom had integrity under Dungy.
Also, he was with Peyton as he came along, so that'd be nice to have around Tannehill. Of course, Dungy was more defensive-minded
so he didn't do the hands-on QB development of Peyton, but still.Lee2000 likes this. -
The patriots were caught literally cheating in the Super Bowl. But they win football games, so no one remembers. Bounties for intentionally hurting other players? no one remembers cause...the saints win football games. Ray Lewis' murder trial, chiefs player murders his wife and commits suicide in facility, plaxico shoots his own leg in a night club, etc etc, all forgotten. The answer is winning football games.
If we can't win football games, you fire everyone anyway. But if we can...people will stop caring about the other crap.
We have a Mnf game against Tampa, a tough home game against sd, and another against Carolina. We can win them though. This team gets to 6-4 or 7-4 and the discussions will disappear.
If not...fire peopleHiggi, Pagan, MikeHoncho and 3 others like this. -

have you seen don shula lately ? there is nothing that guy could do other than make us look even more weak
-
I just don't know. Maybe everyone is wired a little different. Winning isn't enough to make me feel fan-dom.
For me it's about believing in something.
I have even had trouble cheering with the same excitement since seeing the concussion/brain trauma documentary. Now we are looking at a rather ugly side
of what's accepted as normal in football culture.
I love this sport, but I have to question if it's an ethically sound sport to support. Heck, I loved boxing but I don;t watch it anymore for that reason. -
It's my fault though. I should have specified which Shula (Mike) in the thread title, but I thought people would read once they were in. I should also have mentioned Dungy in the thread title. OF course, once you create the thread you can't edit the title (can you?) -
-
Most people will keep watching football. I'll probably be one of them. But if I stopped, I'm sure there's lots else to do. -
Bpk, MIke Shula, really? I'd rather stick with the circus will currently have. You're assuming that Mike Shula's name carries even a fraction of the same weight as the Don. It's not the case. That's like voting for George Bush Jr because he father was president. Oops, wrong forum.

Oh, and I'd avoid Shula. Unless, of course, we could clone Don......Bpk likes this. -
Tony Dungy is a sanctimonious, self-righteous ******* and a bigot, and I don't want him anywhere near this team.

Too old.

I think our rep will be fine when all the dust settles. I think that because I truly believe Martin is lying and that it will eventually come out that he is. It won't change everyone's opinion, but I don't care about that.
I think the best PR move we can make is firing Ireland and making Dawn Aponte GM. The PR from that will make the majority of the fanbase happy for getting rid of Ireland and everyone else will feel positive about the Dolphins having the first woman GM.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, I believe Ireland should be fired now. No it has nothing to do with Cogs. No I can't talk about it down here. No I will not PM anyone about it. -

As long as our players get people fantasy points nothing matters.

Sign Tebow...he is literally the only thing that would somehow, against all odds, trump the media coverage right now.
All agents assigned to the Dolphins "implosion story" would immediately switch gears and pour all existing resources to covering Tebow joining the Dolphins.Bpk likes this. -

It won't surprise me if Shula doesn't come anywhere near the Dolphins for a while, to protect his own reputation. Like it or not, right now we are a bad joke and a circus. Why would Shula want to get involved with this?
We need to win some games. If we win, all this becomes nothing more than a back-page side story. The media will move on to the next big thing.
Let's just go and win, guys. Start in Tampa, Monday night, in front of God and everyone. Change the narrative, starting with pounding the daylights out of the Bucs. -

Still not buying this mindset on what happened BPK.
It's not just lockeroom behavior it's behavior and interactions between people period.
Guys joke around and rib much rougher than women yet have no malicious intent in doing so.
I could go through a ton of examples with personal friends.
If you took texts messages or taped certain conversations between friends ribbing each other and presented them as LITERAL everyone would be horrified.
If you took messages between people trying to motivate others in an animated way literally you'd think they were threatening them.
If you took transcripts of comedians performances and presented them as literal they'd be looked at as the worst people on the planet.
Heck even interactions between men and women. If you took messages between lovers dirty talking to each other about what they're going to do to each other everyone would think these people were deviants.
Normal functioning adults can determine the context of conversations and the situations they happen in.
Some adults simply aren't able to. Enter Jonathan Martin.Bpk likes this. -

I don't think the whole team deserves to be indicted like this, so hopefully they bond, keep continuing to build with the right guys, and leave this eye soar in the dust.. -
I actually hesitated to mention it this week with a couple people and that bothered me. I am not the kind of guy who does that.
These ****ers are making such a mess of things I am EMBARRASSED to be a fan right now... of TODAY'S franchise... not
of the history we have, or what this team SHOULD be... but the mockery we ARE.
Even Cam Cameron NEVER managed to make me feel that way. As we faced 0-16 I still told people I was a Phins fan. Teams can lose, but they cannot act immoral, unethical, boorish, and do so throughout the organization and still have me proudly proclaim my allegiance. -
Don Shula is already a chairman of the Miami Dolphins. Amazing how people never realize it.

I met him once and he was happy right until I told him I was a Dolphins fan. You could see the unpleasant memories written across his face. I don't see him wanting a part two. -
