I feel like if this guy came up through the Chiefs organization he'd be a star by now. Oh, well...hope he can stay healthy and be the guy we all imagine him being.
I will also commend Chris Grier. He's improved this roster since taking over. This team keeps collecting guys who are not only talented but also the types of players we're generally happy to root for. -

Seriously though, It's about darn time they started resigning/extending guys before they get to the contract year.
It's been ridiculous watching the way contracts have been handled in Miami, basically ensuring we wouldn't be able to keep guys we should.texanphinatic and Surfs Up 99 like this. -
I guess we'll find out soon enough what the details on the contract are. Grant is great as a return man, and I would presume that if the team is giving him an extension, they're satisfied that he's recovered from last season's injury. However, I don't ever want him to be relied on too heavily on offense. Little bits here and there as a change up is great, but I always want him to be no higher than the 4th WR.

I've loved him since day one and have been his biggest fan, but I'm kind of surprised he got the extension. He really is lightning in a bottle though and maybe he gets more touches this season!

I have a hard time getting down on any of our receivers production (well except Parker) given the garbage we've had at QB.
Once we do finally get it these guys will all look much better.
Glad they got it done!Surfs Up 99 likes this. -

I think Miami is in a situation where there are just too many mouths to feed. We're trying to spread the ball around between guys we know can play (i.e. Drake, Stills & Wilson) while at the same time we're asking for more out of the other guys like Grant, Parker and Gesicki.
You can't have 4 WRs all getting exceptional production. If either of those last 3 had a big year I'd be pretty happy. I'd rather have 1 of those 3 be a stand-out than have all 3 be *meh* kind of players. So I'm hoping either Grant or Gesicki does something special this year.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and now we're worried about Preston Williams hopping into the mix as well!Last edited: Aug 21, 2019 -

One way of looking at is 2.6% of his returns go for TDs and 11.8% of his receptions go for TDs.
I haven’t looked at league averages but my gut feeling is that his productivity, when he is given the ball, is elite. There are good reasons why he hasn’t had so many touches as a receiver, but we only need to target him 3 or 4 times a game to force opposing Ds to spend considerable time scheming how to stop him.resnor, KeyFin and Surfs Up 99 like this. -

"This approach by the Dolphins front office is a continuation of the approach they took with Xavien Howard. It is a deliberate effort to “take care” of their own before the temptation of greener pastures ever enters the mind of their young talent...
...If one thrives on the field, the Dolphins appear eager and willing to lock players in. Building through the draft requires this level of commitment to the vision the Dolphins initially had in their players. And it’s a big step in the right direction for the franchise."
I hope this general (common sense) approach is true, but they failed to do this with JaWuan James two years ago. I can only hope that was Tannenbaum's doing and not Grier's, or at the very least, if it was Grier, that he's learned from his mistakes.

With the rising salary cap, this isn't a big contract by any means. I think it also means they have plans to get Grant more involved in the offense. Few teams can cover him deep with just one guy so he also creates opportunities for others when he is on the field.
I wish this forward thinking had been applied to the OL. -
The way I see it, Grant + a few yards of space = TD almost every time. And since he led the league in time to separation last year (him and Wilson both), he usually has that few yards of space. Will he ever be the guy who's targeted 20 passes a game? Probably not. But I see big things in his future and its only a matter of time before he has his 1st 3 TD day.resnor, Tin Indian and Dol-Fan Dupree like this. -

Here's the rundown of Grant's total contract now:
2019: 1.36m cap hit
2020: 4.38m cap hit / 2.40m dead money hit
2021: 4.75m cap hit / 1.80m dead money hit
2022: 4.90m cap hit / 1.20m dead money hit
2023: 5.07m cap hit / 0.60m dead money hit
So, he's a well paid return man and deep ball guy on a team that has a crapton of cap room to play with the next few years. However, there's never a point where the team can't simply decide to walk away from him pretty painlessly if they choose to as well. Not bad for the club.KeyFin likes this. -
