It finally happened: Broken Bat Impales Player (Video) Tyler Colvin of the Chicago Cubs was impaled by a broken bat in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Chicago Cubs outfielder Tyler Colvin has been transported to a Miami hospital after being struck in the chest by a piece of a bat. Colvin was standing on third base in the second inning when part of Welington Castillo's bat punctured his chest during Sunday's game against the Florida Marlins. Castillo doubled on the play and Colvin scored, but was replaced in the field in the bottom half. A spokesman for the Cubs says Colvin is in stable condition and there was minimal external bleeding. I have watched the video, the bottom barrel end of the below shattered bat, stuck in Colvin's chest for a brief/split second as he was coming down the 3rd base line toward home plate, then it dislodged and fell to the ground, as Colvin paused, then continued toward the plate to score a run.
Cubs OF Tyler Colvin is expected to miss the rest of the season after a sliver of Welington Castillo's maple bat punctured his chest Sunday at Florida. A Cubs spokesman said Colvin was in stable condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital and is expected to remain there for the next few days for observation.
Not to be insensitive, but he's really going to miss the rest of the season. It didn't look that bad. Maybe I'm just a bad guy...Players are too soft now a days.
Glad the guy is alright. Thats just something that is going to happen. Getting hit by broken bat<Line drive off pitchers dome
Well there's only two weeks left in the season, the Cubs have nothing to play for and the main thing is the guy is laying in a hospital bed right now with a tube inserted into his chest to allow air in because doctors don't want his lung to collapse. So I think calling this player soft in his specific situation is completely wrong.
bats break all the time; rarely do they hit the players though. even rarer is people noticing that a baseball game is going on
Other players (and fans) have been hit by broken bats before getting cuts etc but nothing this serious.
This will bring to light the Maple vs. Ash Bat debate....the economics involved will also play a roll supply and demand and the already more expensive cost of Ash...but these Maple bats shattering into shards is a big concern. Ash seems to lessen the chance and risk of projectile weapons...but its a concern. I just dont know if the Players Union will even get behind the issue and simply say its an acceptable risk to the sport....lots of players use Maple for a reason. Giving them up hurts "potentially" that production, but more importantly that Maple Bat industry and in this economy that has to play a roll too I wager.
