"A source close to Alonso tells The Miami Herald (me) that Alonso doesn’t want to move from the middle linebacker spot in 2017. He enjoys playing middle linebacker the most and believes that’s his spot, the source said. Alonso, by the way, has on separate occasions also told me he prefers to play middle linebacker but would consider doing whatever was best for the team.
The idea of moving Alonso is not a new one. I reported in January the team debated moving Alonso to the weakside linebacker spot during the season when the linebacker corps was beset by multiple injuries and playing Mike Hull in the middle and Alonso at weakside seemed a plausible solution.
Ultimately, the Dolphins decided against that option so as to not mess with Alonso’s head. But sources told The Herald (me) the topic would be revisited this offseason as part of an overall strategy to upgrade the linebacker corps.
Except none of that took Alonso’s opinion into account.
And now we understand his opinion is that he wants to remain at middle linebacker."

I don't think Alonso's opinion matters that much. He ain't exactly a field general, nor does he have the weight to throw around on this matter.

Alonso is better at Weakside. I understand he wants to stay in the middle since he is playing for his next contract and there is more money available for middle linebackers as opposed to Weakside linebackers but moving him to the weak side and getting a better MLB is what's best for the team.

I agree. Even though it may sound cliche, Alonso should do what's best for the team. If he's at his best at the Weakside, then he should keep his head down and play there.RealDolphinsFan2 likes this.

Is this a negotiation tactic? You can move me to Weakside LB, but I need to be paid like a MLB? I doubt there is that much of a gap in pay, so just get the man signed -too many other spots need filled to drag this out.

I think, that with the right players around him, he can actually be an excellent WLB now that he's proven that he's healthy. He was quite the playmaker for us last season at times. We just shouldn't be counting on him to be our best LB, or to overcome the mistakes and bad play of the DL in front of him. He's a solid role player.

He has shown enough to show me that he can be a starter. I think that maybe his instincts are a bit off, or at least, off in this system.
I don't think he can be relied heavily upon to take the pounding of a full season at a MLB spot in this scheme. But maybe with a space-eater up front, he could play clean up here and there.
My biggest issue with him, at times, his instincts were just off. He doesn't mind sticking his nose in there and he's fast enough. Feast or famine-type player.
He's a keeper for me, but I hope he can continue progressing and getting better at his reads. -
Kiko Alonso just isn't an MLB. But assuming we play 4-3 under, it won't matter. Whatever the case, I'm team get more talent at LB regardless of where they play.
