The Dolphins signed free agent cornerback Kendall Sheffield, the team announced Monday. Sheffield, 28, played six games for the Jets last season, seeing action on 92 defensive snaps and 48 on special teams. He made nine tackles. Sheffield has appeared in 49 career games with 20 starts with Atlanta (2019-21), San Francisco (2023), Tennessee (2023) and the Jets (2024). He has totaled 108 tackles, six passes defensed and two forced fumbles in his career, along with six special teams tackles. Sheffield also spent time on the practice squad with Dallas in 2022. He entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick of the Falcons in 2019.
We need help at the position, there's no question. But along with zero career INTs, Sheffield last had a pass defensed back in 2020, and in 49 career games only has six of those. He suffered a hamstring injury in camp in 2021 that he's apparently never really recovered from, playing in just 20 total games since then, and barely appearing on any stat sheet. In fact, since the end of the 2020 season, he's only played more than 25% of the snaps on defense in any game three times. So while you can't count him out given the need at the position, he's still a long shot to make a positive impact.
C'mon man you gotta just trust Grier. He's sending a message to Ramsey that we don't need him to be successful.
The only good thing I can say about this signing is that I hail from Sheffield, UK, so it might be fun to get a Dolphins jersey with 'Sheffield' on the back.
