We need to get a RB that can pound the ball and punish defenders. One that can get consistent positive yards. I've watched Carey his whole career and he is that guy. I haven't been so sure on a player since Gronkowski and Foles. Carey will be a beast in the NFL no doubt about it. I am a UofA homer for sure but I know a dynamic player when I see one. Just as I said with Gronk and Foles. Carey is going to make some offense in the NFL much more productive. That you can be sure of.

The only problem is we have plenty of other needs and positions to fill. Is he worth our #2 pick? Most people here probably don't know too much about his game but if they did I think most would say it would be a worth while pick. What does everyone think about Carey for our 2nd pick?

I am all for having better playmakers in the backfield. I just hope whoever we take with our second round pick actually becomes a decent player.

Nothing very impressive about him in terms of the underwear olympics. I haven't watched any tape but I would think 2nd round would be a huge reach for him.

Some draft "experts" don't even feel he should be drafted.

Wow. The 4.7 forty for a small guy sure doesn't get me all excited.

You were sure about Foles? The Eagles weren't even sure about Foles.

Search my posts...said he would rival Luck if not be better. I watch all my UofA games, hardcore fan. Carey isn't a standout on paper as far as combine times but look at his #'s in production over the last two years. He is pure BEAST! Believe me he is an amazing runner and athlete. His burst and strength are top notch. He just lacks a second gear so to speak. If he had the same #'s playing for lets say Alabama or Florida, he'd have peeps clamoring left and right. UofA and Pac-12 players rarely get any love. He is a great second coming of MJD imo, just more agile. He is seriously like a cat on his feet.

Now as for his of the field issues, it was once and charges were ultimately dropped. The guy grew up in my home town, went to my high school and from what I know is a pretty good guy. I work for the University of Arizona and have seen him in passing a few times. Said whats up to him more than once and he seemed pretty humble. For me, I don't question his work ethic or any off the field issues.

He definitely wouldn't be a reach at #50. Any team that gets him outside the 1st rd will get a huge score imo. If you can find game film on him you will see what I'm saying. A lot of scouts are pretty high on Ka'Deem and any one I know who has seen him play over the years has echoed said the same things I say.

Compare Carey's production among the top RB prospects from previous years, one can see Carey is rivaled by none. Most of all he gets in the endzone. He has 44 TD's and over 4,300 yrds from scrimmage in the last two years. The guy produces plain and simple. That is also in a offense where teams know he is target #1. In an offense that lacks talent or many NFL caliber players. Like I said, if he'd played for a major college football program he'd be a star. God only knows what damage he'd have done in an offense with talented lineman or a supporting cast. Either way his production is top notch.

Agree. Would rather have Hyde or Hill before him if we're looking for a short yardage back, and Mason or Seastrunk before them all.

Idk...I guess unless you have scouts and media politics blowing you up you aren't impressive. I see him in game film and he looks plenty impressive to me. Guy makes plays. Runs people over, strong cut backs, good hands, great field vision and like I said always finds the endzone. He is rarely tackled by one person and is hard to get off his feet. There are few weaknesses in his game.

    Disagree.

I see him as small, slow and weak. A guy who won't make it against NFL caliber defenses.

Production #s are actually the worst indicator of NFL success for a HB so the gaudy numbers mean nothing to me.

Well from the video he isn't afraid to turn around and use his "back" this is something I have watched all our young runners do and it drives me crazy! Wtf is up with this? Surely they are not being coached to do this?!? Someone is going to end up with a serious spinal chord injury.

STRENGTHS: Muscled-up athlete with good instincts, light feet, good leg drive and the determination to handle a featured role as a team's primary runner in the NFL. Good recognition of the hole, showing the burst to and through gaps to take advantage when the avenue is clear. Also possesses the vision to recognize cut-back lanes and the jump-cut ability to quickly re-direct. Accelerates smoothly, showing enough speed to break into open field for long-gains. Sets up safeties with subtle shoulder-fakes to make defenders miss while operating at full-speed. Became a much tougher, more determined runner in 2013, taking on would-be tacklers with a full head of steam and driving his legs through contact. Repeatedly lunges forward, spinning as necessary to fight through hits and generate impressive yards after the contact. Recognizes where the sticks are and shows rare determination in fighting to reach the marker. Improved maturity is also evident in his pass protection, where Carey ranks among the best in the class. Good awareness to locate blitzing defenders. Squares his shoulders and delivers a forceful blow or effective cut-block. Possesses soft hands to gather in passes and secures the ball quickly.
WEAKNESSES: While Carey's determined running is commendable he has to know when to go down, too often exposing himself and the ball to unnecessary hits by lunging forward and too often leaving his feet. Does not possess elite breakaway speed. Success comes in Rich Rodriguez's offense which has led to others enjoying great success that hasn't translated into NFL production... NFL teams will want to do a thorough investigation into Carey's character after several reported run-ins with authorities during his collegiate career. The most well-documented of them was a disorderly conduct and assault charge against his ex-girlfriend (who was pregnant at the time), which ultimately was dropped.

COMPARES TO: Ahmad Bradshaw, Indianapolis Colts - Recurring injuries have robbed Bradshaw (5-10, 215) of a once-promising career and it is important to note that Carey did not miss a game due to injury at Arizona. Further, Carey possesses more lateral agility and "wow" potential than Bradshaw. However, it was the physicality and grit with which he ran in 2013 that have become trademark traits for the former Wildcat. Bradshaw showed plenty of both (as well as reliability on third down) which helped him star as the leading rusher on two separate runs to the Super Bowl by the New York Giants.

Worked out for that Peterson guy in Minnesota. (747) my opinion is that running backs don't last long anyway. I just want to pick up 3rd and 1 goddammit!

Although I think hill becomes the starter by week 6 if we take him.

Seastrunk is right there with Sankey. The only questionable thing about Seastrunk is his toughness. Seems to not try to fight for yardage, much like Miller.

Carey had a slightly better pro day as far as times but like I said it's hard to look at his combine performance and gauge his talent. Here are some more notes on Carey.

02/20/2014 - 2014 NFL Draft Scout Pre-Combine Top 64 Prospects: 41.*Ka'Deem Carey, RB, Arizona, 5-10, 207, 4.53, 2...More determined than deceptive, Carey led the nation with 1,929 rushing yards in 2012, then came back bigger and stronger last year to push his streak of 100-yards rushing to 16 games, the most for any FBS player in ten years. Averaged 157.1 yards a game at 5.4 a carry in 2013. Strength is his strength, along with excellent vision and the ability to make blink-quick cuts. Lacks elite straight-line speed, but never runs a straight line anyway. - Frank Cooney, The Sports Xchange

Ka'Deem Carey is a very good running back prospect. Aside from Draft Tek (which put more stock into the NFL Combine than most others, by my experience), he's slated to be a prospect somewhere in the 40-50 range by most accounts. That would put him squarely into the second round range. I don't think he goes there, I think he's more in line for a third round range simply because of supply and demand for RBs in this draft.
If he is in that third round area, he should absolutely warrant consideration from the Giants. He is the type of playmaker that fits exceptionally well into what McAdoo wants to do with the screen game. A pro comparison? I'd say the skill set and frame remind me a bit of Arian Foster -By Invictus XI @KSIXI on Mar 9 2014, 12:00p

The only other RB prospects I like much at all are Bishop Sankey and Charles Sims. I think they are solid all round backs with good promise. I just wonder how this regime plans on addressing the RB situation

Pac-12 defenses are generally quick and cover ground. They aren't typically the strongest but Carey has shown he can break down defenders. From what I have read the team is looking to draft a RB in the 2nd or 3rd rd if a good prospect becomes available. I'd like to know who they have their eye on

Personally I think Williams is nothing special but who am I to say. I just know Carey's game and imo it is top level in this RB class

Hill from LSU, Tre Mason from Auburn fit what I personally think was missing last year. Seastrunk and Sankey may be prospects they like.

Well, there was this piece from Omar and I read another saying Hickey would likely draft a RB in rds 2-4. Can't find it right now but yeh......that's just what I gathered from reading these guy's articles.

By Omar Kelly South Florida Sun Sentinel 8:02 a.m. EDT, March 16, 2014

    March 14
Q: Since the Dolphins keep passing on tailbacks in free agency, how much competition will they have for the rookie runner they want in the NFL draft? - Edward, Miami
A: I told you two weeks ago I was INFORMED that Dennis Hickey has his eye on some tailbacks in the 2014 NFL draft class, and that Miami didn't intend on sign a free agent runner unless a favorable deal fell into their lap. While LaGarrette Blount, Knowshon Moreno and Maurice Jones Drew are still available, it appears that Miami has little more than lukewarm interest in each veteran, who fits the mold of the all-purpose back the Dolphins would benefit from. Fortunately for Miami, Ben Tate's two-year, $7 million deal with the Browns takes Cleveland off the market for a starting tailback. That means the odds of some team selecting one of this draft classes elite backs in the first round are slim. However, there's a long list of teams that could target Ohio State's Carlos Hyde, Arizona's Ka'Deem Carey, Auburn's Tre Mason, Washington's Bishop Sankey in the second round. The Ravens, Raiders, Falcons, Rams, Texans, Bears, Jaguars, Broncos and Titans all keep Miami company as NFL teams that need tailbacks moving forward. If one of those teams signs, or re-signs a veteran back, or acquires Chris Johnson, then they'll come off that list. But FOR NOW the Dolphins must be concerned about one of these nine teams using a first or second-round pick on the tier one rookie runner Hickey has his eyes on. And my money says that player is Hyde. Doug Martin, whom the Buccaneers selected 31st overall in the 2012 draft, is the model of the tailback we can assume Hickey is using. Martin, who is 5-foot-9, 223 pounds, rushed for 3,431 yards and scored 43 touchdowns during his four seasons at Boise State. At the NFL combine Martin ran a 4.46 in the 40-yards dash, was clocked at 6.79 in the 3-cone drill, had a 36 inch vertical jump and 10 foot broad jump, and bench pressed 225-pounds 28 times. That means he's got power, size and speed, just like Hyde. But Tampa Bay also used a sixth-round pick in 2013 to select former UM player Mike James, and he averaged 4.9 yards per attempt on his 60 carries before suffering a season-ending injury. So maybe Hickey doesn't have to use an early pick to find someone who could challenge Daniel Thomas for playing time, and Lamar Miller for the starting spot.

First question Philbin and Tannehill are going to ask - What is his pass blocking like?

Pass blocking wasn't a huge problem for our backs last year. There were some mistakes, sure, but those may have been more due to the calls played than the actual pass protection from our backs. Check the PFF ratings on PBE with respect to our tailbacks and you'll see they weren't as awful as they were made out to be. Our biggest problem was picking up first downs through short yardage situations.

Well, Carey is great at picking up blitzers and loves contact so that's not a problem. As far as short yardage situations go, he has been pretty solid over his time at UofA. His excellent vision and strength allow him to prevail in short yardage situations more often than not

I liked Ka'Deem in college a lot, but yes he has taken a pounding in college with all of his carries. I hope he does pan out in the NFL, but I can't see us or anyone else taking him in the first 2 rounds. To the OP, you definitely sound like a UofA homer ha.

If we draft any RB besides mason or seastrunk before the 3rd round I'd be pissed.

I don't think any other back offers anything that a back you can draft in the 5-6 round doesn't have

Yes, I am a huge UofA homer lol! I only back one of the players if their worthy of it though. Carey has put in a lot of work in the last two years but he's always stayed healthy to this point. I find such mixed opinions on him in scouting reports. I guess unless you've been around to see him play, you just aren't as big on him

Residing here in AZ, Carey is a stud. A workhorse. A playmaker. Tough. Should have damn well been invited for the Heismans! But east coast bias aside....blah

Oh and I'm a Sun Devil Alum making these comments about a player from the uofeghh. The issue with Carey isn't talent. That he's got. It's that he's been around 350 carries each year of college! This guy already has a ton of wear and tear on them tires. That's the only issue.

It's amazing that he can walk with the carries he had in college and the pros.

Nope, but dude can pass block really well and run people over. And he did amazing against weak competition, and decent against decent competition. He had 149 yards against FSU and averaged 5.3 a carry, and I'd say that's pretty good against FSU. The games that you say he played poorly in were the games he had the fewest amount of carries in.
