im pretty sure mangini is hoping for this scenario, otherwise, they're gonna be in cap trouble for sure.

Weren't the Jets like second worst prior to acquiring Favre?

The Jets will be releasing at least one guy who makes a considerable amount of money before the season begins (CB David Barrett -- if he isn't cut, I and 99% of Jets Nation would be shocked). Barrett's 2008 salary is $3.6 million and he isn't a starter.

Also, doesn't the cap # rise a couple of million again next season?

David Barrett?

Solid at giving 15-20 yards of cushion to the receiver and a solid back-up, but thats it. He's good at the deep ball, thats all he really brings to the table. Hardly worth $3.6 million a year when the Jets have some young talent at the Cornerback position.

Justin Miller
Dwight Lowery
Hank Poteat
Drew Coleman
Ahmad Carroll
David Barrett

Those are the main seven competiting for the 5 Cornerback slots. Revis, Lowery & Miller are locks and Barrett shouldn't be coming back for $3.6 million to back-up. They really like Poteat and he's very close to being a lock and I just see them giving the 5th Cornerback job to a younger player in Carroll or Coleman (Coleman's a 3rd year player this year as well in the Jets' system).

I think it ends up Coleman. Carroll is too much trouble. He struggled on the field and off the field.

What I was saying is:
The Jets might be OK for this year, and that's fine for the short term of things.They seemed to "buy" many FA's to try and get that elusive ring and it might backfire.I'm just wondering where this will put them in the future.
I'm no expert when it comes to the number crunching,but it seems to me if it does'nt happen now.The Jets are(and will) be in serious trouble in the next few years.

AS of 8/4, the Jets were $6.77 million under. Release of Pennington saved, I believe, $6 million. That's $12.77 million under and enough to accomodate Farve's $12 million salary for 2008

CB David Barrett also took a pay cut of $1.2 million to provide more cap relief

The Jets have one of the best cap managers in the league in charge of their FO, I am not worried at all. The Phins have Parcells in charge of theirs, I would hope he has nothing to do with your cap if I were you.

He wasn't a capologist in NY either, but it didn't stop him from making personnel moves with wild abandon that put us in cap hell for almost a decade. Shortly before he scurried out of town.
