Anyone else think that Gruden is a Dolphin fan? His comments in the game were clearly on the side of the Dolphins. and all of his comments were logical too. It's a shame he can't be our next coach. You can tell that he has a passion for this team.

i thought he was leaning towards the Dolphins a bit also...
-
He was a little cagey with the the ESPN contract extension conversations with his co commentators.
I dont think he is closing the door to other opportunities.
BTW He did mention that Luck may decide to stay at Stanford. -
Whether Luck comes out or not. Landry Jones and a regime change is still an attractive option. Its not Luck or nothing folks.

If I had to put a number on it, I'd probably say it's 90/10 that he enters the draft. -

The commentators had to talk up the Dolphins.
They had to give them credit so people stayed tuned in. Lead people to believe that the Dolphins could come back to make it a game. We as Dolphins fans knew better and it was torturous to keep watching. -

I think Gruden wants to be the HC of the Phins next season. The contract he signed with ESPN was smart on his part, because...you never know with Ross. He's already proven to be wishywashy with his pursuit of Harbaugh last season. I think Gruden is just making sure he has all of his options available to him. From what I understand....once he starts the new contract next season...he has to finish it out. But he has from Jan on to look at his HC options.
Further more....you know what I would do if I were Ross.
Id fire Sparano today, and bring in someone to be the interim HC for just this season. Not so much to win games, but to reestablish a culture of excellence that has been missing for a long, long time. Actually...missing since he was unceremoniously replaced. Thus bringing him back would reverse that curse. Im talking Don Shula. I think it would be great for the young players on the team to be around him for the rest of the season. He obviously wouldnt want to coach any more then that...but I think it sends a message to the fans, and to the team. The change starts now. A new coach like Gruden will be hired....but to lay a solid foundation, to restore some dignity, and pride. Why not let Shula take this ship to port, and do in in an honorable way. -
Based on last nights performance.....Gruden knows his price just went way up. talk about leverage!

Really, you guys think that Standford has a shot for the BCS championship title with those players they got? They will never get that shot. Just scratch that off. Plus, after graduating with a degree, what classes is he going to take during his final year of eligibility?

I have no idea who the next Dolphin coach will be and I have questions about every candidate that's been brought up. But if I had to say which candidate I thought was the most likely hire, I would say Gruden. I think he fits what Ross wants in terms of star power, resume and likelihood of having an exciting and/or innovative offense. And I think he's young enough that he's likely to want to re-enter the coaching ranks again.

Gruden has a past with David Shaw, Stanford's new Head Coach now that Harbaugh is gone. I have no doubt that Shaw would love very much for Andrew Luck to stay for his 5th year of eligibility. But Andrew Luck himself has indicated multiple times that he's heading into this season with the mindset that it is his last as a Stanford Cardinal. That doesn't mean he can't change his mind, of course. But I don't see what the motivation would be for Luck to change his mind and stay in school another year. He's always said that he wants to come out of Stanford with his degree in hand, and that is why he stayed in school this year. But he's getting his degree now...so why would he stay another year? Maybe to start working on his Masters, but unless he can finish it then that doesn't make much sense to me.
As for Jon Gruden's new contract with ESPN, I think this was a power play by ESPN. I notice the new terms of the contract don't kick in until after the 2012 season starts. Whatever language they may have negotiated into the contract to try and discourage him from leaving for a coaching job, doesn't kick in until AFTER he makes the decision this off season on whether to get back into coaching or not. My guess is ESPN knows that there's a decision looming this off season, and what they're trying to do is lock him up IF he decides to turn down the Dolphins and any other team this off season, so that they're not constantly playing the "Will he, won't he" game every off season. If he stays in broadcasting after this off season, then he stays with ESPN for 5 years. Monday Night Football is big, big money...and he's the star of Monday Night Football (it sure isn't Jaws or Tirico). They can't keep having that kind of uncertainty every year.PhinPhanatic, sws84 and PhinGeneral like this. -
My first choice for the next Dolphin head coach is Cowher. Gruden would be my second choice if Cowher takes another coaching job or decides to stay in the broadcast booth. I think if Gruden actually wants to get back into coaching, Ross would certainly be willing to make him an offer it would be very difficult to turn down. The main question with both Cowher and Gruden is, do either of them really want to get back into coaching again? They are both making quite a bit of money doing what they are doing right now and perhaps they just don't want to deal with the constant grind of being an NFL head coach again. Time will tell.

Luck has more to lose by going back than he does to win by coming out. He is at the pinnacle right now as the number one quarterback in college football and with the highest probability of being drafted #1. He could go back for one more year and risk an injury to end his career or to diminish his draft status. He would also risk maybe having a less than stellar final year, much like Marino did at Pitt , or some other quarterback having a great season and becoming the next best thing. In either event his draft status could slide and he would loose the status and money of the #1 draft choice. Would he risk that by going back for one more year?
