I saw this but I wonder if bland defensive schemes will work well with the Tampa 2..... I like Bates but it was the most vanilla defense when he was here.

IMO this was a bad move by the Bucs.

 

The Tampa 2 is ultimately as bland, if not more bland than what Bates was doing here.

In fact, when Bates took over as interim HC, he changed the defense. We stopped trying to treat Jeff Zgonina and Brian Robinson like they were 350+ pound 2-gap DTs like Larry Chester and Tim Bowens,and ran a more 1-gap oriented scheme with more blitzing.

 

I like the move.

Jim Bates is similar to Sparano in that they emphasize good technique and discipline. I see nothing wrong in beating someone because you executed a simple plan better than they executed their complex plan.

 

Incorrect. Wanny was bland. It's well known he interfered with the offense and defense to keep it vanilla. As soon as Wanny was fired Bates brought changes to that defense the very next day.

 

I moved this to other nfl.. bates is not a Dolphin anymore, his respect comes in this forum now.

 

I miss Jim Bates. I thought he should have been given the HC nod over Saban. I mean, come on, we beat the Patriots on Monday Night Football with AJ Feely at QB while wearing those god awful orange jerseys. He deserved some respect.
