Really difficult to see why the Dolphins would do this.

What would be the rationale behind this? We don't have enough veteran backups to Ryan Tannehill already? We're going to trade in David Garrard for Tarvaris Jackson? Is Tarvaris Jackson the targeted long term backup to Ryan Tannehill?

Maybe they really do have a suitor for Matt Moore. Who knows?
Maybe Jason Cole is talking out his ***.
Don't we have someone on here who is personal friends with Jason? Might he be able to procure an explanation? -
Was really hoping the thread title ended in Mike Wallace

Sounds like our name is being used for agent/club purposes, might be worth checking on who his agent is. Makes zero sense otherwise. It's entirely feasible in the quid pro quo world of reporting that Cole will tweet some team names in exchange for some brownie points with an agent or club.

IIRC Joel Segal is Jackson's agent

It's Matt Moore, Reggie Bush, Devon Bess and a 4th for Earl Thomas and Jackson

It's possible that this official announcement with Tannehill and Moore is just setting off a big string of events though. Very possible.
Matt Moore has backers in this league. There were all kinds of coaches out there and front office executives that were all too willing to give quotes to the newspapers anonymously about how good Matt Moore is and how underrated he is in Miami, prior to OTAs/Mini Camp/Training Camp/Preseason. Barry Jackson had several quotes to that effect and I've seen others in other national publications.
Perhaps Ryan Tannehill officially taking the job from Moore has Jeff Ireland thinking he's got to exchange Moore for a wide receiver. But with Garrard injured, the only way he can do that would be if he pulled in another quarterback that they're comfortable with as a backup to Tannehill. I don't think they'd be comfortable tabbing Devlin for that.
Potential suitors for Matt Moore that come to mind would be:
1. Green Bay
2. Denver
3. Kansas City
4. Minnesota
5. San Diego
The reason I add Minnesota and San Diego is because they're also sniffing at Tarvaris Jackson which IMO puts them in line for a potential Moore trade as well. So let's speculate that we try and trade Moore to one of these teams. Which wide receiver would we be targeting in return?
1. Green Bay - James Jones?
2. Denver - Andre Caldwell/Jason Hill?
3. Kansas City - Dwayne Bowe?
4. San Diego - None (with Vincent Brown breaking his ankle, they can't afford to give any up)
5. Minnesota - Percy Harvin/Devin Aromashodu/Stephen Burton/Emmanuel Arceneaux?
Keep in mind...Miami has an extra 3rd round Draft pick in 2013 due to the Brandon Marshall trade. So for guys like Percy Harvin or Dwayne Bowe it isn't like we would just be trading them Matt Moore straight up.Mexphin, Ohio Fanatic, Tone_E and 2 others like this. -
What is more interesting to me is the named teams in search of a backup Qb.
MMoore to SD makes a lot of sense and we have a trade history with them.
As does MMoore to KC with Daboll having a history with him.
Wouldn't mind seeing if Larry English was on the market.Bpk likes this. -

Something to consider is Seattles WR corps Rice has been sidelined, Tate had a injury plagued season last seaon but is healthy now, Baldwin tweaked a hammy earlier in the preseason, You have TO and Braylon Edwards. They are in need of some WRs. We may have 4s, 5s and 6s but we have them they do not. There top guys have injury issues and they have no depth. I can see us trading some WRs
-
If you can get Percy Harvin for Matt Moore, yes. Even if he is a diva.
-
I can't imagine Miami trading for Jackson's $4 million contract. Like Moore and Garrard, he's also a free agent after the season.
A lot can happen in a short amount of time, but I can't see the Dolphins being without both Moore and Garrard on Saturday, and then trading for Jackson?
He's an athletic WCO guy, but what else? Just seems like dealing for the sake of dealing. I don't know about you guys, but being one snap away from Pat Devlin and/or a new acquisition scares me. I don't buy Cole's report.
For old time sake, it'd be hilarious to see us discard two known, capable entities for someone else's third stringer, pay him more than the last two guys and compensate that team for the privilege.
Seriously though, everybody laudes how good that quarterback room is. Why break up the band?
Assuming Garrard makes it back, I do expect Moore to be dealt at some point. -
Percy Harvin is one more migraine from being done for his career. Between those and his nagging little injuries, Harvin is a not a good fit.
-
RE: Jackson..he does have experience in a WCO (Minny and Seattle) where neither Moore and Garrard really do. Obviously Moore isnt inspiring confidence. Jackson is also younger and maybe viewed as a better long term option as a backup then Moore or Garrard.
I cant see Minny dealing Harvin because even though he wants his new contract they have poop at wr aside from him and Simpson. Ditto for KC and Bowe and KC actually has a chance to win that division as just getting Berry, Charles and Moeaki back from ACL tears will help them immensely. Though KC does have Daboll so from that perspective I cant totally dismiss it.
The Jets (sparano) make some sense but not sure we'd get more then a draft pick back. Arizona makes some sense as well from the perspective that their QB situation is quite possibly the worst in the league aside from NYJ..maybe we get Doucet or Andre Roberts back since they are very deep at wr. Cleveland (Colt McCoy and Josh Cribbs?) could be in play. -
I hope not. TJack is awful.
-
I think the Dolphins will be lucky to get a 6th or 7th round selection for Moore. He isn't going to be anything but a backup on any other NFL team and backups aren't traded for top tier players or high draft picks.
In fact the Dolphins should jump at any trade offering a sixth round selection, because if they don't take it, they may end up getting nothing in return and having to cut Moore to reach the 53 man limit. -
A decision will have to be made on Gerrard soon and perhaps they are exploring alternatives should it be decided that Gerrards injury will keep him out for a substantial number of games .Due dilligence if you will
-
Well, Mike Vick just went to the locker room after a hit in the NE game. With Kafka out, and if Vick ends up being seriously injured, they could emerge as a partner for Moore as well.
-
IMO this (if true) indicates that either Garrard's injury is bad enough that his return is in question or they're admitting/realizing that Moore is just a bad fit for this offense/ isn't going to be happy as the second or third string guy. Or it's both of those reasons. I don't see GB as a suitor b/c he'll be just as bad of a fit there. But Moore is a good QB. I think if you put him in SD or Minny he can be just fine.
-
but vicks injury doesn't look horribly bad -

I was not a fan of MM last year,he played "ok" at times imo , nothing to make me not want to upgrade in the off season. It also depends on what we get for MM , that would have to be factored in and they may still feel DG is in the plans. We aren't a playoff team ( imo ) and I don't think MM is in the plans next year , when he can walk away for nothing. -
Moore > Jackson.
Seems like a counterproductive move. -
Makes no sense. I'd rather have Devlin be our #2 than TJack. You know, when we traded Marshall back in February/March and then didn't draft a receiver until the 6th round, I figured Ireland must have something up his sleeve. But obviously that didn't happen. I mean if he knew back then that a wide receiver he targeted could be had, he'd have made that deal by now. If by chance a trade should happen at this stage, it'd be for a veteran who is familiar with the offense.
