I think he's not a bust, but he was a disappointment due to injuries. We definitely should have taken Matt Ryan, that much was obvious from about year three.

 

It's awful hard to call a 4-time Probowler and former All-Pro a bust. He might have had one of the best careers of any player from that draft if it weren't for injuries.

 

Nope Jake Long was the correct pick. Played at a HOF level for most of his rookie contract and then injuries ensued. Long was BPA, Matt Ryan is good but wasn't special in college and not in the pros either, and now he's 30. Had we been stupid and drafted Ryan, our team would have an average QB, and a bad defense just like them because Ryan wins you too many games typically to get top picks but not enough to get over the hump. Much happier with a younger, more talented Tannehill, whom we almost definitely wouldn't have gotten had we taken Ryan and not the BPA who lead us to one of the greatest season turnarounds in NFL history (remember how bad our oline was in the 1 win season, would have been funny to see him behind that line). So glad Ryan was never our problem, even if every single Dolfan disagrees. Parcells and Ireland drug us out of the cellar and added significant cornerstone pieces to the team we have today, for some reason the vast majority of Dolfans don't understand this. I do, and so do the Saints.

 

Jake Long was the correct pick in that draft, Ronnie Brown in 05 was not the correct pick...Dion Jordan in 13 was not the correct pick.

 

Long is being held together by duct tape and bailing wire, who cares where he ends up.

Liked the pick, loved his approach and wish the best for him, but do not care what team he ends up on.

It's short-sighted thinking like that which led us to our current state of perpetual mediocrity. In the NFL, you need a star QB to succeed. If Ryan hadn't panned out for us, we could have tried again with someone else, but the lack of drafting a QB in the first round is one of the reasons we've had so damned many starting QBs since Marino retired.
Now, we FINALLY drafted a QB in the first round and Tanneyhill is looking like he was worth it. No ****, it just took us about 12 years too long to break down and make the pick.

But that's the thing, Matty Ice is a good enough QB that you don't through him to the garbage heap and start over but not good enough to put a team on his shoulders.

 

Jake Long was absolutely not a bust as a Dolphin. He was one of the best LT's in the entire league until injuries prevented him from playing at the same level.

I never consider a player a bust if he simply wasn't able to remain a top tier player because he kept being injured. Dion Jordan is the type of individual I consider a bust. He had all the talent in the world to become one of the top defensive players in the league and he basically threw it away because he just didn't have the heart and desire to be the best.

Jordan is a bust. Long is a former great player who unfortunately suffered injuries which prevented him from remaining a great player for more than just a few years.

Football is a team game. If you don't have the protection up front, it's hard for any QB to look good, especially the likes of a Matty Average. I guess people forget just how bad our oline was in the 1 win season, trust me, I watched, it was pretty horrific. At least a guy like Tannehill has the speed/athleticism to game plan around a poor line though. Nice picks against the sheagles too smh. For a QB in his 30's, those are inexcusable.

Matt Ryan is over rated, that's the point (gold lol). We weren't ready for him, we completely sucked after 07 and needed a guy like Long to anchor the line. Had we drafted Ryan, we wouldn't be as good of a team today as we are and we wouln't have Tannehill and we wouldn't have made the playoffs in 08. And yes, being mobile helps when you have a crap oline. Ask Cam Newton who made the playoffs last year with complete scrubs at both tackle positions.

Regardless of how anyone feels about Tannehill, there is no argument to be made for Long over Ryan. If I jumped into a cespool just for the hell of it, and found some gold bricks while I was down there, it still doesn't nullify the fact that jumping into a cespool was a dumb move.

 

Jake Long can thank Tony Sparano for ending his career. During the fourth game of the 2010 preseason schematic genius Sparano decided to play his starting offense for the entire first half which is unheard of for the fourth preseason game. Jake Long took a helmet to the knee that shredded his mcl right before halftime.

The argument for taking Long was that he was more of a sure thing. Matt Ryan was more of a 50/50 shot. Even with hindsight, I'm not sure picking Ryan would have made a huge difference in the big picture of things. This isn't Brown over Rodgers.

 

It would have crippled us in the long run imo. Because Matty average is a good QB, just not that good (see Eagles picks). He can win games. But like in the NBA, sometimes being bad is better than being mediocre, and I doubt we land Tannehill if we take Ryan. And Tannehill's a lot more likely to get us a ring which is all I care about.

But that's only half of the story, because we had him playing hurt almost his entire last season with us. How can people forget our big LT out there in an arm sling, with a bum leg, knocking tight ends on their asses? He was screwed on pass plays because of the technique (doesn't play well to a guy only using one arm), but Jake Long was a superstar until our coaches decided that he was a better option playing hurt than any 2nd stringer on the roster. That's why he struggles today...not his level of talent or dedication. A player with a lesser work ethic would have rode the bench for that season and still be considered one of the top linemen in the game.

 

His statement was pretty ridiculous, he's talking about a QB with the most wins through his first 5 seasons in NFL history, twice he earned a 1st round playoff bye, with an NFC championship game appearance where he was 10 yards away from the Super Bowl. That's pretty far from mediocre. What makes what he said even dumber is the fact that we've actually been the very definition of mediocrity.
