This is a shame, once again a high pick is wasted a former #1! It pays for us to look at wonderlic scores as I beleive his was around 16 which is below average. More Player News Jason Allen-DB- Dolphins Apr. 29 - 4:13 pm et Dolphins 2006 first-round pick Jason Allen will be on the roster bubble in training camp. The Nick Saban pick appears buried on the CB depth chart behind Will Allen, Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, and Eric Green. The Fins might shop him for a future seventh-round pick this summer, but he'll probably end up getting cut. Source: Miami Herald www.rotoworld.com
Sucks. I don't know if he just flat out stunk, or if he was never stabilized in a position long enough to produce.
He has to be worth more than a 7th round pick. I realize the guy rarely makes it on the field, but with the exception of one rough game against Randy Moss (in which he made a nice play resulting in an interception) he's been a serviceable player. Not to mention he's been solid on Special Teams.
Dan Marino's wonderlic score was around a 16. Many other successful players have had similar scores. Some guys who never amounted to a thing had wonderlic scores in the 40s. IMO, there is no direct correlation between Allen's score and his early struggles in the league. As for his being on the bubble, we'll probably keep 4 safeties and 5 corners. At safety, Bell, Wilson, Clemons and Culver look pretty much set, though perhaps Kilmer or Bryan could unseat Culver, the odds would seem against it. He played pretty good as a reserve last year. At corner, the only locks IMO barring some dramatic development, are our two draftees and W.Allen. That leaves Green, J.Allen, Jones, Thomas, Babers and Billingsley to compete for two remaining corner spots. IMO, that's not an extreme uphill battle for Jason. He may fit in very well as a cover 4 corner if we just leave him there and let him compete. He'll have a lot less to think about that way and can just go play.
Here is Allen's problem. Allen will need to have a good preseason to stick. He will need to show that he can be taught. Allen's essentially competing with Green and Joey Thomas, even though I believe Green is likely to start Week 1. That said, our 5th corner could currently be on someone else's roster. I think Culver is the third guy at safety, as he really starting coming on down the stretch last year. The competition for the nickel/dime positions will be interesting.
We should thank Nickator for drafting and Ronnie for running over JA in college. He just wasn't the same afterwards.
third season. time to fish or cut bait. going to be tremendous competition in the defensive backfield this year.
I know he isnt the best player but i would think he'd be worth SOMETHING more than a 7th. A 5th or more likely a 6th? I mean i know he's been dissapointing but he has come up with some big interceptions.
Well it would not surprise me if he were to get cut. It sucks seeing a first rounder fail for the phins, hope he is the last. Would like to get something for him though.
If Jason Allen is released or even if he is traded for a late round draft pick it puts an esclamation mark on the sad state that the Dolphins draft has been in since before Parcells arrived. Its really sad that any team would go through the struggles the Dolphins have had with the draft. So many wasted draft picks and so many missing pieces. Before last year how long had it been since we had a full draft compliment?
Just the fact that he has played both corner and safety and plays special teams should be worth a roster spot.
