After watching him play this season...and the replays of his 2012 season, Im starting to get really excited for what we might have in Lamar Miller. He reminds me of Curtis Martin, in that he never really seems to present a large target to hit. He seems to squeeze through holes..and has a very good ability to make a cut and get to the second level. It would be interesting to see how many of his runs actually did hit the second level. The thing about him...is, once he gets to the second level, he looks like he can house it. Yes, I am prone to hyperbole, I raved about Ryan Tannehill, I really thought Clyde Gates was gonna be a star in the making, and I was one of Chad Henne's band wagon mates...so, calling them as I see them, eh....hasnt worked out so well. Miller has me biting my nails in nervous optimism though. Is this a potential MVP candidate? If healthy...could he lead the league in rushing? Anyways...what do you think his upside is? Are we maybe looking at the possible next Miami Dolphin stud running back ala, Csonka, Mercury Morris, and Ricky Williams?
I'm not prone to hyperbole. I love RT's potential, but I always maintained that Henne was not a franchise QB, never thought much of Gates. IMO Miller can be a Clinton Portis level back. Now Portis IIRC put up some big statistical seasons, but I'm referring to their similar ability level, not stats. In our offense, I think he can be a more consistent, more every down version of Reggie Bush. So picture that 1000 or so yards without all of those maddening plays that lost yardage mixed in.
I love the kids vision i like that he finds the small opening at the end of his runs for a few more yards and that he lowers his pad level and will deliver a hit to get the extra one or two more. Love the explosiveness and over all speed, if he learns the book and with good blocking the kid can be one of most dangerous backs in the league. I wasn't excited about the pick but i gotta say i love the pick now. Lets hope he continues to grow and learn.
I think Miller CAN be really good. But next season(as of this second) is really making me nervous. At this point we don't know what we have at QB, RB, WRs, TE, entire OL outside of center and Guard(incognito) on offense. Then on defense our corners are a huge question and DE or DT depending on what we do with Odrick. This is a massive offseason for this franchise.
There were comparisons made to Lesean McCoy but I don't see it. Reminds me of a faster Clinton Portis possibly having the same career as Portis without the injuries.
I see Miller as a guy who can produce well on 12-16 carries per game. Is like to see a bigger, Fred/Steven Jackson type who can spell Miller, punish people, work in the red zone, on 3rd downs, and grind out games late. Keep him fresh and he can be productive all year long. I worry about his health if he's seeing more than 250 touches.
I see a 1,000+ rusher. Definitely. Kid has tons of upside. He's Reggie Bush without the bad decision making. He's going to have a breakout season next year.
He should be a nice player, perhaps even our most productive one on offense. That said, we need a vet like Reg, only bigger. Steven jax makes perfect sense.
His smoothness, instincts and natural running ability has always reminded me of Edgerrin James. Mind you, I'm not saying he is Edgerrin James but he has some similar characteristics.
Kid got size & speed, not afraid to lower the shoulder and most importantly has real good vision. Also a good down hill runner, so great fit for Philbin offense. There a real good reason Philbin & Ireland going to let Reggie Bush walk. [the reason is Lamar Miller]
Steven Jax would be a nice complement depending on what he costs. IMO Miller can carry the full load like Portis did. I just want to have a pounder to complement him. Maybe Jonas Gray can fill that role?
Matt Waldman and Evan Silva have made that comp as well. They both seem to indicate that Lamar is probably somewhere between Edgerrin James and Clinton Portis.
I'd put Edge above Miller as I think he had better vision, but I think Portis is a good comp. They were almost identical in size. Portis had more long speed, but I see similar burst and vision. Miller might be a little more powerful. I think he runs with better pad level and drops his shoulder better.
If he is only slightly less explosive than Charles??? Then watch out, because we have a star on our hands. What Jamaal Charles does in KC while facing stacked boxes is IMO nothing short of amazing.
This is a pretty interesting thread. The names being brought up are some of the most prolific rushers of our time. Not much in the way of hesitance here, I'm noticing.
The funniest part of this article is how Omar managed to pump it out in like a span of 20 minutes after I gave him the link to this video. I gave it to him, 20 minutes later he makes an article about it and then tweets at me that I should create a Brian Hartline video for him too like I did last year.
Miller had three carries in that first half. Nice try making him a star with those kinda numbers. Here is my favorite part of that game for Miller. Bush does all the work and Miller gets labeled a great running back for coming off the bench with fresh legs. He has proven nothing at all. 1. Miami Dolphins at 10:24 2. 1-10-MIA 25(10:24) 22-R.Bush up the middle to MIA 29 for 4 yards (33-T.Branch). 3. 2-6-MIA 29(9:39) 22-R.Bush up the middle to MIA 44 for 15 yards (23-J.Hanson). 4. 1-10-MIA 44(9:06) 22-R.Bush up the middle to MIA 49 for 5 yards (52-P.Wheeler). 5. 2-5-MIA 49(8:13) 22-R.Bush up the middle to OAK 47 for 4 yards (33-T.Branch). OAK-56-M.Burris was injured during the play. His return is Probable. 6. 3-1-OAK 47(7:39) 17-R.Tannehill pass short right to 22-R.Bush to OAK 22 for 25 yards (24-M.Huff). 7. 1-10-OAK 22(7:01) 22-R.Bush up the middle to OAK 16 for 6 yards (52-P.Wheeler). 8. 2-4-OAK 16(5:57) 22-R.Bush left guard to OAK 15 for 1 yard (23-J.Hanson). 9. 3-3-OAK 15(5:14) 26-L.Miller left tackle for 15 yards, TOUCHDOWN.
He had 65 carries. Come on now let's be honest. I love Miller and I immediately saw resemblance to CJ Spiller (I'm no guru of course just naked fan eyes). I think Spiller is more dazzling but trust me, I know. When we played Buffalo I watched Bush run and then saw Spiller run and thought, jesus why does Spiller resemble a nifty shifty but powerful semi-truck while Bush looks like a souped up Honda Civic. Spiller runs with more power and with as much agility as Bush IMO. Can Miller be that? I hope so. I don't see as much agility but the similarities were there for me. At the same time, it's the NFL. He had 65 carries. He could flame out if given full time duties. Parcells was one smart guy. You gotta put away the anointing oil until he actually does it.
It's great to be a Florida Gator! I do think it's funny that the poster says the Cane homers are out and is immediately proven wrong. LOL
Being prolific depends on opportunities and the system as well as the talent. The comparisons I and many others made refers to his talent or skill set. Those aren't predictions about how productive Miller will be. I would say that in terms of production he would be similar what Bush was this last season, but without most of those plays where he lost yardage and hopefully more consistent carries since he presumably wouldn't be benched for large stretches like Bush was. If Miller proves to be reliable enough as a pass blocker, I expect he'll get the opportunities to be quite productive.
Right, that's what I'm saying. This thread has quite a lot of "Miller does X like Y" posts, where Y is an explicitly named upper tier rusher of the last 15 years. For so many to be making those statements makes the general tone of this thread very interesting to me. I'm commenting on that, nothing more. Though I'll say that I was pretty big on Miller going in to the 2011 college season and 2012 draft process. Thought he'd be picked by Green Bay no later than the 2nd round.
I loved the Lamar Miller pick. I could see him consistently racking up 1,100 to 1, 300 yards a season if he can stay healthy.
Philbin talks about Miller needing to be more consistent. http://landing.newsinc.com/shared/video.html?freewheel=91082&sitesection=dash&VID=24619244
